Mirror's Edge: a new First Person Shooter WITHOUT GUNS.

http://au.gamespot.com/ps3/action/mirro ... ks;story;3

Finally, it's being done! I've been arguing for years that it is possible to create an immersive, involving game on a FPS engine without the need to handle a gun but also create a great level of thrill and adventure. This game strips away all the cliche ingrediants that have become the trademark of the FPS genre and accentuates the importance of character and story. Did I also mention that the graphics look amazing? This is the type of game Tex Murphy could possibly become, hanging out for this one (no pun intended).

Also see http://www.on-mirrors-edge.com/ This is a very detailed fan site which has an FAQ from the developers and screenshots. Can't wait!

You can quote me on this: THIS GAME WILL REVOLUTIONISE THE FIRST PERSON SHOOTER GENRE TO THE SAME EXTENT THAT QUAKE, HALF LIFE AND UNREAL DID.
Looks interesting enough... I couldn't find a Release Date for it though... :(

There was a big feature on this in Edge magazine last year (which got me really excited). I think there are weapons, but the idea is that your enemies can mostly kill you by blinking, so it's mostly free running and escaping. I see it perhaps like a first person 'Assassin's Creed' mixed with 'Prince of Persia: Sands of Time'.

So to sum up, yes... excited :)

AHEM! With a dash of Blade Runner and the Bourne series if you don't mind! ;)
It's reminding me of Urban Runner with the lack of weapons usage and the running for your life and all...

Technically, first-person-shooters without guns have been around for a long time.

I've played with cross-bows, sling-shots, bug spray, knives. I even used a spoon once!

Of course, when you absolutely, positively have to get the job done, nothin' beats a good ol' shotgun.
Makes you wonder why they never came out with a really good MacGyver Game...

Does anyone know if the game actually has a deep and involving storyline?

Pirates, vampires, zombies, ninjas, ghouls, aliens, goblins, monsters, robots, sorcerers, undead, werewolves, demons, mutated dinosaur-cyborgs and those pesky phone salesmen! The shotgun is a one-size-fits-all solution!
Oh definitely! If you check the fan website I posted above, I think there's a Q&A with the developer where they said the main motivation for not having the FPS as gun driven is so the player's attention is focused on the character and story.

Having said that, I think it's fair to suggest that what the game lacks in gunplay will be definitely made up for in its story telling.
I find it shallow and pedantic. Na, just kiddin'. I'm intrigued!

With today's gamers they needed to take the gun away, otherwise the player would most likely half destroyed 5 city blocks before realizing their mission objective was to meet with the guy at the diner on City Block 3...

Speaking of a spoon, Doc. I recall playing through The Punisher videogame that came out a coupla years ago.

And as you're using a dock crane to knock at a cargoship, Frank Castle is musing that it's "Like breaking open a guy's head with a teaspoon... Funny... The things you learn."

Pretty much. The time has come for an FPS reinvention, otherwise it would just be another generic, formulaic addition to the genre.
