Dell the saga
Sorry this is not realy tex ralated in any case.
OK let me sketch my problem
OK i got a dell optiplex gx620 begining of this year i bought 1024 of merore extra for it.
the system has not 1536 mb of ram but when it boots cold in the morning it just boots windows and then resets one or two time afther that no problems of any kind but every morning when i boot up the system it does reset once or twice.
Called dell called retailer their advice test memory by runing one kind for a few days
well i did week on 512 No reboot at all week with 1024 no crash too.
all memory back in the pc and yep it POOF reboots
OK OK OK i forgot to mention that when it just reboots i sometimes get windows telling me i recovered from a terible crash and my merory need to be cheked out.
OK i did that testes ram for 1200+ procent u know just left memory test runing all night.
OK all thats done back to calling helpdesk dell and retailer.
Well it could be the memory banks on mainbord so i get a new mainbord.
That was yesterday Old bourd out new one in OHOH its a DOA (dead on arival) sort of the mainbord works but the chip for fan speed seems to be unther the inpresion i live on the sun since my fann is running ready for takeoff.
GRRR OK so back to dell and retailer and yep today mainbord nr 3
DOA bourd out, dell mainbord nr 3 in, we left it in to see if system would crash with 1.5 gig of ram and yes it does.
Now the crap hits the fann
windows boots and says new hardware found bla bla bla USB intel bla bla bus well i got the same thing with the other mainbord yesterday so i just think hiting enter and let windows xp sort it out, but unlike yesterday i dont have mouse and keybourd working in windows no more in bios no problem same as in dos or winxp install cd but booting winxp in any form shape no mouse and keybourd
I must add mouse keybourd are usb and yesterdays changing of mainbord worked but today i cant do jack.
Now i hope someone here knows how to fix it becouse all the peaple at dell and my retailer can think of is reinstaling windows xp .
i have alot of special software for visualy chalenged peaple on that system and it will take me a week to just reinstall those alone.
so help anyone
if it where dos just bootdisk with sys.com and i would be flying.
but alas windows xp the driver loaded for usb is the problem if there where a way to remove it and force winxp to use default one booting a previously working setting doesnt work also
i forgot to add the dell has no more ps2 mouse and keybourd conectors only usb

POSSIBLE SOLUTION = Build your own PC.. then nothing can go wrong.
Okay now without joking around. I think you've got a hardware fault and I think its your memory. Dell computers are a pain in the arse frankly, I hate working on them. There is also a potential that it could be your PSU too but I can't be certain of that.
My advice for the WindowsXP thing. 1. Install your Motherboard drivers and see if that works as that will usually fix any USB issues 2. If that fails do a standard install over the top of your existing XP (that is don't format you computer, just install XP over the top of XP) this way your files will be intact, your programs will run fine and your XP should hopefully be fixed (note this can take ages so make sure you've got plenty to do while you wait.. and make sure you don't need your PC anytime soon) You may need to re-install a few drivers should things be a bit weird (rarely have I had to do that but it has been known to screw up a few of the windows updates so you never really know)
The windows XP installer is actually meant to work as a repair program when you overwrite it over the top of an existing XP because it restores XP to its original .dlls and system files.
You shouldn't need to format at all.
If you are too worried about this then I'd suggest get dell to take a long hard look at the system to try and get it going (as in send the PC back for servicing).
I don't know if this helps or not.

The epic horror story continues.
OK they have replaced the mainbord 2 times now.
Ohh "mr_cyberpunk" and "DrPaul" we first tryed repair install well system crashed. then clean install with quick format system crached. lastly full format with reinstall seemed to work untill i started to download and install the Dell drivers and tools that is.
OK so i am geting a new hard drive new memory (wierd enuf they only bring one new 256 mb module even thought u have a dual channel system becouse they think its not posible both memory sticks in my pc are broken) ohh and a new powersuply. LOL i was joking to the Dell tech support this afthernoon isnt it faster if u just send me a replacement pc, Well they dont think so but i am geting almost all items replaced.
in any case tomorow they techy will be back and reinstall my entire system including all programs and testing.
keep fingers crossed.

Sadly it did not they reinstaled entire system with one 256 mb module new hard drive and all updates.mr_cyberpunk wrote:hope it works out for you.
i instaled works and word powerdvd from dell and all worked fine that day OK the tech supp dude said OK lets just replace the second memory module too and ill bring that in tomorow morning.
well that was this morning and 5 minetes afther its instaled and windows is booted POOF bleu screan of death.
Ohh well now i got to wait and see what dell does next im gone get a call back afther they talked to ofice head or something.
To be honest im tired of geting new parts reinstall almost daily now i would rather have a brand new sysstem that way i am sure it will work.
i got call that i had to test system with 2 memory stick and yep it crashed so when the man from Dell calls in the morning i am sure to push for a new systems there is something wrong and replacing all parts just didnt seem to work at all
days later and Nope not geting a new system they think that one memory module to replace 4 is a smart move to test first HAHAHAHA
