When you go to C:\Program Files\DOSBox-0.72 and open the dosbox.conf with notepad what does it say under [autoexec]?

Not a problem nondaj, once we have the dosbox.conf right. I'm going to have you edit one more file.

EDIT - Just trying to do one thing at a time.

[autoexec]
# Lines in this section will be run at startup.
mount E E:\ -t cdrom -usecd 0 -ioctl
mount F F:\ -t cdrom -usecd 0 -ioctl
mount C C:\
mount D D:\
C:

Per your request for info from my config file in DosBox folder on Drive C.

Also here is some more info that might be of help re my PC: per request of Bafitis (Sp?)

DELL STATISTICS

Computer Specs:
Dell XPS400 Dimension
XP-Pro Version 2002 SP2
Pentium ® D CPU 2.80 GHz
2.79 GHz, 2.00 GB of Ram

E Drive – Sony CD-RW CRX217 E
IDE\CD Rom Sony
F Drive – HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW
GWA4164B
Video Card – Nvidia GeForce 6800
Sound Card – Sigma Tel High Defin.
Audio CODEC

AV is ESET NOD32
Printer/scanner is HP all in one

other protection programs:
AFT Cleaner
Advanced Windows care
Spybot Search and Destroy
Windows Defender
Windows Malicious Tool Remover
MalWareBytes anti-malware

Many of these were recommended by a tech on GeeksToGo when I was having an email problem. They did a Hi-Jack program and several deep scans but all came up with nothing. It was decided my email problem was due to people who forward emails without care/caution and who do not monitor their address books.

I regulary keep Windows updated as well as the foregoing protection programs. And at end of day I usually do scans to clean temp files, recycle bin and etc. And do disc scan and defrag ever so often.

Have Winrar and Winzip, Nero, Adobe 8 and Windows Media player. Giving you all of this because Bafitis (sp?) asked for same thinking maybe some configuration/programs might be causing problems.

I know I have never gotten used to my CDRom drives both being burning drives and learning how to handle both with CD-RW/CD-W being able to go in both drives but DVD-RW/DVD-W not being able to be in both drives. This plus the - and + values on the discs just compound the confusion for me - I am getting too old for all of this! :evil: :lol:

Hope all of this info is of some help and not just so much fluff in this game problem.

Hey SanGUI, another thought - has summer hit you yet? We have been pushing three digit temps here in CA desert but suddenly it turned cold overnight and now furnace is back in use! All this to say what temp in the room should it be to not affect one's computer. Got into an argument with a pseudo tech here who claims 69-72 is what is needed and higher will affect your PC. Forget that with my arthritis so my room is at 80 - is this bad for my PC- affects the problem I am having with the drives seemingly? Clutching at straws here now:)

*sigh*

Still not running yet, huh???

Sounds like a Standard computer, I see no reason why the standard updated files from Nilo's Site aren't working for you...

Ok, now open the config.ini in the C:\Pandora folder with notepad.

Make the following changes to the section [CD_MAP]

Code: Select all

[CD_MAP]
Disk1=E
Disk2=E
Disk3=E
Disk4=E
Disk5=E
Disk6=E
Save and Exit, then try to start the game again.

We're starting to hit triple digit, but it hasn't been too bad yet. I did get a sunburn on my neck, face and forehead already though. :oops:

As far as temps...It depends upon what is in your computer and how well it's ventilated. The room with all my computer equipment is kept around 76 degrees. For computer labs (20+ computers) I suggest room temps between 70-75 degrees. For server rooms, my clients keep the room temps to a controlled 68-70 degrees.

Also very important if you live in a desert like area to use canned air to clean out your computer at least once a year, the dust will act as an insulator.

Just bought air duster stuff today so will do some blowing out. And have made changes you suggested so off to see if the game will work.

Spybot Search and Destroy
Windows Defender
Windows Malicious Tool Remover
Hi-Jack This
WinRAR
WinZip
Nero
Adobe 8
Windows Media Player 9, 10, 11[/list]

I am unable to speak for any of these

AFT Cleaner
Advanced Windows care
MalWareBytes anti-malware

Well, think we are home free but not in the game. Made changes you listed and at last the disc swap screen comes up with drive E !

BUT keeps saying insert disc into Drive E. So went to My Computer and looked at the drives - sure enough Drive E is NOT showing a disc is in it! So dug out my Overseer disc and sure enough it loaded right up plus the fact in My Computer it shows there is a disc in the Drive E.

Am completely dumbfounded now! Why this Drive E shows some discs and not others is beyond me. Hate to spend cost of getting a tech in as they are costly here (near $100) to come to your house.

So will go online to tech site and see what they can tell me. But at least I think we got the game installed in DosBox correctly at long last. Needless to say can't thank you enough for all the help you and Bafitis have been plus your patience wrestling with me and my PC ignorance at times.

Not sure I can keep my PC room at that low temp. I would freeze up and not be able to move with this darn arthritis:( So hope my PC makes it at a higher temp.

The other programs I have you were not able to speak to were recommended by a tech at GeeksToGo as favored ones to help keep Malware at bay.

You should be able to keep the room at about 80 or so and not have to worry about the computer, just so long as your Fans inside the computer are working and maybe stick a desk fan behind your computer if you're able to...

Those programs shouldn't cause any interference... It is weird about your CDROM showing some Discs and not others... Computers nowadays should show any disc when it's loaded, whether the computer can run it or load it or not, it should still show that it's there nonetheless...
I don't trust most Malware, Spyware, or Adware programs, unless they are a well known company... Lavasoft is a good company, hasn't let me down or caused any problems yet and I've been using them for years now...

Nondaj, you're starting to give me headaches just seeing that you've posted a new message... lmao

I'm just messing with you, we're here to help when we can... We just have to keep thinking of new things to try...
We'll get you up and running, just have some more patients...

Good idea re fan behind PC will search for same.

Re my CDRom problem - not sure if it correct to pursue here because it is not a Tex game problem. Waiting for reply from SanGUI also about the matter.

It is so confusing to have this CDRom recognize some discs and not others. Now Overseer sure is the same kind of game except it is not in dos is it? Might that be an answer? However the silly CDRom has done this before on other discs not centering around Dos so maybe that idea is down the drain.

Will be interesting to see if UAKM will run. Migh dig it out now and give it a whirl following Nilo's suggestions on his site. Should give this PD a rest though - am about buggy trying to keep everything straight re installation etc.:) :?

Glad to hear you able to play now. If that didn't work I was going to have change the dosbox.conf file to exclude the E: drive altogether. Then I was going to have you change the config.ini file to map the F: drive.

This is because earlier in this thread I inferred you may have a faulty E: drive from what you had posted...
nondaj wrote:So was ready to enjoy the game when have hit another snag:( Not sure if it is in the game however but in my two drives - Drive E and Drive F. I have had trouble with both ever since I bought my Dell a year ago, in getting Drive E to recognize a disc that is in it.
Am completely dumbfounded now! Why this Drive E shows some discs and not others is beyond me. Hate to spend cost of getting a tech in as they are costly here (near $100) to come to your house.
That's understandable, especially considering the actual techs that are dispatched generally make less than $20 per hour.

The other programs I have you were not able to speak to were recommended by a tech at GeeksToGo as favored ones to help keep Malware at bay.
The programs are probably very useful. I've just not had any need for or experience with them yet.

Are you refering to my room temp? I actually have a server cabinet in my room. It's ultimately a comfort level you will have to decide vs the potential of heat related issues.

Absolutely

Your computer whether playing Pandora in DOSBox or Overseer normally require Windows to be able to use the CD Drive. There is no difference. If you have problems in Windows with some discs, you will have problems in DOSBox with some discs.

It could be a failing/faulty CD drive, bad cable, bad power. It's cheaper to replace the drive for $35 than to have someone diagnose it for $50+. If you replace the drive also replace the data cable.

Edit - The $35 is an approx. cost based on you buying the drive and installing it yourself.

Will be trying UKAM and see how that goes. Just noted that the Pandora disc has a scratch on it - maybe the issue? If so might you know where I could buy Pandora game since it is so old not sure any are around anymore.

Will consider buying a new CDRom drive and if would you recommend another burning drive or just a plain CD drive.?

Not sure I understand your saying you are glad I got the game Pandora going? I got the swapt disc drive to say put disk in E drive but PC will not recognize the E drive so cannot as yet play Pandora. Am still going to give UKAM a whirl soon.
