Update from the Cubmeister...
Let me start by saying a big group HAPPY BIRTHDAY to everyone on the board! Being an apparent birthday season I don't think there is anyone left who has not has a birthday within the past few days, haha! So I figured I would put all my eggs in one basket and say a big congratulations to everyone at once... even if it is not your birthday.
The reason for this update is to explain my current situation. As you are aware I was pretty much locked in and ready to move to California in September this year (or at least before the year end).... sadly this endeavour has fallen though the cracks! Seems as though my potential employers and list of options which were made available to me have all but disintegrated.
My passion and hunger to get there has not changed, however. But I have decided to move back into focusing my energy, resources and time to my projects back home and explore a different method of getting my ass to the states.
The job market (as it is, especially in the US) is dire, so I can pretty much scratch the idea of going there via employment which is based on base-level recruitment opportunities alone. Which leaves me with one remaining option: recognition.
Basically, if I am not going to find my way there my making a start at the bottom, I am going to climb my way to the top back home here in Sydney and hopefully make enough noise so that I will hopefully get snapped up by the industry over there. Ambitious, hopeful, foolhardy... this method can be explained in many ways, but at least it allows me to pursue my passions to their full extent here, whilst at the same time making a name for myself so that if I do decide to try again I will have a reputation that precedes me.
As of the past 3 weeks I have had my ass in 6th gear. I relaunched my new freelance business, formerly called "Pro Vision Media" I am now "Mat Tyler Multimedia / Design". New name, new image, new website, and new methodology. The launch was a huge success, and thanks to a very aggressive launch strategy (using social networking connections to aid in exposure) and some clever coding, I was able to bring my new site up to the #1 spot on google within 3 hours of launch.
Here is a link to the new site for those of you who have not already seen it:
http://www.mattyler.com.au
(I am sure most of you on my facebook have already seen my plug this to the Nth degree!)
I have also been busy printing flyers, new business cards, pricing lists, email forms, etc. And my partner has been spending her days off cold calling for me! So as you can see getting a steady client base, enough to enable me to leave my current full-time position (which I loathe) is my #1 goal... so if anyone here knows anyone who might need design or web services, flick them my site!
At the same time my script for the feature length film "The Connection" is progressing nicely. I have almost completed the script story-board and have had 5 or 6 brainstorming sessions with colleagues and relatives to iron out kinks in the continuity of the story. with the script commencement date being only weeks away, I am positive it will be a swift and active process, provided I maintain the page. My federal funding target for the film's production is $10 million... with an initial personal/pilot target budget of $100,000. both relatively achievable provided I have enough materials to present a solid project pitch to the powers that be. So far things are on the right track to achieve these goals, and I will be keeping everyone posted about its progress with the film's production blog (which I have been meaning to get back into writing).
Well that's it from my end... just though I would let you guys know if you were wondering why I was not packing my bags in preparation to meet some of you lovely people in person! But I do promise if I can't find my way there professionally any time soon, I will definitely visit on a holiday and do the "Friends of Tex" tour!
Cheers!

Wow you make it sound like such an epic saga. The ongoing adventures of Cubase!
I was wondering why we had not heard news of you packing up your stuff and your rabbits.
Thanks for sharing and letting us be here to cheer you on.
Yeah I know how rough the job market is these days. I am also pondering a relocation but do not know what will happen yet. We've just got to remain optimistic about the future. Otherwise the world is a pretty bleak place without hope.
Best wishes and good luck.

Sorry that your plans have fallen through, but it's good to hear that you are keeping high spirits...
Yes our economy is for the birds right now... We have about as much luck with people finding a job as Tex does landing cards in his hat, even worse come to think of the latest figures...
You're great at what you do Cub, keep it up and someone worth wild will notice you, I'm sure of it...

I envy you your undying enthusiasm and willpower to find new ways to solve problems and traverse new obstacles that life throws at you.
I'm not claiming it's easy for you, I'm just saying I'm noticing that you're not lying down to give up. It's... inspiring.
Thanks buddy. I needed some of that.

Pirates, vampires, zombies, ninjas, ghouls, aliens, goblins, monsters, robots, sorcerers, undead, werewolves, demons, mutated dinosaur-cyborgs and those pesky phone salesmen! The shotgun is a one-size-fits-all solution!
Cub,
as always, you have my backing and support, I wish you the best and i'm sure that you will get a result you will be very happy with. No matter how brilliant, I try not to provide predictions to my friends as to how successful someone will be in their endeavors. This is especially the case with you when we have to factor in how inviting and open the industry over there will be to talented input given how cutthroat the industry is. But i've known you long enough to know that once you set your heart on something, you pursue it relentlessly and you always seem to achieve a result that leaves you with a grin on your face - like a true winner!
So, a lot could happen over there and I wish you the best of luck. I can't imagine any of it being easy...hell, I haven't even moved out of home or graduated so who am I to provide any advice?
As for my backing, believe it or not, in the previous few months, I have discovered that I want a future in film and the media once I graduate. It's my passion. So if you need any support (carrying light rigs, pouring the coffee, wake up calls to Val Kilmer to get his ass out of bed, voice overs, acting - ANYTHING) please let me know!
I'm looking forward to the next Cubdate in anticipation that the next installment will only be all the more glorious next time around!
PS: when you get overseas, can you mail back a PM that is actually capable of doing their job rather than merely "caretaking"? We could really use one of those at the moment.

Cub, I'm sorry to hear that things with the States fell through, but I am sure that you will find success. You have what are, in my opinion, the two most important factors in being successful: determination and hard-work. (Of course winning the lottery or being born into an extremely wealthy family probably wouldn't hurt, but I've never been able to get either of those to work out.) I (and I imagine the rest of this board as well) will be behind you 100% and be willing to help you out any way I can. Keep on pushing.
I'm not sure, but I think Fred just posted a serious comment. j/k
I'm with the rest - sorry on the one hand, but best wishes on the other. As a young man you have a LONG life to look forward to attaining your goals and far be it from me to hinder those efforts. On the contrary, go get 'em! Never give up!

In Fred's defense he is right, they do occur, I believe I have witnessed a total of 4 {including the one above} since joining 2 1/2 years ago...Fred Buer wrote:They're few and far between, Jim. But they do occur!

Thanks for all the kind words everybody... it really makes me feel all warm and gooey inside. The kind of thing I would keep a copy of to read whenever things gets rough or difficult. They are the kinds of passages people never forget, no matter where they end up, and I appreciate each and every one of you for taking the time to add your own kind words... and Fred, for someone who apparently only shares a serious comment once every blue moon, you sure made this one count, at least to me, and that goes for the rest of you.

Shame on the Cali part, but we all know it's just a question of time. I've found, over time, that a will such as yours is all one really needs for everything else to fall into place. Of course timing and luck never hurt, but they merely speed things up. Patience and will, this is one thing you never want to lose.
I'd hoped we might share a beer while I tour California next month. Seems I'll have to get my arse to Australia for the brew!
