Pet Lovers...

Have any pet lovers had to deal with surgery???

I took my dog in for Knee surgery on Thursday... I picked him up Thursday evening... He is having such a hard time getting up from a laying or sitting position and I'm just not sure what to do for him... I don't want to risk hurting him anymore... He even peed himself just laying not long after I got him home... I've been able to get him outside once, but had to carry him back up the steps...

I'm just not sure what else I can do... They said not to let the bandage get wet, so I wrapped it in cling wrap and then put a sock on his paw... So getting wet isn't an issue, but I just want him to move a little bit more...

Gosh I hope he's ok. Maybe he just needs time to get his strength back, but I don't really know.

I would say he probably just needs to get his strength back. Still, if, after watching him for a day or so, you don't see improvement, I wouldn't hesitate to call the doc and inquire.

Yeah it seems to have been the Sedative that had him out of it last night... He is still hesitant about doing a few things, but I guess that is to be expected...

He has eaten today and has been outside 3 times... He has moved around a lot more, walking from here to there... He is able to sit down much easier now... Last night when he would be up it would take him a good 3 or 4 minutes before he would finally sit and lay down after standing in the spot he wanted to sit/lay...

He'll go down the steps, but I have to pick him up and bring him back up...

He seems to be doing about 50% better than he was last night... So I guess I was just a worry-wart...

Yeah I agree if I feel something isn't right I will definitely be on the phone with the Vet... We've got a couple of all night Vets around here as well, so if he steps down on it or something and collapses, I've got somewhere to take him, I pray that does happen though...

Thanks for the interests and concerns, I appreciate them...

I used to have different pets as a kid but I don't really remember their vet treatments back then (probably mostly my parents responsibility with me being so young). And I fell in love with gerbils after my first pair so I've only kept gerbils since (if I could I'd have a whole menagerie of pets but not got the time). On my 4th pair of gerbils now (they live for about 3 - 4 years).

My last pair of gerbils had to go through quite a few operations (possibly some kind of genetic disease they both inherited). But they pulled through OK and lived to an old age. Depending on the age of the gerbil an operation can take more out of them and mean it takes them longer to recover. The pair began to suffer from the problem when they were probably middle age or older I think (hard to remember), so they were quite sleepy and so on afterwards and perked up after a day or two. For very old gerbils operations are naturally more risky (but luckily I had success). Meanwhile I recently had to take a young gerbil (A year and few months old) for an operation and they acted like nothing had happened (although they weren't suffering much before either thankfully). But basically I think the younger the animal is the quicker the recovery. How old is the dog? (in comparison to the average lifespan of a dog that is).

As others have said, I would call the vet if the issues persist.

I'm really sorry to hear that :( The vet can't do anything for the poor guy? Has it had a good innings?

How old it is it?

It's hard to let animals go.... :(

Cinnamon passed away last night, she was around 12-13 years old, so she was up there.

That's too bad mang, sorry for the loss.

I'm so sorry Travis. What an awful loss. Our thoughts are with you.
That's sad Travis. And Baf, hope pooch is doing okay.

I have never actually owned any pets of any kind. I would love a cat but my partner is allergic, and outrlifestyles are a bit too busy for a dog. So I guess it will be a while before I can understand how some of you folks feel... but my sympathies are still there, in all sincerity.

Well I would reccomend gerbils. They're quite low maintenance and cheap (unless you spoil them like me, but even then of course small animal toys are cheaper than dog/cat toys) since their favourite toy is a cardboard loo roll. They're quite clean so you just clear them out every 3 - 4 weeks (they live in a dry tank, a gerbilarium). They're highly inquisitve/curious so they are easily entertained by things. Compared to dogs you don't have to take them out for long walks, just handle them every so often and place them in a playpen or separate play-tank for a bit for variety and exercise. They don't require you to wash them as they groom each other (they are social and are best in pairs) and bathe in sand (they come from the Mongolian desert). Unlike hamsters they mostly do power naps and so are up either during the night or day, so whether you're up and about during the day or pulling a late nighter they may (or may not) be up with you (if I think they'll keep me up I wheel them elsewhere as the tank is on a wheeled shelving unit).

And so ends my gerbil promotion. :D If I could I would have a whole menagerie of pets with loads of gerbils, dogs, cats, chipmunks, fish etc. but no time but gerbils are my favourite.
To seal the deal here's my current pair when they were pups:

Bummer... Never a good thing losing a pet... Sorry to hear your lost your cat... After 12 Plus years, I'm sure she meant a lot...

Cub, Birds are rather low maintenance as well... Just keep the food and water bottles full and change out the paper... If you don't want to, you never have to touch them... You should talk to them though...
They do have furless cats which are hypoallergenic for people with allergies... They aren't the most attractive cat, but it is a solution for people with allergies, yet still love cats...

Just because you don't own a pet doesn't mean we doubt your sincerity...
