PAX East 2010
Is anyone here planning to attend PAX East 2010 in Boston at the end of March? For those of you thinking "What???", PAX stands for Penny Arcade Expo, and it is a gaming expo that has been held for many years in Washington state but is being held for the first time this year on my side of the US. It is quite big - 50,000 attendees expected - and attempts to encompass many, many forms of gaming. Interactive Fiction, with which I'm somewhat involved (and which for the most part is not done commercially), will be represented there, and it's the first time since the demise of the commercial text adventure industry in the early '90's that IF will have such a public place of honor. I'm guessing Aaron and Chris might be there, though it's a cross-country trip for them, and I have to believe Jane Jensen will be there plugging her 2010 release Gray Matter.

As a bunch of people have looked at my post on PAX East 2010 but no one has replied, I thought it might help - though not necessarily generate any replies - if I showed you all Wikipedia's summary of PAX. One of the most interesting things about it is that it is not limited to computer games but also includes a very popular kind of role-playing game called "tabletop games." Incidentally, last year's keynote speaker was Ron Gilbert of Monkey Island fame.

From Wikipedia:
The Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) is an annual gamer festival held in Washington state, USA. PAX was created by Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik, the authors of the Penny Arcade webcomic, because they wanted to attend a show that gave equal attention to console gamers, computer gamers, and tabletop gamers.
Created in 2004, PAX has nearly doubled in size each successive year and has been hailed as a weekend-long celebration of gamer culture. Defining characteristics include an insider keynote speech, game-inspired concerts, panels on game industry topics, exhibitor booths, after-hours parties, tournaments, and freeplay areas.
Jerry Holkins has said that "PAX and Child's Play will outlive Penny Arcade. Substantially."[1]
After many years of success with PAX West, 2010 will bring the first PAX East Coast, in Boston, MA, with preregistrations for tickets indicating that it may be bigger than any other previous PAX conventions held in past years.

Well looking at their home page, PAX Home Page, since there aren't any 3-day passes available, it would be a waste of a lot of people's time and money to go through booking a flight and hotel room just to get access for one of the three days...
It's also a shame that these things are only held once a year in isolated places like this... They should be kind of like a tour thing circulating around the country a new one every couple of months and have like 6 a year...

Is it penny arcades as in real old fashioned one penny coins?
I went to a funfair here many years ago where one of the stalls was full of different penny arcade slot machines. A friend and I started with ten 1p coins (which we bought for a couple of quid) and while mine lasted all of two minutes, my friend's ones lasted about half an hour.

No, that's just the name of the company. They started out as a webcomic (they're still the most popular one on the web.)
The name derives from the creators thinking it up as something that symbolizes both gaming and cheap thrills.

Pirates, vampires, zombies, ninjas, ghouls, aliens, goblins, monsters, robots, sorcerers, undead, werewolves, demons, mutated dinosaur-cyborgs and those pesky phone salesmen! The shotgun is a one-size-fits-all solution!
Rotten luck, bafitis. They've been selling the three-day passes (just $50) for some months, and for weeks now they've been saying it was a certainty they'd be sold out long before the event. You were just a few days too late, as that sold out posting is dated 2/3.

Yeah I noticed...
I was all set to go to the Gamers Convention that was going to be in Atlantic City... I had already purchased the Weekend Pass and was already setup in a Condo just down the street from the hotel it was being held at, but that one got Canceled... Chris Jones agreed to go to that one too, it would have been a great pleasure to have met him...
