Predicting the Future! Today!

Let me tell ya, predicting the future is a lot harder than predicting the past. That stuff is easy in comparison! So here is my prediction as to what the new Tex game will look like. Notice, I'm not saying if. There will be a new Tex game. I have spoken with the Gods via e-mail, and they have given their thumbs up!

1. Believe it or not, the platform that will feature Tex's return is the X-Box 360! The company that damned Tex to hide away in this safe haven of the internet shall play host to his revival. Let's look at the evidence as to why.

A. Graphics wise, it is, in technical terms, the bomb. Here are some links to images of the current next generation line up.

http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/action/ ... tml?page=1

Anybody worried about what Tex would look like in CG should just take a look at these images, and hopefully almost all doubts will be swayed. I know ahead of time not to try convincing Alex against FMV, but I'm sure if it's a new Tex game that's published, he'll buy it too.

B. In regards to the capabilities of the system, the physical aspects have all been taken care of. Issues in regards to collision detail are a thing of the past. Older games like the original Medal of Honor and even the majority of it's sequels have been constrained to linear paths with plenty of loading, but supposedly, now that has come to an end.

And this is where Tex comes in. The only thing restraining Tex from wandering about the alleyways is money. (This subject covered later in post)

2. The game will feature the voices and likeness of all returning actors, as well as some new ones.

3. The game will be played in first person.

4. There will be multiple ways to acheive an objective. Such as, say Tex needs to enter a room. He could try to track down the key. Or he could pick the lock. Or he could sneak in through the fire escape. Or he could knock. Choices!

5. Money...seems important. I'll get back to it.

6. The inventory system is back, but a whole lot bigger. As the game will have a more open feel to it, and as there may be more items to aquire, specific items marked as modifiable will be available to combine and make more useable trinkets. An electric screwdriver is useless without it's various tips.

7. There will be one large main city, but that doesn't mean Tex can't travel to other locations as he finds out about them.

8. And then there's the big issue. Money. Funding has to come from somewhere, believe it or not. This is the main reason why FMV won't work. Nobody would pay for it. So, we have to think, who would actually pay for a new Tex game?

Off the bat, say no to Electronic Arts. To big of a company, and their games are more on the marketable sale than anything else.

Perhaps Ubi Soft would fund it? As they are notorious for the production of the Myst series, the idea of them publishing a budgeted adventure game isn't too out of the question.

Well, at the very least, that's something on the table in regards to money that wasn't there before. I'll let that subject settle for now.

9. Online features. Every game has to have online features these days, and Tex is no exception. So what do Tex fans do online? Race each other, of course! I think the idea of plowing full throttle down the busy streets of San Fransisco in a speeder, hurtling down narrow alleyways against your friends sounds like fun. Sue me! No really! Take my five pennies!

As it turns out, my meager salary as a bottom dwelling scum sucker at Blockbuster Video minus bills barely draws forth a hundred dollars, let alone five hundred. Let's not mention the fact that we're talking about making a fund of ten million dollars? That's a lot of money.

According to the numbers there are 113 registered users.

Each user donates five hundred a month. In one year that is 678,000. In order to reach a goal of 10,000,000 dollars, it would nessecitate us to wait...fifteen years. Realistically, impossible. Unrealisticaly, impossible. By that time we'll be needing 20 million.

Ahh! But there's the rub! Have all of the people from the old message board come over to the new one? I'm sure if they're willing to put forth five hundred a month, the least they'd do is come over to the new board. Unfortunately, we can only look after current registered users. I'd imagine a significant amount of the old users rarely posted. I know I didn't post much back on the old board, under the label of foxhunt1982.

A grass roots campaign for a video game? I'm not going to go right out and say it won't work. That message is hidden within the post. I'm just going to say...when such a campaign works for John Kerry, well...to put it bluntly, the political world is a lot more important than video games, especially ones not many people have heard of. I have not once encountered someone with the name of Tex Murphy and they not say, Who?

Alright, I'll be blunt. If you want to travel down that road, it'll be very, very difficult to get people's money from their kauffers for Tex Murphy. It would be easier to pitch the game to Electronic Arts.

The Gods also tell me that the information regarding my plans to acquire an X-Box 360 and not a faster computer or any of the other consoles did not go into their decision!

Deal! The more people posting on the forum, the better!

Although, it may be difficult to round these people up. I'd imagine the numbers on the old site were drastically increased due to the radio theatre petition...people who registered only to sign the petition. Maybe a lot of those people don't exist anymore.

Besides, there's not much for James to do aside from what is already done, being the final post on the old site, proclaiming the existance of the new site.

Some great points Vracar. I just have one counterpoint (and no, it's not that i don't want to spend money on a xbox 360... though for Tex, i would).

I don't believe the game needs any kind of online play. You hear it a lot today. Games that are mainly a single player experience that throw in online play have the play blasted for being added as an afterthought or gimmick most times. These days it seems that online only games have really stretched out from single player games with online or multiplayer capabilities.

I mean, let's look at it from our point of view. A new Tex adventure... with a multiplayer speeder racer game. Might give it a bash, might even be fun. We're gonna be interested in the adventure. A person who thinks racing speeders is cool probably isn't going to buy an adventure game just because it has a side game that ables them to do so. There are many games out there dedicated to racing strange craft at high speeds. They'll spend their money on those.

I admit though that my counterpoint hinges on the racing game you suggested. A multiplayer or online option that may click with what Tex is could be puzzle based. Play puzzles against each other or try and solve a randomly generated adventure room before your opponent. Maybe even play a good old fashioned round of Parcheezi ^^

The console market is probably an avenue that will most benefit Tex's future. Broken Sword 3 had some pretty good success being released on xbox and PS2. I am of a firm belief though that Tex's home is on PC. Like most of the patrons here though, i'll take what i can get ^^
Very interesting stuff. I'm not a fan of consoles. Never owned one to date, but my kids do. However, the images Vracar linked to are impressive. It looks like they could indeed do good likenesses of Tex, Chelsea, et al. Given a new Tex game, available only on Xbox 360, I guess I'd break down & get one.

re: Alex's idea of $500 a month. Alex, are you crazy? Is that $500 US? If you can afford that much a month, my hat's off to you. I don't know many people who can. In fact, I don't personally know anyone who can. $100 a month is still pushing it, but might be do-able. But $500, forget it! Unless, of course, I win the lottery :D
