Anyone ever gotten a biopsy?
I have to say I'm not a big fan of the doctors office. I have to go in this week for a biopsy under my arm. Anyone care to tell me how much this is going to hurt?
I imagine it must be better than getting one in the stomach or something which my father had to do recently. But I'm still not the biggest fan of the idea.

Yes I did, and it was quite painful.
I had two: one behind my neck, and another on the back of my calf. They both left small circular scars, but since I got this done when I was a kid, and as I grew, the became more dull but expanded in size a bit.
I turned out to be fine and there wasn't anything wrong. My mother just got too worried about nothing, like she always did. In hindsight, I think I should've tried to refuse. But you, and an adult, should go ahead with it. Especially under the arm. That's not far from the lymph nodes.

It shouldn't really be any more painful than a large Needle... It should end up being a needle, probably about 18, about the same size they would normally use for an IV... It will be sore because of the location in which they are doing it... It isn't going to be comfortable, I'm not going to lie to you... The difference between a Biopsy and a regular Needle, is they do it rather slowly, which is one of the worse parts... They should use something to numb the area in which they will be inserting the needle, but that isn't going to help much a couple hours later when that wears off...
It will be almost like having Dental work done, it shouldn't feel much at first, but a couple hours later you're not gonna be happy...
At least that is how I remember mine, but mine was done in my neck, not under my arm... Under the arm is some sensitive tissue...
Good Luck & Best Wishes...

They "Should" use a local Anesthetic for that while you're in the office... So you'll probably feel some pressure, but you should really feel too much pain until afterwards, you'll be awfully sore...freepizza wrote:Well, I don't really mind the pain afterwards. I have no problem with pain. I just have problem with pain while at the doctors office.
I'm going off of a Biopsy I had on my Neck, under the Arm the tissue is a lot different... Does the lymph node itself hurt in anyway or is there kind of a numbness to it??? That will be important as well...

No, it doesn't hurt. Which is why I have to get the biopsy in the first place. But I have had it for several months with no symptoms, and my white blood cell count is normal so we don't think that it is cancer.
But that's good to know. I don't mind being sore. I just feel uncomfortable in a docs office really, and I don't like to feel pain in a place I feel uncomfortable.

It's probably nothing more than a Cyst... It will probably come back as nothing... I have my best wishes for you and that's all my best wishes say it is... I have a Cyst in my palm of all places, it's rather small, but can be annoying at times...
No Pain, Blood Count is normal, I have high hopes for you...
They'll probably go through some muscle to get the Biopsy, so you'll probably still come away from it with a little soreness, but in a couple weeks when they come back with your report, sounds like all should be good...
Always better to be safe than sorry of course... Please keep us updated...
When is the Biopsy???

According to the movie Dune, "Pain is the mind-killer." I've had several IVs over the years and they're noting more than a big poke, like a shot but just a little worse. A bit of advice: if you tell yourself it's going to hurt (especially if you're at the Dr.s office), then it will. Anticipation and fear can be disheartening and actually make matters worse.
Look on the bright side. If they find nothing, great! If they find something, then the following treatment won't be near as bad as waiting too long. Malloy is right. A stubbed toe, hitting your head on a cupboard door, stepping on a nail, all can be a lot worse than a biopsy. Prepare yourself mentally and it may not be as bad as you think.
Finally, are thoughts are with you.
