I can't see the logic

Well, most of the puzzles in the Tex Murphy games have some logic, but there is one I can only pass by trial and error. It is in Overseer in one of the cell blocks. You have to use a broken panel to open one cell, and in the panel you can read:
e + o =2
o - e = 8
Does it have any sense? I certenly don't get it.

Hmmm, I can't remember that one and it's puzzling me now....

It's been so long since I've played Overseer... Go take a look at Nilo's site, he has the puzzles and solutions for all the puzzles in all of the games... Has little captions under than as well if I'm not mistaken, giving a small explanation for the puzzle...
Otherwise I'm not going to be able to help you until I've played the game again...

Algebra 101
o = 5
e = -3
Here is how I came up with answer.
Its algebra.
first... isolate one of the variables for both equations... in this case, e.
remember the golden rule of algebra, whatever you do to the left side
you do to the right so that they equal out.
part 1:
e+o = 2 o-e = 8
e = 2 - o -e = 8 - o
-1(-e) = -1(8 - o)
e = o - 8
Part 2:
Now that we have e isolated... we can substitute e with the equations
therefore
2 - o = o - 8 both sides = e
Part 3:
Now we isolate o
2 - o = o - 8
2 - o + o = o + o - 8
2 + 8 = o + o So o = 5
10 = 2 o
10/2 = 2 o / 2
5 = o
or o = 5
Part 4.
now we have o.... but we have to find out what e is as a number
e + o = 2
e + 5 = 2
e = 2 - 5
e = -3
Last Part.... now we test to see if it works
e + o = 2
-3 + 5 = 2 They equal so that one is good
2 = 2
Test the other equation too.
o - e = 8
5 - (-3) = 8 And there you have it.
8 = 8
Hope this helped. Tried to make it as simple as possible.

Dude I could have given him the answer, he is trying to figure out the logic behind the puzzle... lol
Not a 7th Grade Math Class Lecture...
Okay I see it now... I went and looked at Nilo's site like I suggested above...
E + O = 2
O - E = 8
Now You've got 1 - 10 on the left panel... Okay, so start off with putting the Slider on 2... Didn't work... Put the Slider on 8... Didn't work... Okay, subtract 2 from 8, lets put the Slider on 6... Didn't work... Okay lets ADD them, put the Slider on 10... It Worked, you can now enter Cell 7...
It's just a Simple, Logical, Math problem...

I don't see the logic.
how is it logical to add 2 and 8?
I didn't remember the puzzle at all. It's been a while.

Sadly, it's not the only puzzle in the game that drives me crazy.
Looks like Chris and Aaron were a little too inspired by Myst.
These kind of puzzles have been really derailing the game for me (I'm currently playing Overseer for the first time).
If I remember correctly, this was one of the main reasons that the game got relatively mediocre reviews at the time of its release.
Pandora had plenty of them, but they were just better and added entertainment. Too much trial and error in the Overseer ones.

It's not necessarily logical to add 2 and 8, all I'm saying is that any math problem is Logical, provided there is a solution... And this is nothing but a math problem...
I agree, I can see where there might be frustration and all... And I also agree with Tuco, there are a lot of Frustrating puzzling in Overseer... I think Overseer was thrown together more Hastily than Pandora was... Which resulted in more bugs and lower end puzzles...

Thanks for the answers, I see it is easier to simply try every move.

Sometimes that's the only way to go even though it doesn't seem very Logical...
