Sunshine
Just saw the british science fiction film Sunshine. It's not due out in the States for quite some time I believe, but if you're a sci-fi buff, it's well worth the watch. One of the better science fiction movies I have seen in way, way too long a time.

Pirates, vampires, zombies, ninjas, ghouls, aliens, goblins, monsters, robots, sorcerers, undead, werewolves, demons, mutated dinosaur-cyborgs and those pesky phone salesmen! The shotgun is a one-size-fits-all solution!
It's not a disaster movie, thankfully. I don't endorse disaster movies anyway
They're too much like romantic comedies, with a minor twist.
Allow me to show you the basic formula for the romantic comedy:
Scene - College-environment
1: Boy meets girl.
2: Boy and girl falls in love.
3: Boy does something stupid and girl does not like boy anymore.
4: Boy makes everything right and everyone live happily ever after.
Now for the disaster movie:
Scene- - Huge disaster in progress
1: Boy meets girl.
2: Boy and girl falls in love.
3: Boy does something stupid and girl does not like boy anymore.
4: Boy makes everything right and everyone live happily ever after.
Which is why I prefer sci-fi movies. It's open-ended, you can do whatever you want with the medium, and you can *never* guess what's gonna happen. You make your own formula.
Which is also why I'm writing my first space opera these days
