Overseer DVD and Windows XP SP3?

When I first got my newest PC about 3 years ago (P4 3.2Ghz, 2G RAM, 256MGeForce 6800, 300G HD), I was able to get Overseer's DVD version to work with little difficulty by installing in 98 Compatibility mode. I know it worked because i used to drive my wife crazy re-playing the ending sequence over and over and over.

I recently watched "The Maltese Falcon" for the first time a couple weeks ago, and it made me want to break out all of my Tex Murphy games for the first time in well over a year. Gordon Fitzpatrick even mentions Sam Spade at the beginning of Pandora!

I was crushed when I fired up Overseer and it didn't work! If I tried to start at the beginning, it GPFed bringing up Tex's office, and if I started from my saved game, I was able to go get Gideon's hair and put it on the DNA scanner, but it GPFed a few seconds into the sequence where Tex tries to shut down Overlord.

The only thing I can think of in the last 3 years that would explain it is that I now have SP3 installed.

Anyone else have the same problem?

And while we're on the subject, has anyone gotten the GOG version of Overseer to work in Windows XP with SP3?
it's the cd version only

Understood. The second question was intended to be a somewhat separate question.

I could have worded it thusly:

1. Does anyone have the GOG version of the game running under XP SP3?
2. Does anyone have the retail CD version running under XP SP3?
I just noticed a thread I overlooked. Looks like other people are having better luck than I am:

EDITED to say that with a little bit of effort (like actually scrolling down the page) I found quite a few threads with my same problem. I googled mpgpl135.zip and found it on someone's FTP site. After installing it (using W95 compatibility) my installation ran much, much better. I'm still having the occasional lockup and crash, but for the most part I'm able to play the game - yay!

I did go ahead and buy the GOG version. Now that I have my DVD version running reasonably well I may or may not actually play it, but at least I know I supported whatever Project Fedora is :).
