Just curious . . .

What's the longest any of you folks have stuck with a game before completing it?

Anybody out there still struggling with a game (purposefully avoiding walkthroughs) for years?

Ever heard of one called "The President is Missing?" I bought this game as a little kid twenty years ago and have been playing it every since. The only way to beat the game is to send in your findings to the game company (Cosmi--who now make financial software) and wait for a reply telling you if you were right. Knowing all this, I continue to play. I feel like the guy in Memento. How sad is that?

I Always avoid Walkthroughs unless the game has gotten to a point where it is no longer fun... But I'll only use the walkthrough to get through that spot...

As for struggling with a game, StoneKeep, came out in the 90s and I still haven't completed it yet... I just bought it from GOG yesterday and I will be playing it in just a short time, hopefully...

So put that to about 15 years and still going... That's a long time to wait to finish a game... lol

Hmm I'd have to say I never spent more than a month on a game. I used to play a lot games in school so I'd play a little, do my homework, and play some more.

If I got stuck after a couple days, I'd break down and look for hints. If I really got stuck, I'd just give up on the game. Once a game stops being fun and becomes annoying, I get angry at a it.

Over the years with the internet and less time to play games, i have less patience for being stuck. I mean it depends on the game, but i am always close to checking for a walkthrough or a hint. Hell i use full walkthroughs for most RPGs just because i always end up hitting a wall halfway through them when i play on my own, and then i feel my time is wasted.

I must admit that I tend to look for walkthroughs as soon as I hit a point in the game where I think, I've exhausted the options I have. That being said I may be less patient than I used to be because some of the solutions to the "problems" I have with games today seem pretty straight forward once I read it. I guess I'm just more anxious to get further into the game and the story now that I turn to hints in order to do so.

However, I try not to follow a walkthrough completely - only time I do that is if I want to play a game, I've already beaten before and just want to experience the story again.

I actually spent a good 2 months on Deus Ex by experimenting with all of the various alternative approaches and endings without regretting 1 minute of it :)

I started playing this series of games starring Tex Murphy during the mid-nineties, and it hasn't ended yet. Still awaiting the glorious return and an end to that story.

PS: Sorry, but it was kinda mandatory to bring it up

Fred,
I did a have a weak moment playing Overseer. When we got to the part where we had to search Big Jim Slade's hotel room, I had the hardest time getting out of there alive. I have to admit I gave up on the game for a week because it was getting sick and tired of getting shot over and over again. It was like Groundhog Day.

I had to tell myself that I had to go back. I kept debating with myself. I know Tex will win. Do I really need to face Big Jim again? I finally caved and came back to finally defeat Jim but man they really made me work for it in that last game. I felt better when we saw that kiss at the end. It seemed all worth it and then the cruelty of what followed was horrible.

Probably the longest I have spent playing through a game would be Oblivion... which I racked up over 150 hours of gameplay on. That's the equivalent for a few months with casual gaming (3 hours or so for about 4-5 days a week).

But in terms of the longest from start to finish, regardless of time spent, would have been Riven... that took me 1.5 years to finish without hints.
