Heavy Rain (The spoiler thread)
Hello all!
A week or two ago I finally found time to finish Heavy Rain, and I've kinda been aching to talk about it ever since. So I thought I'd start up a thread that MAY include spoilers to the game, so you all know what to expect, if you should stumple across this thread.
So what do you guys think of the game? Surprises story-wise? Did you finish with all 4 main characters? Were there certain scenes that were particularly difficult to get through?
Although the game specifies that every action has its consequences I did try to stay positive and do the right thing all the way through the game. And I did finish with all 4 characters. Next thing to do is to replay some scenes and hopefully try to change the direction of the story a little bit
PS.: This concludes my 300th post on this board. I know it's not much compared to many of you, but it still quite a few

Jim, you can take my word for it - it's a very decent game. It's a PS3 exclusive, however.
Netroam - I've got the platinum achievement for the game
Only game I ever bothered to do that with!

Pirates, vampires, zombies, ninjas, ghouls, aliens, goblins, monsters, robots, sorcerers, undead, werewolves, demons, mutated dinosaur-cyborgs and those pesky phone salesmen! The shotgun is a one-size-fits-all solution!
I ended the game with 3 out of the 4 characters alive, and Shaun saved. I was pretty happy with the ending. I was kind of annoyed who ended up being the Origami Killer, but the more i think on it, it was an interesting choice, and the only thing that really makes it annoying are some red herrings.
I'm purposely being vague but am willing to disclose more ^^

Fred: Have you played it so much that you've achieved every bonus and trophy there is? I must admit that I haven't gotten that far yet - there are some scenes where I, of course, have to do differently than the first play-through in order to get more trophies, but I just haven't had time to do that yet.
Jim: The game is very well done and it kept me interested all the way, so yes - I'll definitely recommend it. But as Fred said - it's a PS3 exclusive, so if you haven't got a PS3 it may be a bit too much to buy the console just for that one game.
Atomicvegetable: Which character died in your game? I must admit - I was also a bit surprised to see who the Origami Killer was - especially since the killer also could have died earlier in the game should I fail a scene. But that's what's interesting - I guess I'll have to try and see what happens if I fail some scenes

I really looked forward to this game coming out, got it on the release date and immediately started playing it.
I have very mixed feelings about this game. On the one hand, it is definitely my kind of game. The story is great. It has well developed characters and not a lot of fast action and shooting. On the other hand, I think that the actual gameplay is absolutely terrible.
I have gotten through most of the endings. At the warehouse with just Ethan, just Madison, just Norman, just Ethan and Madison, just Ethan and Norman, and finally with all the characters Ethan, Norman and Madison (and Shelby, of course.) I've had ending variations where Madison, or Norman, or Ethan gets killed, and another where Madison, Ethan and Norman all survive and only Shelby gets killed.
However, I absolutely detest the controls and camera for this game. I dreaded each replay that I had to do to get alternate endings because the game play is so tedious.
I think the designers thought that having to hit different controls for every tedious little action would make the game more emersive and feel more realistic. It has exactly the opposite effect.
If I want to perform some simple action like turning a door knob or take something from my pocket, or block a punch, I don't have to consciously think about how I'm going to move my arm and fingers and keep my balance, and every other little action. In real life, these actions are automatic. In this game, they are not. Because of that, it is always reminding you that this is not real real and you are in a game because you have to keep watching for the x,,circle, square, triangle and left and right stick. I absolutely hate this about the game. I'm done. I will never get all the endings or Platinum for this game because, as much as I like the game, I dislike playing it so much I will never play it again.
I'm sorry to be so down on this game. I really wanted to like it and I put a lot of time and effort into it. But I really, really don't like the game play.

I would recommend Uncharted 2 over Heavy Rain a thousand times over. Uncharted is a delight to play. Also, the characters and the acting are much better than in in Heavy Rain. I found the Heavy Rain acting and character movements to be very wooden, while the Uncharted characters feel much more alive.
All trophies are accounted for, indeed.
So, this being a spoilerific thread, I assume people who haven't played it yet are staying clear. So here's a few spoilers:
First off - Scott Shelby, the private investigator is the Origami Killer. And not really a P. I. at all.
There, that's said. The elephant is out of the room. Here's a few of my criticisms of the game. By no means should you believe I dislike it, I still love the game, but I do have som issues with the story and the way it's told. So!
Second - There's a major plothole in that for some reason, Ethan Mars keeps having blackouts and waking up with an origami figure in his hands. This stops mid-game, and is never explained at all. What the hell?
Third - Madison's opening scene involves a nightmare which gets no explanation and has no consequence for the remaining gameplay or story. With the exception that it's a rather weak plot device to make her go stay at the same motel Ethan does. This annoys me. It's poor storytelling.
Fourth - Scott Shelby owns an abandoned old warehouse. He's an ex-cop! He doesn't have that kind of cashflow! Why would you buy an old warehouse? "Oh, maybe I'll start killing kids, gee, I really should get an evil lair...!" Again, poor plot device backed by absolutely no storytelling.
Speaking of poor story telling:
Fifth - After Madison escapes from Shelby's apartment, having found out who he's the killer, she has to decide if she's to phone up Ethan or Jayden. At WHAT point in this game... AT ALL... does Madison EVER meet Jayden? Much less have a conversation with her? How'd she get his number? What the hell, man? Way to break the suspension of disbelief!
But other than that? I loved the way you're going from family man to broken-down nervous wreck with a kidnapped son and a serial killer who's playing goddamn mindgames with you. My favorite scene was the first trial - when Ethan has to drive against traffic for five miles in less than five minutes.
Also, the pacing of the game is pretty damn good. It lulls you in with sweet family life and easy-going stuff and then it ups the ante and steps on the throttle and suddenly you're thrown into a dark noir world of serial killers and private investigators and sexy journalists.
I mean. I freely admit I didn't catch most of these flaws I've mentioned until I replayed the game. With the exception of #5 - When Madison magically and suddenly knew who Jayden was and also had his number. I get the feeling something was cut from the game.
Alright? Spoilers enough for ya? Go discuss!

Also, Doc? It was a bunch of american and british actors directed by a french guy with poor communication skills across the language barrier. Considering that, they didn't muck it up too badly, actually.
Still, it's no excuse.

Also, note that Scott Shelby's asthma seems to be an issue at the beginning, it's then mentioned, and then gone.
How Norman finds the killer is a bit thin; two gas station receipts and a geoprofile. Only one cop lives in this geo profile...he must be the killer! No other person would own a gold watch in this town!
And as for the cop owning an abandoned warehouse, that's not it. He's also got the apartment, the scary room with the cameras and bottle of poison...he's got a lot of resources. And I'm almost forgetting the car in the garage, the locker in the city; for every father is there a car?
The game's got it's holes, but as the story progressed I ended up getting caught up with the mystery of who the killer was. It's also less of a game and more of a lengthy cinematic, but I still enjoyed it.

Net: Shelby died in my game. My ending had Ethan and Madison there at the ending, and they finally defeat Shelby. I gave up with Norman after sifting through the evidence in his office for close to 20 minutes.
Fred: Ethan's blackouts were the thing that annoyed me the most. It could have even been explained when Blake and Norman are at the psychiatrist as some part of Ethan could feel responsible for the death of these kids like he does for Jason, and that could have led Blake to believe Ethan was the killer.
It's little things like this that could have tightened up the story. Like being a journalist, it's easy to imagine that Madison would have the contact info of the FBI agent in charge of the case, but a small scene with her trying to gain access to him or something like that would have made it all fit.
Paul: Ugh i know what you mean, i was fighting the controls every step of the way. Hell it almost led to the death of my characters on more than one occasion (trying to escape from Dr. Death was the closest i came to losing someone).
Having said that, the reason i won't be replaying it anytime soon aside from being satisfied with my ending is the tension of many of those scenes had a profound effect on me, and i need to put some distance before i can play through them again. That's why i have no interest in the DLC at this time. Trying to escape a serial killer's house? Ugh, no thank you.
For all its faults, the game's attention to detail and creation of atmosphere really are top notch, at least in my opinion.

I was wondering. Is it possible to fail the sinking car scene so both Scott and Lauren could drown? And how would that perhaps affect the outcome of the story? I suppose, the game developers has made the game so Scott can't drown in that scene as he's much needed in the rest of the story.
But yeah - vracar - I too did notice that he had trouble with his asthma in the beginning, but as he's revealed as the killer, he suddenly has to problems at all. Not even during the ending fight scene. I seriously doubt that he would have "faked" it all in the beginning and then reveal that he doesn't have asthma at all.
Anyway - I guess the only really consistent thing we see in the game is Norman Jaydens addiction to triptocaine.
I have to replay it again soon so I can try to get different endings - and even though it contradicts with the way I normally play games, I have to see how things are played out with 1 or 2 of the main characters dead. It's like playing the Boulevard of Broken Dreams path in Pandora

The saddest ending by far is the one named Tears in the Rain.

No. I went back and tried that. Shelby breaks out and survives with no help from you.Is it possible to fail the sinking car scene so both Scott and Lauren could drown?
Fred: Since you've played all the endings, I was wondering if it is possible to save the kid, and capture Shelby alive. All the endings I've scene, Shelby either gets away or get killed, but never gets into custody.
