How many more Tex Murphy games could be made?
I've just been reading over Aaron's little bird thread where he laments to all of our woes and promises to bring Tex back in some fashion but is pushing hard for a game. I believe there will be a game of some kind of format. When this game eventually surfaces, do you think there will be more to follow or does Aaron simply intend on tidying the loose ends and giving the fans the closure that they have longed for? I'd like to think that they are working toward the much discussed Polarity/Chance/Trance trillogy. I'm not quite sure they'll make it that far though.
I don't diagree with that, but we have to remember we're in the minority of the gaming industry. If it's all but guaranteeable that Tex has one more game left in him, & everything after that would hinge on that one game, then everything has to be resolved in that one game or we end up with another Overseer-like cliffhanger. I'm sure you'd love that! [rolls eyes at the thought]

I would say if there is a game made then I would doubt aaron would leave it on another clifhanger. Granted I am sure he would leave it with room to make another but I would say after the 10 year wait from overseer another clifhanger is a bad idea.
However I have my doubts a game is possible, I hope if a game isnt made in the next 2 years or so that they decide to go ahead and release some sort of ending even if its only a few paragraphs writen on these fourms.

Well technically the next game to be made wouldn't have to be a continuation of Overseer. Yes, i know we all badly want to know how that ends, but i would be happy with a Tex game that's a complete stand alone case.
Also that would mean if the game did do well, the famed trilogy might have a chance

Thats actually a good point. If the game isnt just a downloadable game from and indie producer and actually has real retal support then its a good bet a publisher would want to treat it like a new series with a stand alone game and not a continuation of overseer. Think about it how hard would it be to sell an idea of a sequal to a game which hasnt been produced in 10 years and when it was had serious turn down in sales from UAKM to Overseer. (granted there are good reasons why)
I just dont see the conept in any form selling in todays market. I think the only way this happens is if its done on the cheap and privately in a web based format. And even then it would require serious financial backing which again seems unlikely.
But heck you never know perhaps they can get it done, I for one would be more than happy to play any tex game at this point.

And with services like Steam and Gametap being quite popular (especially for older titles), i could easily see the Tex games finding a home there.

I can't. The problem with Tex games is that every single one is over sized for its generation. This is a great thing because it means a lot of technology has been put into the game (hence why its sooo big
).
Now unless you see them making this game 1.2GB I doubt Steam will be a viable option. Steam would pretty much kill any idea of us having FMVs.

Ah but we've come such a long way in video compression since the Tex games were made.
Plus even at a gig or so, that means nothing to the majority of broadband users in countries that aren't Australia.

It's a big deal when you consider we now have HD technologies. I'd rather it be 50GB
Modern FMVs these days have to be high def, its now an industry standard (only in recent times actually, so I know someone will bring up C+C but that was before all this High Definition gaming crap came onto the scene)
PS3 has launched the new HDef gaming format war, (just as Overseer did with the DVD
) so we need to start accepting that games are going to be played with lots more content, better resolutions and faster load times.
I simply don't see Digital Distro being viable for HD games yet. HD is 30-50GB, try downloading that per month?
The problem with FMVs is that they take up a lot of space TM was most likely shot at a low resolution until Overseer came along (except they fucked up majorly on the codec) The resolution for high def is like nearly 20x what UAKM was. UAKM came of 4CDs (which is 1/2 of a DVD). This just tells you that if an FMV based TM game were to be released, rest assured it WILL NOT feature on Digital Distro, its just waaaaay too big.
I think Cub would know a bit more on this seeing his background in film. But yeah rest assured FMVs these days are not small, the compression is still crap (hence why we are using BluRay and HDDVD instead of building better algorithms) But the quality will be amazing. By the time the next TM game comes out, HD media will be the standard everyone will use for video games (reason being is because the resolution for resources on everything will increase, almost double to quadruple times its original size (I know this from my Experience on Deus Ex NV and HDTP).)
The only way I can see Digital Distribution surviving is if Broadband becomes more powerful and more reaching because at present I don't see it happening. The issue that most gamers are faced with is Do I download the game or do I just say fork it and order a copy of the game to my door? I've found that the only benefit that DD has is with games shipped over seas, it eliminates the Shipping cost which is a god send here in Australia (because its nearly 2x the initial US price). So if Broadband becomes cheaper and more powerful then yeah I can definitely see more people doing DD and I can definitely see TM on Steam. However, if that didn't happen, they would do things the old fashioned way I bet.
Its a bit too early to say. And lets not forget that it takes at least 1.5 years to produce a game these days.

I'd agree that downloadable installments is a last resort, even if FMV is not used. The romance of going out to the store and picking up a tangible off the shelf to keep for life is slowly going out of fashion, I hope the trend stops. I certainly don't think it suits Tex. But I would suggest it as a LAST resort since I want to play at least 1 more TM game in this lifetime.
I think they should use a cliffhanger like the one at the end of UAKM so it leaves room if they decide to add a sequel. I'm not a fan of this episode stuff either. I just bought Sam and Max season 1 in the boxed version like it was the full the game so they should stick with giving it to you all at once. As far as the solution to bring back Tex Chris and Aaron need to start another company like the one Microsoft took and work on other projects so they'll have the money to make three Tex games if need be.
