The last film you´ve seen and your thoughts about it
Speaking of James Bond: This may be a complete outsider position and while my favorite bond is Sean Connery (followed by Daniel Craig) i´ve got to say that my favorite Bond movie of all time is on her Majestys Secret Service with George Lazenby. I feel like this one is refreshingly different from most other Bond movies and to some degree maybe even unusual (even though it´s got enough of the classic elements that you´d expect from a Bond movie). And man, when i´ve seen the film for the first time i was a rather small kid and i had a real crush on Diana Rigg so the ending of the film (after the marriage) drove me nuts.
Majesty is an oddity. Its plot rivals with Moonraker, the bobsled chase, well, speaks for itself, and the wedding topped the whole thing off. Throw in Lazenby and your WTF factor is to the roof.
And yet.
It's impossible to dismiss it, and it's impossible to describe it. I can't even compare it to the other titles, but it's unmistakably Bond.
It's all very perplexing.

I think that just sums it up perfectly, it is impossible to describe it and it is Bond while being very different at the same time.
I guess one thing (despite other factors) i liked about it, was the circumstance that Bond felt a lot more comprehensible here, which was something new for this rather "cartoonish" character. That was also something i really liked about Casino Royale, that made me think about "On her Majestys Secret Service" a couple of times while watching it ( at least in the 2.nd half of Casino Royale).

I actually thought Lazenby was a decent Bond. It's the ruffled tuxedo shirt that spoiled the image. And forget the bobsled; James Bond participates in curling in the very same movie.

I think you hit the target well with your synopsis of Majesty's S. S., Frank. As far as Lazenby is concerned, perhaps a better plot and better direction would have helped. Still, I agree he had the moxie that some actors lack when playing Bond. He may have been a great one with a little more time and effort.

Just saw the Knowing...
Great effects, great action and the film has a whole was very entertaining.
But the premise of the story: I hated it towards the end.
Shot in Melbourne though... I recognised quite a bit. Proyas is a great director (one of my favorite Aussie directors, especially after Dark City), but I think this story as a whole let the film down. I mean, sure the note lead to some great sequences, but if the ending was inevitable doesn't it totally invalidate the relevance of anything beforehand? I think the premise was way to big to follow the events of the film.

Biggest problem with it, for a certainty. It's an issue with catastrophe movies that try to outdo what's been done before. Same problem with movies solely based on a twist. The premise is amplified with each scene, until it fall flats when the end cannot possibly deliver the stakes promised earlier.I think the premise was way too big to follow the events of the film.
I was genuinely surprised by Knowing, regardless, and 3/4 of the film had the very eerie Dark City feel to it. It's just too bad the last bit was entirely different from the rest of the film. Same disappointment I got from I Am Legend. It became an entirely different movie towards the end, when two extra characters came out of nowhere to justify a terrible ending.
I don't know what their creative process is like, but something tells me they don't write their endings beforehand.

Dark City? As in Kiefer Sutherland, Jennifer Connelly Dark City? That movie is a directorial MESS the first three quarters of the film, then suddenly it gets on track and becomes a decent film.
But the beginning is horrible! It's... too jumbled, from a storytelling point of view. Just awful.
The above is to be regarded as my opinion, of course.
That's my two bits deposited, anyway.

Pirates, vampires, zombies, ninjas, ghouls, aliens, goblins, monsters, robots, sorcerers, undead, werewolves, demons, mutated dinosaur-cyborgs and those pesky phone salesmen! The shotgun is a one-size-fits-all solution!
Figured I would do this in another post.
So I saw The Haunting In Connecticut yesterday.
It was an okay movie. Not one I am going to run out and buy, but it was nonetheless entertaining.
Had a few jumpy parts, and would have been much better if the stupid 14 year olds in the theater would have shut up.
I enjoyed seeing Casey Jones in the movie. hehe. Sorry... was a huge Ninja Turtles fan as a kid.
Anyway, I would say that it is a movie that could merit a rental unless you can find a cheaper theater to go to. The one I went to was $10.95 Canadian a ticket. Not worth that much.
Cheap theater closed near my place... used to show movies a couples months after release for $3.00. Would have preferred seeing it there.

So, one more post about new movies I have seen previewed that look good.
So, Terminator 4 Salvation. Definitely looking forward to this one. I know it will not be as good as the second one but it has to be better than the 3rd.
I am going to give McG a chance. I just hope he doesn't screw it up. So far, the trailers look really good, but I am not getting my hopes too high or I know I may be disappointed. Christian Bale should be pretty good as John Connor.
Heard too that Robert Patrick may come back for the next sequel as a scientist working on cell regeneration for the cure of diseases. Somehow SkyNet is going to get a hold of him and his technology to create T-1000. That should be cool.

WOW!!!!!
Next Movie.
Where the Wild Things Are.
This was the biggest surprise I had seen. I remember this book from my child as probably many people do. I was skeptical when I first heard it was being made because I thought, how is a book that is only 10 sentences long going to be translated into a movie. Then I saw the trailer. Yes, probably a lot of filler will be made up to constitute Max's adventures with the Wild Things but I also heard that Maurice Sendak is working closely with film makers on the movie, so the themes of anger will still translate through out the movie.
The trailer is amazing. And the Wild things are the most impressive. They actually used puppets made by the Jim Henson company and motion captured and cgi'd the faces. They are really well done.
So here is the trailer for this one

Again. WOW!!
Last movie is the new star trek.
I was pretty skeptical about this one when I first saw it too. But the new trailers are making it look a lot better. People also that have seen screeners are saying good things too.
I'll probably go see this one. Hoping it does not lose the science fiction aspects of Star Trek and is turned into a glorified action movie in space. If this happens I imagine it would be entertaining, but would not feel like Star Trek. Eric Bana should do a good job in this movie as Nero. Really liked him in the Hulk. I am worried about the guy playing Captain Kirk though. He definitely is doing his own take on the character. Doesn't feel like Shatner. The other characters seem spot on though. We'll have to see with this one.

WOW!!! again. Trailer looks great, but I am still a little reserved on this one.
K, I'm done with my novel now.

I'm not saying he botched the story. Story's excellent. I'm saying he messed up the way it was told. The directing and editing for the first three quarters of the film was crap. Then it's like the movie settles down, gets a feel for itself, paces itself and becomes good.
But the first bit is just... a jumbled mess, no real coherence, not a good way to tell a story at all. I don't know if he wanted to convey a sense of surrealism or whatever, but all he does is screw with the film's overall feel.
Again. My opinion and should be treated as such.

I could not disagree more there Fred... with pretty much everything you have said. In fact, it's all the polar opposite.Fred Buer wrote:I'm not saying he botched the story. Story's excellent. I know you are entitled to your opinion, and so I will not actually get into a debate. Suffice to say it is one of the films I very much look up to in terms of overall uniqueness, directorial brilliance and approach in conveying the story.
