3D Realms dies.

I was having such a terrific day. I went to see Star Trek, got a Distinction on some University assessment, but now this:

There's no space between the lines of black and white here - it's over. It's so sad that such a talented team of programmers and artists like these will be out in the cold during the economic down term. Ironically, Duke Nukem Forever was finally approaching its completion date.
Wow... That truly is a blow to the industry... Such a shame and a waste...

Yes, what a shame, but... how long could the charade go on? 12 years? :|
Surely someone will buy the code for Duke Nukem Forever and finish...

Actually i just finished watching the very recently leaked tech demo of the game. It looks amazing.....such a waste.

But yes, they kind of had in coming in terms of the vague input regarding the development time. They've been following the same mantra for the last twelve years, not a good thing to be doing during a recession.

When you think of it though, the likelyhood of actually releasing the game is very slim. It's a possibility but also by quite a long shot. What you need to remember is that the game isn't in the can and ready to go, there's still work to be done. Obviously, staff need to be hired to finish it off, but by the time the funding it raised and the time is devoted to the project again, the quality of the product could very well be behind that of what will be eventually considered excellent.

Therefore, MORE development time would need to be allocated to once again bring it up to standard. Even if you get the programmers and artists to do it in their spare time, the factor here is time. The only thing worse than an organisation going broke is a defunct organisation trying to resurrect themselves by releasing old and irrelevant stock.
But if a dev studio buys the code and make it the studios top priority, it's a real possibility.

I wonder if we could get Big Finish Games to consider it??? :D

Duke Nuken turned into an adventure game... Now that would be funny :)
Perhaps he can team up with Tex?

Just because they're mostly known for Adventure Games, doesn't mean they aren't allowed to do other projects...

This is what Duke Nukem Forever would have looked like :(

Well Aaron did say that Big Finish do intend on making games in a number of genres. An FPS doesn't always have to be a repetitive dumbed down process of shoot, health, jump, duck, rinse repeat...just look at Deus Ex.

But, yes, DNF as an adventure game would be interesting lol

Here's the gameplay script for a point 'n' click adventure game...Duke Nukem style:

- look at the babe

- talk to the babe

- give money to the babe

- look at pigcop

- talk to pig cop

- use M16 on pig cop

- use mighty foot with door

It's like Leisure Suit Larry with a lust for combat!
Well it just goes to show that if you sit around with your thumb up your ass for long enough you're gonna eventually have to pull the plug and deal with the influx of $#it.

Just my $0.02

It's crappy to hear about Duke and 3D Realms. It was really looking like they'd finally release that damn game. I'm a way old school Duke fan, I mean the original 2D DOS Duke games so I was looking forward to it. Depending on how far they were to completion I can see someone purchasing the Duke property. There's too many fans out there to pass up on an almost completed game. There's potentially a lot of money to be made off that game. However if the game was below 50% complete I don't ever see it seeing the light of day.

[EDIT] I am confident someone will pirate it if it doesn't go to retail, if it isn't already.
3D REALMS IS STILL ALIVE!!!!!!
