URU

When discussing TEx games I mentioned I was playing URU and did anyone on this site play this game or know anything about it. I was directed to Nilo's place but I do not think he is involved with this game. Am I correct?
URU is a Version of Myst online, right??? That's about the extent of my knowledge about it...

So tell us, why do you bring it up??? I know James has mentioned it before... You can probably expect him to comment about it, I'm sure...

... And one from me. URU is a game that takes you on a journey to the heart of an old fictional civilization. They created Ages which is ultimately MYST, Riven, and other Ages that have been created. You go to a place called D'ni, and you explore Ages. There is a three piece offline version of this game witch I highly recommend if you want to get into it first.

Now over the past 5 years or so, there have been online versions of URU that has kept the storyline going. There is a very long story, but it was yanked offline, and Gametap picked them up. Unfortunately, after having a fantastic run on Gametap, Gametap has decided to not continue the URU franchise on their servers. It will be closing down at the end of this month.

I need to pay a month to Gametap to log on and then never sign up for it again. I have no use for it cause I only played URU. There are talks about Cyan keeping it online, but I dono if URU will go on online. It makes me sad that I haven't been there in like five months and I have missed almost everything.

But oh well. Cyan has always survived one way or another. And now, a message from James... or anyone else who will come out of the wood work...

redefine sucess."

That sounds interesting, I just might have to check that out...

Sowden, do you have a current website for this URU??? I'd appreciate it...

I am a newcomer to the online URU and sad to say on April 10 it is closing down. From what I understand the game can still be played but there will be no updates, no new things going on to challenge players in the game etc. I tried contacting Cyan or URU developers but no one answers my emails. I paid one month to GameTap and have since cancelled because it is URU I wanted to play.

I am stuck in the game and so am looking for someone with a saved game and remembered someone here mentioned Nilo's place. But am sure he is into only the Tex M. games. So far on other game sites have yet to get a response to my quest for a saved game. It is a spot where fast keyboard and mouse manipulation is required - of which I am one lousy player. I usually have to give up in frustration and use a saved game.

Have had American McGee's Alice in Wonderland on for over a year because cannot find anyone playing or has played the game for a saved game. Stuck there in same kind of keyboard/mouse manipulation and poor Alice has been drowned in her river of tears so many times, she is one bedraggled mess:)
I'm the one that sent you to Nilo's Place... His website is designed for Tex Games only, but if you send him an email he might be able to help you with your problem... I don't know if Nilo has been involved with URU or not...

I guess getting the website isn't that great of an idea since it will be shutting down within the next month... Kind of sucks, sounded really good...

Yes, from what I can understand from the friend that sent me the idea of joining it was a great idea. Seems people played, shared ideas and problems and always the programmers were updating and creating new things for the players - as much as I can understand what went on. Could get no answers from the site itself and probably because they are shutting down. However, it seems that one can still play URU from the downloaded game - I guess. Again no one answers to let me know so will just have to wait and see what happens to the game after the shut down deadline.

I suppose if one wanted to spend $9.95 just for the game and hope that it did not delete itself after the shutdown, one could just play URU without all the fancy goings on that are currently in place. Have posted on the forum about 'hey what happens to us after shutdown' and it seems no one knows exactly.

April 10 fast approaching.

Will ask Nilo about URU but I think he is involved just in Tex games.
URU was a great experience when it worked like it was supposed to, and was kind of a big letdown when it didn't. There were many times in URU where I felt like I was paying money to sit in a glorified chat room, but on the occasions where I was able to collaboratively solve an Age with other explorers, or witness a major story event, it was a fantastic time. For me, those good moments didn't come as often as I would have liked. Unfortunately, I think URU has continually been the victim of a great idea dragged down by lack of time and resources. There were instances where it definitely felt like the good folks at Cyan had been forced to rush things out the door. I would really have liked to have seen what URU would have been capable of if they'd really had the money and manpower they needed. I'll miss it for what it was (foibles and all), and for what it could have been.
What you say James makes sense from my limited experience with URU. Per usual in the gaming world money, lack of resources and time to do what developers really want to do re making a game an experience to remember, all will affect the game. Might you have played the disc game? I have the discs and so am looking for saved games at places where I am going to need them. I have arthritis badly in my hands and it cramps my style when it comes to fine tuning movements especially re keyboard and mouse coordination.

But will keep struggling with getting the gal in that bucket and hoping someone may come up with a saved game here.

I loved the whole Myst series and am sadden to see this experience end. I understand though that Cyan will keep on and make more games? Am I wrong in this?

Suppose that site like the Tex games suffer from same limitations re making really good and enjoyable games. Well when we all make the next move to that big gaming experience in the sky, maybe we can all get our 'druthers' then.
There are only so many updates you can put into any game before you hit a wall that you just can't climb...
Even Tex Murphy, eventually you would run out of World Saving Cases or the fact that Tex Would just get too old to be doing it... So then you either bring in a new young detective to take over or you stop...
Final Fantasy will hit a wall sooner or later as well... No game can go on forever, except maybe Madden... lol

True true - sad reality of life.
Final Fantasy is not a game series tied in with eachother, they are all stand-alone games. With the possible exception of the FF X2 disaster, but we don't speak of... that... thing... in civilized conversation :D

Personally I would love to see another game like good old Chrono Trigger. God I miss that game.

-Fred
Pirates, vampires, zombies, ninjas, ghouls, aliens, goblins, monsters, robots, sorcerers, undead, werewolves, demons, mutated dinosaur-cyborgs and those pesky phone salesmen! The shotgun is a one-size-fits-all solution!
I release that, but still they will hit a wall eventually...

Gee what was Chrono Trigger about - have not heard of that game.
I never played it myself, but here's a link that explains the game and characters and everything to you...

Though I'm sure Fred can probably break this down to about 3 or 4 sentences and have it make just as much sense...
