Pirates of the Caribbean 2 talk
I actually think the movie explained it the other way around. That the Scandinavian pronounciation would be with the a as in car. But being Norwegian I might have twisted the line in my head to make it fit, since I absolutely would pronounce it with the a as in car.Jerry Dan wrote:So, I understand that "kraken" is the definite article form of "krake". What I don't get is the line from the movie about pronouncing it with an "a" as in "æ", the vowel in English "cat". The way I heard the explanation was that this was to closer the Scandinavian pronounciation, as opposed to pronouncing the "a" as in "car". But in Icelandic or Norwegian, at least, the spelling should be kræken if that is the case, and I cannot find anyone spelling it that way. Am I mistaken? Am I right and the screenwriters mistaken? WHAT'S GOING ON?!!??!
But I also thought the two options offered in the movie was a as in car or a as in bacon. English speaking people would use the a as in bacon if they jut saw the word written, wouldn't they?
That said, what a great movie!
If you can't be good, be careful
I believe, you're right, Anne-Lise. Not that I remember at all if they did explain the "Kraken" bit in the movie, but I do know that they did say "Kraken" with the a as in 'car' and not as in 'bacon'. That would indeed be the Scandinavian way of pronouncing the word and you're right that English speaking people would pronounce it otherwise if they just saw the written word.
Anyway - I was very caught up with explaining so much about the Danish language that I forgot all about talking about the movie which was the essential bit of this thread. I myself saw it on the premiere day here in Denmark and I must say that I was thrilled about it. I absolutely loved it - maybe even more than the first one and that one was brilliant as well. I liked the fact that they included a bit more action in the second movie and also gave Orlando Bloom's and Keira Knightley's characters more depth, so we could get more into their skin so to speak. Wonderful humor as was the case with the 1st movie and Johnny Depp is absolutely priceless as Jack Sparrow. So hilarious to look it! Amazing and I can't wait to watch the 3rd movie

I'm quite sure they pronounced it consistently as the "a" in "cat". They justified it by appealing to its etymology, which struck me odd since my guess would be that the Scandinavian pronounciation would have the "a" as in "car".
Quite an enigma. But it was a rip-roaring fun movie!

Jim,
If you're a Malcom McDowell fan, you may find "if" quite interesting. It is Malcom McDowell's first movie role. ( He did TV before that. ) The movie is 'artsy' and takes place at an English boarding school. The plot, however, is a sort of metaphor for revolution.
Meanwhile, the 2nd of the Mick Travis series (O Lucky Man) was based on an original idea of Malcom McDowell's. I won't say what that idea is, because it would sort of spoil the story. That movie, however, also features a very young and (I must say,) quite sexy Helen Mirren in the female lead role. I'm guessing that you are also a fan of Helen Mirren.

I LOVE Helen Mirren!!! And, though she is not as young as she once was, I still find her both sexy and attractive. In fact, I really enjoyed the movie Calendar Girls. But, my favorite series with Mirren as the lead was the detective series called Tennyson (sp?). They were incredibly intense story lines and extremely well made.
I will check out the McDowell series you mentioned as well.

I'm a fan of Helen Mirren too. The series you're talking about is Prime suspect, where Helen Mirren is Jane Tennison. According to imdb.com Prime suspect 7 is due this year.

I just saw this film.
I enjoyed it alot. From the very start it really got into full-swing and the pace was pretty fast all the way through. Although after you've finished watching it you realise they didn't accomplish as much as you'd thought! But that's hardly important whe you're so caught up in how they accomplish those few things. There were some really inventive and funny scenes, like on the island, I was thinking this must be one of the most extravagent and funny escape attempts I've seen
Then later when they get to the chest and the whole wheel thing, that was unexpected and hilarious too.
Johnny Depp was fantastic, I'm a fan of his. Not to the point where I'll enjoy absolutely everything he does (depends on the film itself) but his acting is always impressive and this film was great so overally it was fun to watch.
I thought it was a little too unsatisfying having the ending so much of a "GO WATCH THE THIRD FILM" thing... it's a little too blatant and kind of feels like there should of been a conlusion somewhere... "Oh we better go get him BUT WAIT its not the next film yet... nevermind".

But hey it worked... I'll be there at the 3rd film *shakes fist*
But I probably would of done anyway based on their inventiveness before the conclusion
Anyway it was great

True. The first in a trilogy series has to introduce the characters and get the viewer interested in the story. The second usually ends with things looking bad for our hero. But the third is the finale where the hero fights back against tremendous odds and wins the day.If a film trilogy is planned, it's typical that the 2nd film has a "go see the third film" angle to it. Look at "Lord of the Rings" and "Star Wars." In my opinion, it's not just a marketing ploy. but a valid seque in the series.
The difference is, that "Lord of the Rings", "Star Wars" and "The Matrix" were planned like trilogies from the beginning - at least the stories are. (Sure, if the first movies of the second two series would have failed, their sequels would never have been made.)
"Pirates of the Caribean" was a single movie in the beginning. Only when it became succesful, they decided to make a sequel for it and in order to milk even more money out of the franchise they split the new story in two.
