Can't run Links Extreme Demo

(Not a Tex game, but still in the family)
I downloaded this Links Extreme demo and installed it:

But it won't work at all! I open it, and the screen goes black for a 1/4 of a second and then nothing. I tried lowering my screen resolution and Windows 2000's 'compatibility mode,' but no go.
This worries me, because I can't think of any reason why this should be happening. Maybe my hardware is too new.
