The last film you´ve seen and your thoughts about it
That's a good way of putting it, Doc.
I find that if you see a film when it comes out and you love it, and it goes on to become renowned for being a masterpiece of sorts, you tend to feel like it is part of you, and are damn proud of its success. Kind of like being a key part of something from the beginning; you feel that the films success is also your own.
For me, I was not fortunate enough to be there to see it when it was fresh, and hence it had probably lost a lot for me by the time I saw it. But on the flip-side, when I first saw Battle Royale (Kinji Fukusaku) it totally blew me away because it had the same profound and shocking effect on me that Clockwork probably had for you. Nowadays, it's harder to find someone to latch onto it in the same way I did when it first came out. But I feel its my obligation to hold it dear (to much enjoyment every time I might add). I read some of the Manga for it before I saw the film, and read the novel it was based on after (both had significantly more impact), and the whole thing has become one of my personal gemstones of cinema.

Okay, I just gotta ask since you stepped on this path... How do you feel if you see a feel when it comes out and it turns out to be a Dumpster Ride???Cubase wrote: I find that if you see a film when it comes out and you love it, and it goes on to become renowned for being a masterpiece of sorts, you tend to feel like it is part of you, and are damn proud of its success. I am not familiar with Battle Royale. I looked for it on IMDB and found something called Batoru rowaiaru (English title: Battle Royale) by director Kinji Fukasaku released in 2000.
The plot synopsis is described as:
In future Japan, a group of delinquent students from a Japanese high school have been forced by legislation to compete in a new forum of reality television. The students are each given a bag with a randomly selected weapon and a few rations of food and water and sent off to kill each other in a no-holds-barred (with a few minor rules) game to the death.
At first, I thought this sounded a lot like Running Man. But I read some other comments indicating that "Each of the 42 pupils involved in this "game" are not volunteers and are forced to kill their best friends /girlfriends, etc., in order to survive this horror."
Wow! That puts a whole different spin on it. Heavy stuff.
Is this the film you're talking about? If so, I'll start looking for it.

Yes Doc, that's the one. It's one of those rare jewels that actually add something new to the whole moviemaking thing.
I'm sure Cub can put it into words better than I can.

Pirates, vampires, zombies, ninjas, ghouls, aliens, goblins, monsters, robots, sorcerers, undead, werewolves, demons, mutated dinosaur-cyborgs and those pesky phone salesmen! The shotgun is a one-size-fits-all solution!
Yes that's the one Doc. Batoru Rowaiaru is its Japanese name. In Katakana バトル・ロワイアル
...but the imdb synopsis is a bit incorrect. It has nothing to do with reality television or television in general. The whole 'Battle Royale' concept ( as it is called in the film) is a government initiative in Japan. Basically it is set in the not too distant future, and the nation has gone down the tube as a vast majority of teenagers are becoming delinquents and extremely rebellious against the nation. So as part of a new legislation, one class is picked from a lottery each year and all the students in that class are sent to an island (against their will) and must kill each other off within 3 days. If there is more than 1 standing after this period of time, everyone dies.
I find the film amazing because is presents a totally unique perspective on the human psyche, and how we value friendships, trust and romance, even in the most dire of situations. Some form alliances, some become paranoid soloists, and some partake in juvenile romances, and such approaches make for some really intense and interesting confrontations between the characters... and it has plenty of violence to pepper such encounters.
I think you might enjoy it Doc... but its probably going to be either you love it or hate it. You can see the trailer here: http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-T7yPJVvXw

I went to see The Strangers last night. There were only two new wide-release movies that opened Friday. The Strangers and Sex and the City.
At first, Jerry (my movie buddy) and I attempted to SITC, but all of the showings from 4:45 'till midnight were sold out. (Showings at 4:45, 5:45, 7:00, 8:00 9:00 10:15, 11:15 all sold out.) Can you believe it?
So we settled for The Strangers. Although they claim this is not a remake, it is the exact same story as the 2006 French movie ils (English title: Them.) Both movies claim to be based on or inspired by true events and, apparently, the screenplays were written independently and that is why they say it isn't a remake.
Anyway, The Strangers was pretty intense and scary, but I didn't enjoy it as much as my friend did. I thought the victims could easily have turned the tables on the bad guys but they were apparently too intimidated by the masks to put up a fight.
The victims had a shotgun while the bad guys only had primitive weapons. Just not believable that the victims could have screwed up so badly. That just put me off too much.

You know I usually only report on Big Screen movies, but last night, I watched one of my older favorites on DVD that I think all gamers here would really enjoy.
The movie is eXistenZ (1999) (pronounced EX-e-stenz) by David Cronenberg (who has a whole laundry list of unique, cult-like movies - amazing director.)
If any of you haven't seen this, it is a MUST SEE. I will try to explain.
The entire movie is, essentially, an FMV adventure game. I don't mean that it is like an adventure game or that it is based on an adventure game. It is an adventure game. It is your ultimate fantasy adventure game come to life. Instead of just first-person perspective and FMV, this is a multi-player game that you jack into (like jacking into the Matrix.) But unlike The Matrix, eXistenZ is a game, and the players know it's a game.
There are so many subtle features in it that come directly from adventure games. A quote from the movie: "You have to PLAY the game to find out Why you're playing the game."
and
"We're both stumbling around together in this unformed world, whose rules and objectives are largely unknown, seemingly indecipherable or even possibly nonexistent, always on the verge of being killed by forces that we don't understand."
The game-world is totally bizarre, built on some weird bio-electronic technology. And the cast is fantastic.
Jennifer Jason Leigh, Jude Law, Ian Holm and Willem Dafoe. Here's a trailer link:

Oh yeah. Existenz is a great film. One of these films I gotta buy on DVD somewhen, I can only support Dr.Pauls recommendation.
Last film I´ve seen: One flew over the cuckoos´ nest-
I have seen it a LOT of times throughout the years, and what can I say, definately one of my favorite movies of all times.

Watched the Lethal Weapon Series over the Weekend... Great Movies... It's a shame Gibson went crazy... lol
I just watched the Newest Installment of the Rambo series... They certainly took Rambo 4 to the next level on the Gruesome Scale... Bodies flying apart, heads coming off... 60 year old running through the Jungle like he was 30... That part made me think of Indiana Jones, hehehe...
It wasn't too bad for a 3rd world country war zone style movie though... Rambo the One Man Army to the rescue again... Nothing but a Bow and Arrow, a Homemade Knife this time, and a 50 Caliber Machine Gun mounted on the back of a truck... If you have those 3 things then I assure you {after watching this movie} that you can take down an entire Warlord and his army...
You Can Life For Nothing... Or You Can Die, For Something...

After watching my Red Wings lose in the 3rd OT last night, I was so dejected I couldn't sleep. So, I watched The Last of the Dogmen. A very goor modern day western with some interesting twists and turns. I highly recommend it. Starring Tom Berenger and Barbara Hershey with naration by Wilfred Brimley. Good movie.
"If you look to me for illumination, you better have a flashlight!"
Well, I didn't expect it to be all that much and it wasn't... Meet The Spartans... Quite stupid even for a Spoof Film... Unless you are a Huge Fan of the Spoof Stuff, don't waste your time with this...

I saw a film called The Fall last night. This is a limited release film and will probably only be available at theaters that show high-brow, artsy stuff.
Visually, it was a festival of colorful and surreal imagery. It was directed by Tarsem Singh (who also directed the very surreal and visually stunning 2000 film The Cell.) So the imagery might not surprise you.
The credits indicated that this film was a remake of a 1981 Bulgarian film called Yo Ho Ho. If you like absolutely breathtaking visuals, exotic scenery, fantastical costumes and a whole spectrum of characters, then you might enjoy it.
The only problem I had was that I don't hear very well, and one of the main characters, a ten year old Indian girl, constantly talked under her breath and there were only about three lines by her in the whole film that I could make out the words. My friend did better, but he said he only got about 75 percent. Will have to wait for the DVD with subtitles.
The official website for The Fall is here http://www.thefallthemovie.com/. Check out the trailer.

Bafitis: Regarding Meet the Spartans, I generally like spoof films, but I thought MTS was the worst movie I ever saw in my whole life. And I've seen a lot of them. A big strong Barf-Alert for that one.
