Eviction and Packing Woes
Well it was bound to happen. For the month of July I had absolutely NO work so the landlord/company was unimpressed by this so they sent me an eviction notice. JOY! The funny thing is I was moving for September anyway but I guess they couldn't wait that long. I am actually debating now just letting this thing go to court so I can take as long as humanly possible to give them the few hundred dollars that they apparently desperately need.
I mean I have been here for 3 years and occasionally been late with the rent but always informed that landlord that it was gonna be late and would always pay up in full when I had the money. As soon as this company took over they seemed to not give a damn about their tenants and only speak with dollars. I clearly recall paying my February rent in April (yes a real life Tex moment) and the previous landlord/human being was alright with that. We actually had a decent business relationship and would frequently talk to one another. When this company bought these buildings, there ceased to be the human interaction and spoke only in a legal context. Well now that just pisses me off.
As of this moment I have the cash they want so desperately, but now PURELY out of spite I am debating taking this thing to court and dragging this out for as long as humanly possible. I am aware that I clearly owe this money to them and I WILL give it to them, I just want to make it take far longer than it would have had they just waited. Here's what bugs me, what if I were a single mother who was down on her luck, or maybe I were an elderly person on a fixed income? Would they just boot them out if they couldn't pay up in the same time frame as well? I mean no tolerance for delinquency with anyone? Did they just decide to boot me out because I am NOT one of those 2 examples? Either way it just pisses me off. I dunno this just bugs the hell outta me. I mean I was moving anyway and they KNEW that, so why the HELL did they do it?
Sorry about the rant but I felt like documenting it. I'll keep everyone posted on what's going on. I get my newer/bigger/better home in September. I am curious of what people think I should do. Should I prolong this stupid thing just to get my point across despite the fact it may fall on deaf ears, or should I just concede and get it over with and be a bigger man yadda yadda and have no fun with it. Lemme know what you think.

My vote?
No fun for you, Electron Stu. You don't need to throw your karmic balance out of whack for this. Plus, judgements against you can show up on your credit report, thus screwing you out of future opportunities. For seven years or MORE!
Bite the bullet.
Besides, they can sue you for their legal fees. And if the judge is cranky, he can make you pay them.
Don't go there my good man.
I understand your pain...really I do.

Listen to Jen. Jen is a voice of reason and sanity. Listen to Jen. Jen knows what's best for you. Jen is all-powerful and wise!
Okay, maybe not omnipotent, but that's sound advice she's throwing your way. I suggest you cowboy up and take it.
And not in a Brokeback Mountain-sorta way.

Pirates, vampires, zombies, ninjas, ghouls, aliens, goblins, monsters, robots, sorcerers, undead, werewolves, demons, mutated dinosaur-cyborgs and those pesky phone salesmen! The shotgun is a one-size-fits-all solution!
1. As the others feel, so do I....pain! Big business is just that and there is no reason for them to have a human side. Just the way it is.
2. Keep the cash and put it towards your next flop. Screw the credit report. Credit is NOT an assert - it is the bane of North America. That is the plain truth. See #3.
3. Unfortunately, if you do not have cash to pay for everything, you need credit. This is the trap that ensnares most people. I have learned in recent months to forgo creditors and pay cash for as much as possible. I'm currently involved with a large (250,000) group of people who are building a monstrous internet business. They are setting people financially free. NOTHING ON CREDIT! You'd be surprised how advantageous this is. Example: If you have ONE credit card with monthly payments, you'll pay thousands more over the years paying off that debt.
See #4.
4. Credit - what a superb way of keeping people down, forcing them to wprk extra hours, forcing them to get more credit to get more stuff or to simply pay the IRS or other taxes. Again, this is unfortunate but a necessary evil for most of us. See #5
5. What people really need is different thinking. I highly recommend all of Robert Kyisocki's books. Rich Dad, Poor Dad; Cash Flow Quadrant; The Business School for People Who Like Helping People; et al. Personally, I found the Cash Flow Quadrant to be quite revealing. In fact, many people get down right angry when they read that book. On the other hand, it has set many people free - free from the standard we were all raised to believe in, a standard that no longer works, a standard based on Industrial Age thinking. Has anyone noticed that the Industrial Age is booming - overseas? We are in the Information Age and it is this transference that will create the greatest transfer of wealth the world has ever seen. See #6
6. Another book I highly recommend is The Next Millionaires by Paul Zane Pilser, one of the most influential and prophetic economists of our time. He states there are 4 things that will make 10,000,000 millionaires by 2016. They are: The internet, home based business, health and wellness, and the transfer of electronic information.
Sorry for the rambling but it is time to recognize the truth - the times are changing and those who change with it the fastest will benefit the mostest. 2cents from TOG.

But if you pay the rent, that improves your credit report.
Hmmmm....dilema.
WWTD? I think that depends which game path you're taking.
Sadly, depending on how the lease is written, they can probably sue you for the money owed even if you leave. (Of course they may not bother for one month's rent.) But, I think Jen is right here. You certainly don't want to owe legal fees, etc.
I would avoid court b/c lawyers can be nasty. Your landlord could have a powerful lawyer who is good at what he does compare to your lawyer since landlords probably has more $$$.
I suggested to pay the landlord off the bill you owned him then pack up your stuff and put it in a U-HUL truck and leave it one of your friends house. And then go live with your friends if one of them lets you from kindness of their heart until Steptember then move to your new home. This would improved your credits and no court involved.
Oh! Uh, wait this is Canada he is living in then. I have no clue the different between Canada and USA laws and how their court system work if Electron Stu goes for it or decided to take a step back and think about it?

Alright guys I just thought I'd keep you posted on what is going on. I caved and paid the rent. I didn't feel like putting up with the fight. As it turns out even with the notice I still have until the end of the month which is when I was gonna leave anyway, so I REALLY don't know why they decided to take that route. It's like a boss that tries to fire you after you quit. Pointless.
Anyway Jim you had some really good points which I have been slowly coming across myself. For the most part I have been living that existence. Yes I have credit but as soon as regular money comes in it will all be paid off and not used unless it's for emergencies. (I used it in the past because of my return to school otherwise I wouldn't have touched it.) I even debated claiming bankruptcy just to wipe the slate clean but then I didn't feel like doing that either so here I am broke, in debt up to my ass and still trudging on. Things are starting to go more smoothly (just go a gig to make a commercial!) so money should be less infrequent anyway. Thanks for all the advice guys I kinda needed to vent there.

Good luck, Stu. All the best. I'm sure I speak for all of us in hoping the best for you. Sounds like you have a lot of perseverence, optimism, and hope, and that speaks well of you. With those attributes you should come out ok.
Again, all the best!
Again, all the best!
Never too late for coffee, never too early for beer.
Sorry to hear of your woes. You did the right thing with the credit report. You don't want to get blacklisted if you can avoid it. I did a credit search on my own name recently and it came up with addresses I'd forgotten about myself and old credit cards that I've not had in years. Every application you make would look up that stuff eg if you ever want a mortgage, loan, hire purchase. so it's good to keep it as clean
I also learnt here that they score you every time you miss a payment. 1-3 is ok-ish, 4-7 is bad but 8+ missed payments over a 3 year period and you are effectively a bad liability
