The last film you´ve seen and your thoughts about it

When it comes to watching Clint Eastwood walking from one side of the frame to the other, taking an hour to do so, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly takes the cake. It's a great film, but come on! Pick up the pace! Do we really need to see these guys walking along sun baked desert sands so long? It's already like four hours long!

*disclaimer* The Good, the Bad and the Ugly was an awesome film, even if the writer didn't realize that pheonix wasn't a hundred miles or so west of Chicago. And none of the American actors corrected him.

It doesn't need more pace. It's paced out just right. They don't make films like this anymore, with a sense of real, true suspense. Not to mention the excellent score by Morricone, and Leone's style of directing.

The end alone, with the camera showing the characters, then their hands near their guns, then their faces, then their hands, inching towards that gun, ever slowly, then their eyes, the music culminates in a climax and THEN!

The gunshot rings out like a cannonblast!

I would love to see this film at the cinema. Just so I could stare down the barrel of a gun the size of the Lincoln Tunnel. And hear the music blared loud, and the gunshots louder.

And Tuco. Never forget Tuco.

Also, what other western is as quotable?

Pirates, vampires, zombies, ninjas, ghouls, aliens, goblins, monsters, robots, sorcerers, undead, werewolves, demons, mutated dinosaur-cyborgs and those pesky phone salesmen! The shotgun is a one-size-fits-all solution!
I watched that Nicholas Cage film "Next" on stars a couple of days ago... Seeing previews and stuff it didn't look like it was gonna be that good... But it wasn't too bad... It was different that's for sure... Seeing 2 minutes into your future about any scenario that your life could take... That could be a talent worth having...

Based on a book by Philip K. Dick. His stories are golden ;)

That maybe so, but not all movies based on books come out well... I haven't read Next myself, but the movie was good... Normally if a Movie is good, you can bet that the book is going to be even better...

Small wordplay on my part. I believe the book the movie was based on was named 'The Golden Man'.

As titles go, the coolest ones are usually to be found in the Sci-Fi department. I mean, c'mon?

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? We Can Remember It For You Wholesale? A Stranger In A Strange Land? Starship Troopers? This Day All Gods Die?

They all sound so COOL...

Many of Philip K Dick's stories have been made into movies, usually with a different title. Here's a list (in chronological order):

Blade Runner - Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (novel)
Total Recall - We CAn Remember it for You Wholesale (short story)
Screamers - Second Variety (short story)
Impostor - The Impostor (short story)
Minority Report - Minority Report (short story)
Paycheck - Paycheck (short story)
A Scanner Darkly - A Scanner Darkly (novel)
Next - The Golden Man (short story)
Radio Free Albemuth (in production) - Radio Free Albemuth (novel)

I've read all of them and seen all of them except Radio Free Albemuth. I have to say that any movie based on a PKD story is well worth seeing and the book/short story well worth reading.
First, it was Tuco (Eli Eallach) that really played the most critical role in Good, Bad, Ugly. What an incredible acting performance! Also, I saw this movie at a drive-in (remember those) when it first came out and it was the main subject of conversation over beer for months.

Second, NEXT was a super movie. I really enjoyed the whole idea and the way it played out.

Third, most of the movies Dr. Paul listed I've seen and they were awesome! Now I will have to go out and buy the books.
"If you look to me for illumination, you better have a flashlight!"
I truly envy you that experience Jim. Really.

"Whoever doublecrosses me and leaves me alive, he knows nothing about Tuco, heheh... Nothing..."

Some of those were made into games as well...

Some people have the knack to turn paper into film while others don't... Stephen King, Tom Clancy, J.K. Rowling, just to name a couple...

The way you word that it sounds like you're saying Stephen King, Tom Clancy and J.K. Rowling don't make very good movies based off of books, while only Stephen King has tried his hand at screenwriting.

Or I can assume you mean the movies based on stories written by these authors are no good, and so I provide a list of movies based on stories these authors wrote that turned out to kick ass.

The Hunt For Red October
Clear and Present Danger
Patriot Games
Sum of All Fears
The Shining (Kuberick version)
Misery
Secret Window
1408
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

I haven't seen part five yet, but it looked good.

Yeah I see what you are saying, my bad, but I was implying that those were the few who HAVE the Knack to turn most of their books into film... Most of their books turn out to be good movies as well... Not saying that they write the movies, but the movies that are based off their books usually turn out well...

Speaking of Stephen King and books to movies, has anyone seen his newest "The Mist"??? It looks really good, I just haven't gotten out to see it...

As you might expect, yeah. I've seen it.

To a certain extent it is pretty much what you would expect. But there is an added dimension to it that makes it a little more unique. Won't say more for risk of spoiling.

--------

On another note, I saw The Superhero Movie last night. Basically a parody of Spiderman, with a little Batman, Superman, X-Men and Fantastic 4 thrown in. Absolutely hilarious. I couldn't breath sometimes I was laughing so much.

The parody of Spiderman was amazingly well-done. And then there was Pamela Anderson!
I highly recommend seeing The Mist. It was an excellent movie. Thomas Jane (I think that's his name, played the role of Punisher in the newest version) was at the top of his game in this movie. Yes, the movie does add a very twisted dimension to it and if you haven't seen it, go rent it and enjoy. Great Movie.

Ahhh, yes, finally...someone said "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly"...Totally revolutionized the way a western is done. Clint Eastwood is just...I don't know...his performances just give you chills sometimes. Lee Van Clief made for a pretty good villain and the character of Tuco was great....do you trust him? can you trust him? Excellent movie, and Fred, I totally get what you are saying about the final scene. The build up..the anticipation...the climax. Outstanding work...that scene is crazy. Camera work was brilliant, musical score was perfect, acting was top-notch.

With that being said, and staying with the western topic...how do you guys feel about The Unforgiven? Another Clint Eastwood masterpiece and in my opinion (which contradicts Fred's opinion) this is the greatest Western of all time. The story of a man beaten down by his past and holding on to the memory of his late wife who helped try and erase his past...but finally realizing, that wicked part of his soul that he hoped had died, still had somewhat of a grip on him. Excellent acting in this movie and a Hall of Fame cast...Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman, Gene Hackman, Richard Harris....I can quote that movie all day long....I just love it.

Little Bill - "Well you sir are a coward...you just shot an unarmed man.."
William Munny - "Well he shoulda armed himself, if he's gonna decorate his saloon with my friend.."
Little Bill - "My guess is you be William Munny outta Missouri, killing women and children?"
William Munny - "That's right. I've killed women and children...killed just about everything that walks or crawls at one time or another...and I'm here to kill you Little Bill, for what you did to Ned.."

Awesome.
"Some men aren’t looking for anything logical. They can’t be bought, bullied, reasoned or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.”
I don't think it has made it out on DVD yet, has it??? I do intend on seeing it though... I really meant to get out to the Theater to see it, just work got too hectic...

In his early years, there weren't very many Films of Clint Eastwood's that weren't good... He didn't start getting so-so until he passed 55 years of age...
Still can't beat the Dirty Harry Series... Those were some great movies...

"I Know What You're Thinking, Did I Fire 6 Times or only 5???" "You Have To Ask Yourself, Do I Feel Lucky?" "Well Do Ya Punk?"

Doesn't quite sound the same typed... lol
