FMV is NOT dead....

It's still expensive compared to the alternatives, is what I meant. But yes, you are also right. It is cheaper than ever before.

I'm sure the right producer/director combo could come up with a really inexpensive FMV based game that would be aggressively priced even against the alternatives. FMV done well doesn't mean expensive either.

So basically it comes down to the choices of the producers and developers.
Well, yes, everything is possible. I'll admit that.

Silent Steel, I still have that game...
It wasn't so much a FMV as much an Interactive Movie... All you had to do in Silent Steel was make decisions, you didn't have worry about picking up inventory or figuring out puzzles and whatnot...
It was hard at first, because if you didn't let the XO in on the Report and go straight to the Torpedo Room, you would end up losing in the end... It was a good game, but I prefer a game that has multiple paths, just because you make one mistake doesn't mean you have to fail, you should be given the chance to correct the mistake from time to time...
I almost always ate Crab Seasoned Potato Chips when I played that game...

Imagine the extra money they'd make from hardcore fans by filming a few extra scenes and then releasing an interactive version (after the normal edition of course for those fans that can't wait) with a few alternative paths/endings and unlockable bonuses (outtakes) :D
That would be a cool. In fact, something like this was done with the very successful BBC TV series "Doctor Who". You can actually play an episode of the show. The game mechanic is rudimentary due to the fact that it was originally designed for some set top box available only in Britain with a remote much like a DVD remote. They since have converted it into a flash game on the net and it is like playing through an actual episode.

It certainly was a hit with me and my family (we are all fans of Doctor Who) to be able to play through an episode. If any of you are Doctor Who fans, you can play it here....
