Fallout!

Being a completist, I can't play sequels (that share the same story, I'm looking at you, COD) without having played the previous games on a franchise, one notable exception was Tex Murphy, as I started with UAKM, but I didn't know there were others before and there was no internetz at that time.
So it's time I play Fallout 3 on my ps3, having finished the other games I had lined up. That bug behind my ear telling me "franchise... franchise..." made me go out and seek Fallout 1 and 2, however, and so I bought Fallout 1 ($5.99 at GOG, it was $9.99 at steam, GOG has another advantage that the game comes standalone).
I never played this game, whose Lead Programmers include our very much beloved Tex Murphy aka Chris Jones, but I've seen it listed in several "Top # games of x platform/genre/era/null". Has anyone played it here? What do you think of it?
Should I really concern myself with Fallout 2 after it, or should I go straight to Fallout 3?

I for one love the old Fallout games. That said, it's just FO 1 & 2 I really enjoy, the others were... well, one wasn't quite good and the other was a piece of crap. And that's my objective view of them!
I don't believe it's the same Chris Jones, however.

I've barely played Fallout 3, but my take on it is that its story has no connection to that of Fallout 1 & 2. If you want to play them, I think you'll enjoy them, but I don't think they're necessary.
If you choose to venture further into the wasteland after 1 & 2, you definitely want to avoid Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel, quite possibly the most immature and vulgar thing I've ever seen or played. It's got the Fallout name and characters from Fallout 1 in it, but the heart of Fallout is nowhere to be found within. However, a similarly titled game, Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel, isn't bad at all, but it is difficult like nobody's business, and the story is considerably more linear that Fallout 1 & 2.

You can pick up Fallout 3 and play without having played Fallout 1 or 2. It has been one of my favorite PS3 games. I just got the DLC a little bit ago and am almost through it.
That being said, I think Fallout 1 & 2 were great games. In fact, I got them working on XP and started Fallout 1 over again. The turn-based game play seems slow compared to newer games, but it's still fun. And, the nostalgia is great.

Oh yeah, I completely forgot to mention that - Fallout 3 is just a Fallout sequel in that it follows the same setting. It has absolutely nothing to do with FO 1 and 2 beyond the same backstory of how the world died.

Wait a minute.
Chris "Tex Murphy" Jones was one of the lead programmers for Fallout 1 and 2?
He's listed in mobygames.com, but I think it's a different Chris Jones.

I didn't consider the possibility of another Chris Jones, lead programmer of good games, walking this earth, but that may very well be the case as you guys point out...

I think you guys have got it confused with Chris Taylor.
CJ never worked for Interplay. He was a co-founder of Access Software so no he didn't work on Fallout.

The thing is that he is credited as "Chris Jones" at the intro...
