Mayan Adventure

Hola,
I know as Tex Murphy fans, we all have to be somewhat interested in Mayan temples and the jungles of the Yucatan, so I figured I would tell you about my recent recent Mayan Adventure.

Last week, my nephew got married and decided to have his wedding down in the Riviera Maya (which is about 30 miles south of Cancun and very close to Cozumel. While I was down there, I took a side trip to Coba to explore the Mayan ruins that were nearby.

I didn't take a camera with me, so I have to wait for my companions to send me their pics to post. But what a cool trip!

The Coba ruins are still mostly overgrown with jungle and are not restored. Geological digs are still going on in the area.

We hiked through about 3 miles of jungle to reach the highest pyramid in the Yucatan (120 steps, 42 meters), explored some of the chambers and climbed around several other Mayan structures. Then we hacked through more jungle and did a zip-line across a small lake. In case you are unfamiliar with the term, zip lines are cables that are strung across a large expanse and you hang from the cable to zip across to the other side. In this case, our zip line was about 300 yards/meters and about 50 feet high. After that, we hiked through more jungle, and then rapelled down about 50 ft into an underground river which was in a large cave system. Later, we paddled canoes to the local Monkey Island where we threw coconuts at the monkeys. (Just kidding about the coconuts). Mostly, we gave them bananas.

Sorry I don't have any pics yet, so until then, here a couple links to some Coba sites:

Woah, that really does sound like quite a stunning adventure. Congrats for surviving it! Must of seen some amazing sights after putting in that effort to get to such remote places. I look forward to seeing photos.
The Mayan ruins in Tex Murphy were always kinda creepy to me with those winding tunnels and numerous chambers. I would wonder if something is going to jump out at me around the next corner.

I gotta admit, there were times when I didn't think I was going to make it. I was so tired and drenched with sweat when we finally got to the big temple, I barely made the climb up the steps. About half-way, I had to start crawling up the steps on all fours! Took me about 15 minutes to catch my breath when I finally got to the top.

Later, when we had to climb up from the underground river, I had to climb about 50 feet on a rope ladder. About 3/4 of the way up, I had strong doubts that I could make the rest of the way. In our group of 10, I was one of only four that made the climb. The others were hoisted out.

It was a very challanging expedition but a ton of fun.
Good for you, Doc. I would like to visit those ruins as well....some day.
