OMG GOG is Gone!

Dear GOG users,

We have recently had to give serious thought to whether we could really keep GOG.com the way it is. We've debated on it for quite some time and, unfortunately, we've decided that GOG.com simply cannot remain in its current form.

We're very grateful for all support we've received from all of you in the past two years. Working on GOG.com was a great adventure for all of us and an unforgettable journey to the past, through the long and wonderful history of PC gaming.

This doesn't mean the idea behind GOG.com is gone forever. We're closing down the service and putting this era behind us as new challenges await.

On a technical note, this week we'll put in place a solution to allow everyone to re-download their games. Stay tuned to this page and follow us on Twitter and Facebook for updates.

All the best,
GOG.com Team
Samantha

DAMMIT!
well this is a shock, no warning just no web page anymore. Glad I have copied all the games to a dvd disk for future installations.

there is talk that this might be a publicity stunt, weird way of marketing if this is the case.

If it's a publicity stunt it's a pretty cruel thing to do to folks.

I really wouldn't be surprised with this with more and more companies putting their old libraries on places like Steam. :\ shame

the more I read the more I am convinced it's not the end of gog.
there is talk about gog's web page being changed from beta, & also changing to DRM games.
they were still taking payments early this morning & there are a few pissed off people who can't download their games.

if it's only for publicity it seems to be working.

I download mafia 2 demo from steam & I don't think I will ever buy from them.
I hate having to download everything again when you make changed to your pc.

Well, as a huge fan of the site you've probably anticipated my disappointment in this matter. Truthfully, I'm sad to see it go but it wasn't unexpected either. By having low prices for DRM-free games from a previous era, it's a wonder they were able to run the site for as long as they did. Mainly because the site caters to a specific clientele and the fact that once downloaded, with no piracy security or DRM, they're easier than ever to just share with your friends.

Aaron has even expressed similar issues with respect to the underperformance of Big Finish Games and while he is not giving up on the community or Tex Murphy, he is proceeding hesitantly with future projects. It's becoming clearer and clearer that console gaming seems to be the Mecca of the industry. Personally, I love console and handheld gaming, but I could never totally replace it with PC gaming.

That's the generation gap for you i guess.
just got the news. How the hell is this possible, they were getting plenty of money from the sales they were running.

I'm so pissed off at this right now.

I wonder if AC would be willing to throw the support of Big Finish Games behind it and do some kind of merger or just acquire GOG altogether... Could be a good move for them...

I can't see GOG not being Profitable, I mean it's not like they were spending huge dollars making games, they were just making old games available again... Of course I don't know everything that was required behind it, but still...

Massive disappointment... I had already gotten several things from them and I had a huge list for when I got the Computer Room situated...

The important thing to note here is that the DRM policy is dead, and my expectation is that they're moving out of the niche into a full Digital Distribution system to compete with Steam- and likely will rename the company. Either way its dead, the ethos along with it and we're going to have to download our stuff if we want to keep it. I wouldn't blow it off just as "oh they're going live" that's not the way it sounds, they wouldn't release such a negative sounded press statement if it were just a hoax to trick people into hyping over a new client.

We now have to download all our games, they wouldn't make us do that if it were just a new client. If it is just a publicity stunt, its going to back fire BADLY, its a huge inconvience for everyone to have to put up with this $#it and not be given any real good reason for it nor preperation.. so it better bloody well not be a hoax, or they'll loose a lot of respect from the community that is their blood line!.

But if it does turn out to be that way, the marketing guy who did this is an idiot and needs to learn marketing again.. because you DONT sacrifice a good reputation like this, what they have done is put a spotlight on the fact that they have failed and have backflipped on their company ethos, it'll be looked down upon by many. If it had been just a new client launch instead, they likely wouldn't have gotten any backlash that we all know is coming when they announce that they're not shutting down and that they've changed their policy in order to meet the demands of those asshole publishers like Activision.

I do hope I'm over reacting.. but you don't do stuff like this without telling us terrible dreadful news... or without expecting a massive backlash.
