Raiders of the Lost Ark!

Well, as many of you will be aware I was minus 4 years old when the original Raiders of the Lost Ark came out in 1981. I was also still too young in 1989 (being only 4 years old) to have seen any of the original Indiana Jones films at the cinemas.

Last night one of my dreams came true! I got to see Raiders of the Lost Ark on the big screen! As part of a movie community I am part of here, they often have special events where you get to watch new films (and occasionally old classics) and meet the makers, and the actors afterwards. So last night, I saw an original and pristine 35mm print (only played once before and shipped over from the UK) of Raiders, and got to have a Q&A session with Karen Allen in person afterwards!

I must say, seeing Raiders in all its glory was magnificent, and further fortified my belief that it is still the greatest of the Indy films... although I also think the Last Crusade comes very close. Its true what they say about having to see a movie at the cinemas to get the full experience... becuase my girlfriend used to like Crusade better than Raiders, until last night where she said that she had changed her mind having seen Raiders on the big screen. The sound was loud too! In all its Dolby Stereo Glory!!

Well there you have it... I thought I would share, as I know some of you folks would've seen it at the cinemas when it came out, and I am so happy to have been given a second chance!

I recently netflixed it, Cub, as I was -2 when it was released. It was only on my home cinema, which is quite nice, but obviously no true theater experience. It really is a great movie, one of my top 20 for sure.

Glad you enjoyed it as well!

Didn't Jim once say he spent his 40th Wedding Anniversary watching it?

Bazing!

Great experience indeed. The big theaters here finally started a habit of projecting some classics every now and then. I caught Alien and Aliens, The Thing, Goldfinger, Raiders and Dr Strangelove like this.

Then I decided to get a 200" screen from one of the theaters' provider I know and a neat but inexpensive HD projector, plugged on the XBox 360, sound sytem and other DVD player. Greatest part is, the setting (projector and screen) is worth less than a good 46" plasma.

Then I proceeded to watch all my DVDs in the second living room (only room with a high ceiling) transformed in a mini-theater. I'm pretty sure I came the first time I watched Bullitt in all its glory. It's only in "theater" you realise it truly is "the best damn car chase ever filmed, period".

I keep hearing about how people have these Theaters that play the Classics, it's made me think of opening one up around here... As popular as the classics are, it could be a good money maker...

If I ever opened a multiplex I'd be sure to dedicate one of the rooms to classic movies from around the world. I don't know if a theater strictly playing classics could survive, but I'm sure one projection room within a theater with decent traffic would be very profitable.

Hey, did I already know that you and me seem to be the same age Cub? 1985, I like that Back to the Future started that year although don't like as much that I wasn't able to see the trilogy in the cinema. There's a lot of films I'd like to see on the big screen. Congrats on getting the opportunity!

Hmmm I had a feeling you were around my age, but didn't know how exact. That's cool, lets be friends. hehe

Anyway, I have a friend who's brother was born on October 25, 1985... which you will remember is the date Marty first time travels. But BTTF is another trilogy I would love to see on the Big screen.... with BluRay and HD projectors the visual fidelity of images projected on larger screens (such as Frank's 200" supper whammo-vision) is getting spectacular!

When Indy, Back to the Future, and LOTR comes out on BluRay I am doing the marathon thing! 3 days, 3 trilogies... and 3 annoyed neighbors!

Yeah, when cinemas go digital its going to be pretty interesting. I heard that eventually cinemas will be going digital like we have in our homes already but that it will take time as each screen costs a lot of money to switch and multiplexes would have to spend a ton to fully convert to the digital age. I know of a cinema that does digital but the only drawback is that it is a smaller cinema/screen. I did check out a film there though and the quality was very good.

Dang...make me feel old.

I saw Raiders in the movie theatre when it was 1st released. I was just a kid living in south Florida. We went to the 9 ish show. I left the dark theatre shaking in my boots with my mom, the images of dripping and screaming melting faces burned into my brain. My anxiety only increased as we walked outside into the dark night where people were dressed of in these WEIRD costumes, fishnet stockings, corsets and bright red lipstick on a GUY??? holding rolls of toilet paper and toast. A midnight show of Rocky Horror was going to take place after we cleared out. (Of course what did a little runt like me know about that? Just kinda scary and freaky)

Talk about childhood trauma.

Actually it's still burned into my brain. :P

Grand experience though Cub! Glad you shared it with us!!!

Those good Blue Ray movies aren't arriving quickly enough. I could use a LOT less new comedy crap no one cares to see in high res and a lot more good movies everyone wants to watch on their big tv's.

And yah, the quality's getting pretty good with projectors, but don't get me wrong, I'm still very much in love with the damn Pioneer Kuro. Seeing Casino Royale on it made my heart melt in ways I couldn't imagine :P Now if they made them in cinema sizes... I believe in OLED!

And so apparently I'm a tad older than Cub but younger than Jen. For the record no one is keeping, first movie I saw in theater was Batman. Left a lasting impression, too
