Just commenced my first feature film!
Hey All!
Sorry I have not been the busy little poster I usually am these past few weeks, but there is good reason for that. I have just started pre-production of my first feature-length film! The film is called 'The Connection' and it will be a 90-minute feature set in Sydney, and shot in High Definition (but no 3D haha).
But there is something very unique about this film: I am making it backwards! Basically I have designed the poster, worked out the characters, and have just commenced composing the musical score for the film... the next step which will be underway in a few weeks is writing the screenplay to the story. I pretty much know exactly what's going to happen in the film from start to finish, scene by scene but I am holding off on writing the screenplay until I have finished writing the music. Once that is done I will be making the trailer before shooting any of the film.
Why do it this way you ask? Because it just seems right. I have always been heavily influenced in my projects by music, imagery and all the bits and pieces that make up a great idea... so I am starting with the bits and pieces and working my way into a film from that. I figure this way, just like the brilliant artistry you see in music videos that the marriage of image and sound will compliment the vision in a way that could not have been expressed any other way.
In keeping with the mystique that surrounds the film, and the fact that I would LOVE for everyone to come to their own conclusions about the film during its story I am not giving any of the story away until we are pretty much ready to shoot it... this way everyone is free to use their imagination about the film whilst following its development... I call it passive interactive movie making. You will feel part closer to the film this way, and I think it's a great way of getting some real public momentum behind the project.
I am keeping a blog of all the films developments here if you are interested:

Cheers! And if you have any questions about the film feel free to ask away!

Congrats... I wish you the best of luck, though I'm sure you won't need it... With your talent and skill I'm sure it will be great...
My only question is, What is it about??? But you said you were keeping that under lock and key for now, so I'll respect that... lol
Actually I do have a question... What made you decide to do this now??? Are you still planning to move to the states later this year???

If everything goes to plan Baf I will have progressed far enough into this project to take it to the States for further development. I am hoping I will have a big enough proof of concept by that stage to get some support once I get there. If not I will have to see how much momentum it brings to the table. It may/may not dictate the finer details with the move, but for now I am working on being as proactive as I can.

Ahhh I see your plan now... If you pour your talents into it, they'd be stupid not to pick you up once you start presenting it...
Best of luck Mat... Do keep us updated as much as you feel comfortable sharing...

Pirates, vampires, zombies, ninjas, ghouls, aliens, goblins, monsters, robots, sorcerers, undead, werewolves, demons, mutated dinosaur-cyborgs and those pesky phone salesmen! The shotgun is a one-size-fits-all solution!
Piece by piece Cub builds his throne.
You have the patience and dedication the majority lack when it comes to this industry. Coupled with your factual talent, there can only be success lined up for you.
I'm with Fred on this one. There's hardly anything we can do to help, but should you ever have a request within our reach, don't ever hesitate to ask.

I can vouch for Frank's ability to scare the crap out of people. Frank's so scary, he should come with a laxative warning. Frank's so terrifying, the very thought of meeting himself in his own bedroom at night scares even Frank!

Good luck Cub. I'd have thought that the score has to go last so that it fits in with the dramatic impact of various scenes, but of course you can have an idea and work it into the finished project with a few tweaks once the rest is all there.
I have a connection on facebook who is executive producing some movie in LA at the moment. Not sure if it's of any interest but if that's useful info let me know if you want to see whether it's worth an introduction. I'm not sure how into that scene he is though as he is much more heavily involved in the video game industry.

Thanks for all your comments and support folks! It's really heart-warming to have such a wonderful group of people to share things with. I will probably take some of you up on that offer of assistance when the time comes, because its going to be a huge undertaking and I would love to have as many hands on deck as possible. I might even have to put in some Tex Murphy related cameo/easter-egg appearances.
I also 90% finished composing the main title theme of the film. It's what's kept me up the past few night till ridiculous hours (despite 2 5:30am starts this week for my 9-5 job)... but I think it has paid off... think Thomas Newman, meets Hans Zimmer and a bit of James Horner. You guys will be the first to hear it. because believe it or not I value everyone's opinion here extremely highly... always have.
