My new rig to be...
With the new WIndows 7, i'm thinking now is probably a good time to shake off the old PC cobwebs by updating my computer.
Here's what I have in mind:
CPU: Core i7 2.66GHZ [920 model] OR Core i7 3.00GHZ [950 model] - this is the only thing I am undecided on
Motherboard - Gigabyte EX58 UD3R.
Video - GeForce GTX 295
RAM - 4Gb Kit DDR3 @2000 X 2 (therefore coming to 8GB)
Storage - Western Digital SATA 1.00TB (Caviar) X 2.
Operating System - Windows 7 OEM Professional (64bit)
Virus Software - Norton
Office Suite - Microsoft Office for Student.
Optical - Blu-Ray Sata Combo Pioneer
Internet - ADSL2
I'm looking at having the change over done within the next 2-3 weeks. I can't wait

good move on the sata dvd, being pioneer & sata that way you don't have to have those space wasting ide cables. I recently upgraded mine & I was tempted to put in a sata dvdrw but due to no stock available a couple of months ago I had to settle with the round ide cables.

The Caviar's are pretty quick. Then again the new Velociraptor drives from WD are just insanely quick. All depends on how much you want to spend.marinedalek wrote:Looking good! Though I'd be tempted to get a smaller fast drive for the OS and applications like a WD 10kRPM disk. Other than that, *drool*!
For example, if you have a little bit extra $$$ to spend hen investing in a higher capacity solid state drive for just your OS and software installations (128GB or 250GB) will give you a HUGE speed boost in Windows and software loading times. So essentially you would have one SSD for your software, and a 1tb Caviar for everything else.
But I still would def recommend 12 GB of RAM... that way you can make use of the triple-channel memory architecture. Simply get a 12GB kit (3x 4GB) and put them into the 3 white slots, leaving the single blue slot blank. Running 4x 2GB will be nowhere near as fast.

I was actually thinking about the RAM there and thought 12GB might be going over the top. But now that i've heard you actually recommend it, i'm going to do it because it's only an extra $145. When compared to the budget for this system, it's pocket change but a whole 'lotta power thrown in. I'm going to do it.
