Just Cause 2

It's one of those sandbox style games that're out now. And... It's got a really fun set of gameplay mechanics.

However. And this is one of those big howevers.

The voice actors. SUCK!

I'm talking sucking a golfball through a garden hose! I'm talking sucking the chrome off a trailer hitch! And every other gruesome description gleaned from Full Metal Jacket!

It's terrible! Horrible! It's so GODAWFUL you almost need to listen to it just to find out just how impossibly bad it actually is!

I'm amazed that the voice actors don't understand how bad it is! I'm even more amazed that the voice directors don't get how inane it is! I'm shocked that the company executives listened to this and thought "Hey, that's good stuff! Let's roll!"

Considering the backers, they could've afforded at least ONE decent voice actor.

And trust me it would've been a better game if they only had one. And he or she did ALL the voices.

Here. Be aware you might suffer bleeding of the ears and cranial implosion, however.

Don't say I didn't warn you!

So Fred, what you are saying is that instead of recommending us a good game to play you are recommending us to watch something that will probably torture is? Hardly a nice thing for a friend to do.

Once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny.
I haven't even listed to any part of the story of that game.

Just cause 2 is an amazing game, the story IMO is totally not needed as it makes very little sense, has little character development, footage is in fact reused often and it really breaks up the gameplay too much (the only time the game ever loads is during story scenes.)

The game does a great job at forcing us into the sandbox gameplay to enjoy it, essentially in order to progress in the game you NEED to go on a rampage, and even better the game is basically anything goes.

The game does everything GTA does and IMO does it better, the grappling hook being an epic addition that takes what made GTA tedious and dull and instead makes it quick, easy and efficent (such as breaking into a car).

The game world is simply amazing to look at, the dynamic clouds are the best ever attempted in a video game before they look so real and react to weather (rain and snow) as well as day night cylces and storms and also wind. The game really does show you the awesome power of DX10 and its sort of strange that not many games have utilized these features as much as this game.

It feels very well optimized too with me getting 60frames on max everything on my GTX295.

The best thing Square Enix and Eidos could do for this game is release an SDK on the PC version because there's some annoyances that I'd love to fix in the game (specifically the really close draw distance and LODs which sort of destroy the illusion a bit).

And there is just too much to do in this game, so many vehicles, so much to see and discover.
Definately check this one out you won't regret it.

that's good... I really need to upgrade my card. Recently downloaded the new Cinematic Mod for the Half Life 2 series which adds an additional 25GB worth of up-res'ed content to the game, and it has brought my 8800 GTS 512 to its knees. Once so proud... *sigh*. hopefully the relese of the 480s will bring down the price of the earlier models, caus one thing is for sure: I am not going to waste my money on nVidia's latest offerings!

I think its probably best to wait out a while. The GTX 295 was a great card, its done a lot of work for me over the past year that I've had it and I was expecting to have replaced it by now, but I'm glad its still going strong- That said they are expensive bastards of a card :D and the drivers can be a bit flimsy at times (sometimes for no good reason my GPU will overheat and CTD the game I was playing- rarely happens, but when it does you totally rage!)

I did have some overheating occur during Just Cause but one thing that was causing this was the GPU Water feature, my advice.. turn it off.. it doesn't make the game any better and I can't notice the difference aside from that my frame rate is more constant with it off. Everything else though is fine. (I have DOF and blurring turned off not because of the hardware but because I think those effects are just stupid.. why do I need the computer to do something my eyes do anyway?! and the game has such high resolutions that blurring it seems like a waste to me.)

If you don't want to upgrade your graphics then consider the console version, it might not be as good (mainly because its a shooter, and traditionally shooters play better on PC) but at least you'll save a couple of hundred bucks in the process.
I have decided to go with a Radeon HD 5870 this time around. The GTX 295 is not available anymore, and eve nif I could find one the prices are still rediculous. Also, waiting for the 5970 or the GTX 480 would not suite me as it will be way above my budget. So it was a toos up between the GTX 285 or the HD 5870 and I went of the latter as it is the better performance wise, and supports DX 11. The only thing I will miss with going back to ATI/AMD is the neat Ambient Occulsion feature in the latest Geforce cards, which was a really nice addition for image quality, but not worth the performance drop in more modern titles.

So with any luck I will be back in the game(s) once I get this upgrade... my 8800 GTS 512 has a lot of overheating problems too, so it's time it retired.

I've noticed everyone who talks about the game is all up in airs about it, everybody's giving it praise like it's the second coming. I thought I'd point out the one major achilles-heel like flaw in it's design.

Also, I'm offering a price on that woman's head. If her head cannot be acquired, her job as a voice actor for all eternity will suffice.

Beyond that, the game truly is a lot of fun. It's like a good combination of GTA and Batman: Arkham Asylum.

Can somebody please tell the female protagonist that her imitation of Bill Cosby sucks....
