New Tex Murphy News!
Hello, I’m a long time Tex Murphy fan. I have been playing the Tex games for years, and they have inspired me to become a game developer some day. I recently heard some info that may be really good news for Tex fans!
Last week I attended the Game Developer’s Conference in San Francisco. On Tuesday night, at the IGDA party in the Westin Hotel, I had an interesting conversation with Doug Tabacco from Telltale Games. For those of you that don’t know, Telltale Games is an adventure game development company that has produced episodic games such as Sam & Max, Strong Bad’s Cool Game for Attractive People, and Wallace & Gromit’s Grand Adventures. I began talking with Doug about how much I love all of the episodic adventures that Telltale makes. He then asked me what my favorite adventure game of all time was, and I said The Pandora Directive.
It was then that he started to tell me about the possible plans between Telltale Games and Big Finish Games involving Tex Murphy. Apparently, Telltale Games is currently negotiating a deal with Big Finish Games to produce episodic Tex Murphy games! According to Doug, after all of the Wallace & Gromit episodes have been released, (so after this July), Telltale will either start to produce a Garfield episodic series, a Tex Murphy series, or both! Doug said that he wasn’t able to go into a lot of detail, and that everything was still in the planning stages, and approval was still needed from Big Finish Games. However, he did say that if Telltale becomes able to make Tex episodes, then they would be based off of the Radio Theater episodes, so that there would be six of them for the first season, using the same titles as the Radio Theater episodes (The Naked and the Bed, The Month of the Living Dead, etc.). I also asked him what Chris Jones and Aaron Conners would have to say about this, and he said that they would probably deny Telltale’s possible involvement with Tex Murphy since they are waiting for Three Cards to Midnight to be released. If the game sells well, the new Tex game will probably end up being produced entirely by Big Finish Games, but if Three Cards to Midnight does not sell well, it will probably be produced by Telltale Games.
I realize this may be really good news, or not so good news. What does everyone think? In the recent interview on Adventure Gamers, Aaron Conners did hint that they are considering episodic adventures. “Recently, though, we’ve started thinking about a new approach – maybe starting a Tex Murphy “series” of episodes, similar to what Telltale is doing with Sam & Max.”
I hope that Three Cards to Midnight sells really well. Let’s all buy 10 copies of it! Ideally, I think the new Tex game should be produced by Big Finish Games, and Telltale should make the Garfield episodes. However, since money is tight, I would rather have Telltale produce the next Tex game instead of there being no new Tex game at all. While Telltale does produce really great, fun, and humorous adventure games, the gameplay style and humor of their previous games is very different from the Tex Murphy games. Will they be able to pull it off?

Well as much as I'd love to jump to conclusions I have to remain reserved. Seeing as this is your first post and it is based on an unverified conversation I can't get excited over it. I mean if it is indeed true (unless it's that Garfield game) it is awesome news! BUT I will wait until I start hearing things from official channels before I lose my breath. Truthfully I hope it is true but we've had a few promising things in the past that haven't panned out. This is far too early in production to easily become another one of them. It's not that I don't trust you, it's just that . . . umm alright I don't trust you. Nah not really, I just see it more likely to be a conversation and nothing more. However I will keep an eye open and an ear to the ground to verify your story. Thanks for the heads up though, and welcome to the board!
Hey, guys, let's not be too hard on the new guy. I do agree that unsupported statements should be taken with a grain of salt, sometimes even by the truckload, but we have to remember that CJ & AC are in the process of marketing 3CTM. If they let the cat out of the bag that they had a Plan 10 for Tex Murphy's return, that could cause them difficulties in finding people to support the distribution of 3CTM, especially if it were distributed as a CD or DVD-rom.
Let's look on the bright side. If Chris is telling the truth, the only thing that would hinder or prevent Tex's return would be if 3CTM didn't sell well AND they couldn't tell their story they've been forced to sit on for over a decade AND didn't have creative control.
If you ask me, Chris is telling the truth. He's gone into a lot of detail that actually makes sense for the CJ/AC perspective. Why go third party when you can do it in-house? The only variable is whether or not 3CTM does well, and Telltale Games is a great backup plan regardless of that outcome. And they wouldn't be able to base their Tex Murphy: Season One on the Radio Theater without CJ & AC's approval, so the fact that that even came up in the supposed conversation is interesting to me. I don't think a fake would have included that detail. It really sounds to me like there are negotiations going on, and the outcome of 3CTM is key decision maker.
Regardless of what's really going on, CJ & AC have a plan for bringing Tex Murphy back. There have been times they haven't shared all their plans with us fans, and this may be one of those times. Again, it's a matter of the cat getting out of the bag. Sometimes it's an okay thing, sometimes it doesn't do you any good, and sometimes it hurts you. Hopefully this so-called rumor isn't going to be hurtful. I guess we'll just have to wait & see.

In the meantime, welcome to our international community, Chris!
Whether your info is true or false or just an elaborate April Fool's joke or the real deal, it is ALWAYS nice to see new visitors and posters at this site. Perhaps you could give us a little background info? Where you're from, age, hobbies (besides Tex), etc. It would be quite enjoyable to know more about you.
BTW, if we sound a little skeptical, please do not take it personal. We have heard news of this sort from different sources for many years now and we are very reserved in our desire to accept it as fact.

Agreed.Hammerhead wrote:Hey, guys, let's not be too hard on the new guy.
Chris, you'll have to excuse the fact that we've heard many similar stories over the years, only to have them turn out to be false, and have built up a skeptical reactionary response to rumors from new, unknown sources. Especially when posted on April Fools Day.
All that aside, we are always more than happy to have a new Tex fan join us here, and we hope you will stick around and help us celebrate Tex's return if/when it does happen!
Welcome aboard!
Exactly... It has been about 10 years since Overseer, as hopeful as we may be, Aaron has a reputation for coming and keeping this community up to date on news concerning Tex...Jim the old guy wrote:BTW, if we sound a little skeptical, please do not take it personal. Anyone who comes on this board would love to see another Tex game in almost any form... Some have even asked for the Adventure to be finished out in Radio Theater because they don't believe a Budget will ever be given for the game to be completed... So as hopeful and wishful as we are, as Jim said, we've been down the road a few times now...
In fact there was someone here just a couple of months ago trying to make us believe they could get a New Tex Adventure into the works...
If this is an April Fools Joke, my hats off to you... I must say it's better than walking into work and telling a co-worker their car just got stolen...

We can never have too many Chris on board, especially when they come bearing gifts! Be it an elaborate prank or an interesting piece of info, it's entertaining nonetheless. So welcome indeed!
As for the news itself, I'll play along for a minute. Wasn't Telltale involved at some point with the Tex rights? I know their name was brought up, but I don't remember the circumstances. I got in touch with them at the time for news regarding Tex. It goes back a little while though, way before they released the Sam & Max episode. The company was just starting. Someone recalls what I'm talking about?
