windows 7

well it's out now, anyone purchased it yet. I'm running rc at the moment not sure If I will buy it now & upgrade vista or just keep on using rc till next year.

a few choices here, OEM, upgrade, retail full licence.
upgrade will only upgrade from vista home premium to the same version in Win 7.
From xp will only do a custom install, renames old windows. You can access the folder to copy out of it only.

On a upgrade version if you have to install it again you have to have a validated licence copy on the hard drive for it to install. So you will need to image your validated copy of vista so you can reload your image. it won't allow you just to have the disk & enter the licence for the upgrade.

I think the best choice is OEM copy or retail version which is more expensive.
you can upgrade over win 7 RC but if you ever have to reinstall you have to reinstall win 7 rc before the upgrade & it's has to validated should this could be a problem down the track.

You can buy a new hard drive & oem win 7 which seems to be the cheapest option.

I have been running all my games to see what ones's I have problems with, so far the only problem I have found that a couple of games will not run with nvidea driver in the 90's but works fine up to 86 but I think that will happen also on vista.

I'm just gonna wait until I go through with the Computer Room and Computer Upgrades before I bother with Windows 7...

So it's out of Beta now and it runs good???

well there was beta & then RC, now it's out in the shop's 22nd october.

I have been using since June I think. Work's very well. I have a dual boot with xp/vista/win 7
I have been playing my games & I don't think there really is a need to keep xp.

I have been mainly using win 7 on internet, tested all printers & other devices & they all worked fine. Best improvement on win 7 is starting pc & network starts almost the same time as the pc boots in windows. With vista my adsl modem takes 5-8mins to start internet connection, but with win 7 it only takes a few seconds.

Some programs I haven't run in win 7, only to the fact that I know the RC will only work till for a few months next year & I will have to install them again.

They have put out a family pack for 3 pc's but it hasn't been released in AU only the states.

A lot of my friends have been playing around with the RTM version, and they say it's the best thing since sliced bread. I am definitely going to upgrade to Windows 7, but I am having a tough time deciding whether or not to completely get rid of both my XP and Vista partitions and put in a fresh Windows 7, or just upgrade my Vista partition to Windows 7. I was swaying more towards the latter becuase while I understand that Windows 7 has XP virtualisation, there are still some things I am not comfortable with: i.e. does XP mode in Windows 7 support full hardware ASIO drivers? If so then I can use my music software, but if not I am pretty much screwed.

well with the xp mode you need virtualisation hardware, shows in the bios whether your processor is capable. Also not all versions have it, only from professional & up.

Yep, so that ruled out the upgrade option, because having Home Premium of Vista means I can only upgrade to Home Premium of Windows 7, which does not have the virtualisation. My hardware supports it though.

I think by the time I am ready to shell out full price for 7 Ultimate I will be ready for a full fresh install... but not before I thoroughly investigate how well my music software works in XP mode.

have a check on line, there is a lot conflicting info as no-body really knew what microsoft is actually doing this time around.

I have read the OEM licenced on the installed pc & there will be on line checking every now & again to see it matches your hardware. Retail versions are for any pc you are using, that's way it costs more.

Ultimate $416 upgrade 368.00 OEM $270
professional $405.90 upgrade $350 OEM $213
home premium $291.50 $198 upgrade OEM $162

not cheap, on line there are deals $361 oem ultimate with 1TB hard drive

Yep im geting windows 7 for my acer 18.4 inch laptop im intitled to a free upgrade since i bought mine within a specified time so i onlypay shiping and handling and get a free upgrade to windows 7.

there are some rules though

first of all i must have bought mine between 22.6.2009 and 1.1.2010
and i can only upgrade to the version i got instaled so if i got vista pro home or ultimate ill get same version of windows 7
Last i cant change language so if i have Dutch i must get a dutch upgrade

still a prety sweet and cheep deal i think.
Live is too short to waste it make sure its with the one u love !

I,m a bit pissed off as I purchased 2 new My toshiba notebooks early june, thought I would jump in before the end of financial year. I was aware at the time about win 7 but I couldn't wait.

But then I heard If I had left towards the end of june I would of qualified for 2 free upgrades.

Anyway I have Technet subription with microsoft so i can down load any version as part of my subcription.

download win 7 upgrade advisor & that will tell you what drivers & programs will not work under win 7, also I have read you do a upgrade from home premium to ultimate

It all sounds pretty positive. I assume it's miles better than Vista, which I have hardly heard any good reviews about, but is it better than XP?

I wonder whether it's worth putting on if XP does a pretty good job with things already.
David
well if you are using xp you will notice a huge difference, I should image it won't be long before microsoft stop supporting xp like they did with 98

I tried to watch that Ad on the Mac here at work, but then I remembered the entire system got whiped because of that bug in Snow Leopard that Apple have yet to patch. Then I could not launch the browser becuase of a virus in the system that made the computer come up with hundreds of pop up windows that eventually crash it (despite the fact that Macs supposedly don't get viruses or crash). Upon reboot I was told (by the launch recovery screen) I needed to take it into the Apple store to fix. They quoted me in excess of $380 to fix despite being under warranty becuase any virus related conflicts are considered "user at fault" and hence not Apple's responsibility... becuase remember Apple does not get viruses, so any that you DO get are apparently becuase the user put it there deliberately.

I'd like to say I made that all up, but it's all true.

My point... while the ads are great (I really like them and they are funny), they are, as you said, just one side of the story.

cub,

I did a win 7 upgrade from home premium vista to ultimate, upgrade went through with no problems. You do need the service pack 2 first.

You are also able to upgrade windows 7 rc to a licenced version by doing a upgrade
you copy the dvd on the hard drive first & you change the version number first & then it upgrades, saves having to install again.

You can also buy upgrade version & do a fresh install which involves installing once as custom & then again as upgrade. The trick is not to enter licence key until second install

Thanks for the tips and advice, sounds like its a smooth process which is great.

I am probably still going to hold off. My business is starting to pick up and within the next few weeks I am going to outlay a full software and hardware budget and get everything I need in one hit for the upgrade so that I can get cracking with the more serious projects.

This includes a full system format and installation Windows 7 and all new copies of the latest software (CS4 master suite, new Cubase audio system hardware and software, sample libraries etc, 3Ds Max 2010, and others). Will probably be around $20,000 all up... but well worth it once the whole system is primed and ready to rock!
