War of the Worlds
I just had to relate this...
Last night my family and I went to see the live performance of Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds.
It was an amazing show with excellent lights, CGI, singers, the holographic head of Richard Burton and a brilliant orchestra.
It's one of those things i doubt i'll ever forget. If you get a chance to see it if they tour near you, i highly suggest you go.

Well while the film wasn't bad, i had a problem with it being set in modern times instead of Victorian England... and the film focusing on Tom Cruise and his family... and not being the musical version which i love ^^

Well, here I go again. The original movie is a classic indeed! One of the all-time great sci-fi films. I loved it!
The remake, in my humble opinion (ever notice that there is only two letters that differentiates opinion from onion?), was very good. Great? No, but very good. Classic? No, but worthy of honorable mention.
To me, if you dare to make a redo of an original classic movie you better take into consideration 1) Today's audience, 2) CGI, 3) great actors, 4) good direction, and 5) staying as true as possible to the original without making it look like a cheap imitation. I believe War of the Worlds and King Kong both fall into these parimeters. Can any movie rise to the level of greatness as the superb classics? No! But to come close and still be entertaining is plausible, possible and profusctitatious. OK, so I made up that last word. I haven't posted in a few days due to the flu bug and I need all the help I can get. Anyways, I respect everyone's critique and understand your reasons for them. I really enjoyed the two aforementioned remakes and PRAY that other remakes can do as well.
BTW, as an aside, I loved Superman Returns and MI:III. Although not remakes they stayed within the true theme of the originals.

Oh, JTOG, I bet we could talk for hours about the old Sci Fi movies. Do you, like me, remember watching those B movies on TV when we were kids (Invaders From Mars, Gorgo, The Swamp Thing, The Thing, Them!, The Incredible Shrinking Man, The Day The Earth Stood Still, Kronos, The Blob (wasn't Steve McQueen great?), and so many others whose titles I can't remember)?
Ah, those were the days.
Ah, those were the days.
Never too late for coffee, never too early for beer.
Heh, wow. I didn't even know there was an original War of the Worlds movie.
I only knew of the HG Wells book that started it all, The Orson Wells radio broadcast, the Jeff Wayne musical and the Tom Cruise movie.
Guess i'll have to imdb the original movie and see who's in it

You betcha, Gary. I have a DVD version of The Day the Earth Stood Still, one of the all time great classics. One of these days I will buy (if its available) Forbidden Planet starring Leslie Nielson, et al. THEM! What a terrific "monster" movie! And The Thing - WOW! That was one of my favs long ago. Too bad the remake wasn't near as good.

You're right about the remake. That whole movie can be summed up by what one of the characters says as that severed head grows crab legs and crawls away. . .Jim the old guy wrote: And The Thing - WOW! That was one of my favs long ago. Too bad the remake wasn't near as good.

Heya, been awhile since my last post. Ive got a new job and am really busy these days.
I saw the live show on its first tour around the UK. Was surprised to see it re-touring as as far as I knew they only intended to do one tour. They must of had alot of great feedback and sales etc. to do a re-tour. Good that more people can get to see it.
It was indeed a great show. Did the fantastic classic music justice and wonderful performances all round. I took alot of pics and what strikes me about them is all the wonderful colours. I wasnt sure how good visually it was going to be with limited set pieces etc. But the lighting and utilisation of the elements they had was enough to impress.

I think the films are OK but its the music by Jeff Wayne that I really like. As a little kid the musical creeped me out though with the deep voiced narrator speaking ominously etc. But the music is the best.
The old black and white film is of course a classic sci-fi. I dont know how much I think of it, its a simple film but does the job, but its undoubtedly a classic of the old sci-fi genre either way. The new film is OK mainly for the effects. There was some annoying aspects of focusing on set characters who each had their own set agendas but it wasnt as bad as I thought it was going to be.
The radio broadcast I have somewhere and as a kid I remember seeing a documentary about its effects when first broadcast (the big scare). I dont know how much of an exaggeration the documentary was but I still remember the bit with two parents hiding in a road tunnel attempting to poison their kids so that they wouldn't get abducted by the aliens and have to suffer the torture of alien experimentation. But the police turn up and stop them.
Anyway gotta love the musical though. And theres some nice remix albums out there too.
I love classical and modern music combined ( nearest thing to a genre title for that style Ive found is Classical Crossover, not many artists/bands doing that kinda thing ). But I recently found a new band, a quartet called Wild, and on their album they had this War of the Worlds remix which was an awesome treat:
