Hi all,

How I ended up here: My friend had Mean Streets for his Amiga PC in the 90s, in early h.s.
I loved the noir, excuse me if that's cliche sounding. There's no feeling like running down a mystery in an insomniac fashion amid all those gorgeous twinkling city lights.

A year or so ago, I was able to Google 80s PC detective games until I found a screenshot that reminded me of the title. It was a tough search!

Today I found out that Mean Streets was made into Tex Murphy.

Some other interests include 100 Bullets, the great graphic novel by Vertigo, and the Yakuza games for PS2 & PS3.

- I want to find out if the Tex character is now a "western" guy because his name sounds like that would fit the bill.

- Also looking to know if Mean Streets was ever updated, and if the rumors of a new Tex game are true.

Salud.
Kage, A Big Hearty Welcome To The Boards... Please stick around and join us for many topics...

As for your inquiry about Tex... I'm not so sure about this Tex Avery thing... Someone else might know better, but to my knowledge Tex Murphy is his own character and has never been made into anything else...

There are 5 titles in the Series and if Mean Streets is the only one you've played, you are in for a GRAND Awakening...

Mean Streets {MS}
Martian Memorandum {MM}
Under A Killing Moon {UAKM
The Pandora Directive {PD or just Pandora} {voted by most to be the Best in the series}
Overseer

All of the above games are centered around a futuristic P.I. named Tex Murphy, a man who was born a century late, but keeps the traditional business alive... Tex Murphy was originally created by Chris Jones, who is also the Voice and Actor behind the Tex Murphy Character... After the first 2 games, Aaron Connors joined the company and together he and Chris Jones created Under A Killing Moon, The Pandora Directive, and Overseer...

UAKM and Pandora were both turned into a Novel authored by Aaron Connors, which is out in print... UAKM is harder to find which also makes it a bit more expensive, but Pandora can be found on Amazon for under 5 bucks usually...

All of the games have been reprogrammed to run on newer systems, thanks to Dosbox... And they can all be found at www.gog.com, which you can just click the Banner at the top of the screen and it will take you right there... Proceeds from the sales of those games go to the original creators Aaron and Chris who have started up their own company Big Finish Games in hopes of bringing back Tex Murphy... As of right now Tex is on hold, but within the next couple of years it is the hopes of Aaron and Chris to begin work on what they are calling "Secret Project: Fedora"...
But the games will run on Vista and XP, practically flawlessly... And what's better, no Disc Swapping...

You can visit their website at www.bigfinishgames.com and if you like you can purchase their latest games 3 Cards Till Midnight and 3 Cards To Dead Time... Both have a stellar story...

So did I cover everything for you??? If not, don't hesitate to ask... Always nice to see a new/old fan and we here are more than welcome to answer questions, if we're able too...

So please stick around and enjoy some interesting topics and comment on whatever you like... And be sure to read our latest Fan Fiction at the top of this Forum, titled The Eyes Of Grendeljen... But Please, don't post in that thread, {it's for the story only}... There is a dedicated thread for Comments and Reviews...

Howdy Kage. In response to this particular question, Mean Streets was updated as Overseer. Overseer was basically Tex retelling the story of Dr. Linsky as flashbacks. Overseer had Full Motion Video which is much more spectacular than the little chunky pixels you saw moving across the screen in Mean Streets. The game interface and puzzles also got a complete revamp.

Alas we are still waiting for a new Tex game. It's been 12 years and counting since we last saw Tex. Holy cliff hanger, Batman!

A Tex Avery was great.

That was supposed to display an image of the Tex Avery Wolf character. A classic in all respects.

OMG, I have found character Nirvana. "Tex Murphy is a mid-21st century P.I. who tries—with mixed results—to emulate the style and philosophy of the classic film noir detective. Tex is divorced, perpetually broke, cursed with inconsistant social skills, and is rapidly approaching the big 4-O with some premature wrinkles and a bad back—the result of smoking, drinking, a poor diet, and lack of exercise. Tex doesn't fall into the typical "super hero" category, but usually manages to succeed despite his particular knack for getting into trouble and offending the wrong people. In post-WWIII San Francisco..." (excerpt from your main character page.

Y'all look like a great group, looking forward to get to know you. Especially to see what kinds of uncanny things we have in common, this has to be a niche. Appreciate the detailed info. I'm interested in the books you mentioned. And I think both Tex and I were both born too late.

A word on the Wikipedia review - did you like it? I love that they use the word "dystopian", I had my finger on it as one of the good adjectives for this setting but couldn't get it until I read. Yes, definitely fodder for some good fan fic. I'm also guessing some of the same movies come to mind - Mad Max, Blade Runner, maybe even a little Fifth Element?

In the next week or two, I'll try downloading one of the games, I'm on Windows 7. Loved my XP, but - shock - computers crash! I'm still recovering old photos.
Welcome welcome good sir.

Kage,
The Tex games bundled at GOG run great on my Windows 7 machine.

Windows 7 behaves much better for me.

Welcome to the group, Kage! We're always glad to have another Tex-fanatic among us.
Pull up a chair, put your feet up. Relax, kick back, and fall flat on your back. Shouldn't be kicking back with your feet up while sitting in such a rickety chair, now should you? That'll learn ye.

Also, welcome.

Thanks for all the welcomes. Do you mind some more questions to help me get more up to speed? Please feel free to take a stab at any of these.

-Can you tell me more about the history of the board/website?
-And does the Tex Music do-hickey work? It didn't play for me.
-Is there any more development going on as Tex as a character? What are the creators up to?
-What are some more of your pop culture interests?

And at this point, I should take some of this discussion into your chatroom or elsewhere around here. I want to just vacuum up info on Mean Streets and Tex at this point. I like how the mood was established with all our character's grittiness and imperfections, and how the flying car (complete with fax machine) and office were sanctuaries for Tex in the ultra-urban "megalopolis." Very interesting. And I also forgot to mention earlier that I like Miami Vice and Capt. Harlock, if any of you are also fans.
Mean Streets is just the Tip of the Ice Berg... I'm telling you that you need to play the entire series, you will be astonished...
Kage wrote:-And does the Tex Music do-hickey work? It didn't play for me.
Strange, didn't work for me either... It use to... Will have to let James {the admin of the message board} know about it...
Kage wrote:-Is there any more development going on as Tex as a character? What are the creators up to?
Tex the character is basically well developed... I don't really see how they could develop him anymore... Just give us new games to play... As for the creators, as I stated in my first post they have created their own company now, it is called Big Finish Games and can be found at the following website...

www.bigfinishgames.com

They do hope to make a New Tex Adventure, but right now it is on the back burner while they establish themselves as a company in the industry...
They have however made 2 games since starting this company... 3 Cards To Midnight and 3 Cards To Dead Time... Both have a stellar story... It is kind of like the Hidden Objects games, but much much better...

We don't have a Chat Room... We just post messages to the message board here and reply to whatever peaks our interests...

Welcome to our taut international brotherhood, Kage. You have asked some profound questions and received some excellent answers. Hopefully you will stay around a few years and see if the positive thinking of world peoples can influence the "big guys" to create some new Tex games, books, radio segments or anything else Tex related.

What aren't we into? You name it, there's a fan for it somewhere on this board.

We've got members from all over the globe. Post something and you can be sure to hear remarks (sometimes smark-aleck ones, I'm talking to you Fred) about your post.

So whatever you want to talk about, bring it on!
