This Has to Have Been Asked Before
I am SURE this has been asked before and I THINK I have a memory of someone asking about it, but why don't we all meet somewhere for a Tex Murphy Convention? I assume it would be a small venue so a hotel at a neutral location for everyone could be chosen. Has anyone ever figured out the logistics of this? Travel would likely be the only factor preventing everyone from coming, not to mention expense of renting out one of those conference rooms. Hmmm I think already I have my answer. Is it really that hard to set up an event for everyone to meet up? If we could figure out how, maybe we could convince Chris or Aaron to drop by for a Q and A session. Hmmm that would mean we would have to pay for their travel or go to where they are. Not to mention pay for their appearance. I'm answering these before others have a chance to read it. This can't be an impossible task, there has to be something we can do to pull this off. Can we sell cookies or something? If anyone has any wild yet plausible ideas let me know. There HAS to be something we can do along these lines. Lemme know if I am stupid for even thinking about this.
You're right, Stu. A couple years back we suggested a Tex convention and it generated a lot of interest. However, there were two rather large obstacles that needed then and now to overcome.
1. Since we are an international community the number of attendees would be kind of small. But, if we could figure a way to add a tie in by phone (expensive?) or via the internet so everyone could log on live, wow!, that would truly be awesome!
2. At the time Aaron and Chris were deeply involved in other projects and felt the time was NOT ripe for a group meeting. Do they feel that way now? Don't know.
At any rate, it would be a memorable experience if we could get a group together and meet with those guys. It would probably be in their best interests to have the meeting near their home town so as not to be a burden for them and their families.

We've got Cub and Fred coming to the States next year, if a couple others could make a trip as well around the same time we could meet in Utah, I'm sure Chris and Aaron could stop by if we're close enough...

Would it be worth it to just meet one another even if Chris and Aaron didn't show up? I'm sure we could arrange something interesting to do, even if we just all met and got blasted. Maybe someone more creative can come up with something other than getting smashed.
If Chris and Aaron WERE to show up, what about doing a Skype (or something like it) video-cast for those who are unable to attend to watch? I know I have video gear to cover that and I believe we have a way of broadcasting it for all to see.
So basically a small scale meeting and a large scale meeting. Are either viable?

Absolutely... I think, depending on our number turn out, that Aaron or Chris {or both} would make it a priority to attend to meet such die hard fans... Of course I don't know what their minimum number would be, but I think if we got to a sizable crowd at least one of them would make an appearance for us, given the location isn't too far out of their way, which is why I suggested having it relatively close to them...Electron Stu wrote:Would it be worth it to just meet one another even if Chris and Aaron didn't show up?
But given the proper time allowance and whatnot I think it would be worth it to try and have a get together... Maybe a decent tourist location... I mean we won't be spending every waking moment together, so during that time we're not together I wouldn't mind seeing some sites or something...
Am I right to assume this is being done here in the States or are we thinking of a different locale??? What are some sites here in the US some might want to see while having this get together???
While I like Plumgas's idea of an Australian trip, I must say it isn't in my cards for another few years yet...

Nothing is really being planned here, think of this more of a feasibility study. I am assuming the states would be the best as that is where the bulk of the members are. There could be more overall in the rest of the world but not as collected as in the states. Even if it's in the states I still see it being hard for people to travel. Everyone will have to spend money on the travel itself and not to mention the event depending on the elabourateness of it. I know that's not a word but I am using it anyway.
I wonder if we should start the online equivalent of a change jar. Whenever someone has some extra change throw it into the pot. Eventually it would grow enough to pay for the event itself. However the downside to this is that I don't think it'd be in the immediate future. Not to mention it could be a hassle to whoever is in charge of it, and it may be a hassle to make the donations for it.

[EDIT] What's an SLC?
That's why I've been suggesting that hot spot... There are some good sites to see while we're there as well... Scenery anyway... Aren't the Salt Flats near there??? I've been wanting to see the Salt Flats...Jen wrote:I'll pony up a few hotel rooms, a rental van and a small conference area with pizza. I still think SLC is best. Easy for the guys to stop by for a few, say hi, and then they can go back to work, life etc.
This topic comes up every couple of years. Few commit though.
I like to drive, so I'd be willing to pick anyone up between here and there... Small detours would be acceptable... I have an SUV that normally seats 8, but pile in luggage, I can probably fit 4 or 5 comfortably... Not sure if I would bring any of the family or not... Since this is in the distant future I have time to figure that out...

Actually it is a word, you just misspelled it...
Never doubt your vocab, sometimes words pop in there we didn't think we knew, but turns out we do...
