If you're looking for a Tex Murphy-like fix...
...and you haven't played Access Software's "Amazon: Guardians of Eden", I'd recommend it.
It was produced by Chris Jones, with Aaron Conners doing the online hint system, and plays almost exactly like Martian Memorandum. In fact if you close your eyes and listen, you'll swear that MIDI music coming at you is from a Tex game.
There's a pretty good cinematic opening sequence followed by a scene that looks like Tex in his office at the beginning of MM. You select icons from the bottom of the screen, i.e. look, talk, operate, pick up, use item from backpack etc. The hint system, unlike in MM, operates on only one object at a time, so if the reason you're stuck is you can't figure out which pixel to click on you'll need a walkthrough.
The ratio of stuff you can click on that has nothing to do with the game vs. what is actually important is more reminiscent of UAKM and PD than MM
.
My main "criticisms" of the first 10 minutes is that there does seem to be an awful lot of "fluff" so it takes awhile to get your teeth into the game, and also, the walking algorithm is a bit miffing. At the beginning it's not entirely obvious where you should walk JUST TO ENTER THE $(*@#(*$ BUILDING. Also, if you're trying to walk through a door but your character is 4 pixels too high, clicking 4 pixels underneath him seldom works! This can get annoying but it's passable.
But, though I'm only about 10 minutes into it as I type this, it seems a perfectly playable game.
Anyone else who's played this want to comment? And again I'm just getting into it so please try to avoid spoilers
.
Thanks
