Hey I was watching a rerun of TNG last night and was watching Redemption Part Two.
In this episode the Romulans are trying to cross the border into Klingon territory without being detected. Usually this would be no problem with their cloaking devices.
However Picard developed this plan to have a bunch of ships get together and send tachyon beams in between the ships to make this kind of web. Any ship passing through this web would be detectable even with a cloaking device.
The Romulans counter by finding the weakest ship in the web at the edge and disabling it so it can't send out the tachyon beam.
My question is why would this plan have ever worked? Space has 360 degrees of freedom. If the Romulans could identify the boundary edge of the web, why not go around the edge? There was no need to pass through the web.
Now in the pilot TNG episode Q, created a web like structure. He had infinite powers he could make it infinite and trap the ship so that made sense.

Once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny.

Distance and time may have been factors. If memory serves (where have I heard that before), the Romulans were under a time constraint and may have felt going through would be much quicker. Then again, my memory doesn't serve me all that well.
"If you look to me for illumination, you better have a flashlight!"
But now if it was a time constraint, they should have rushed through the center of the web which would have been closer. By choosing to go near the edge of the web, they've already admitted that traveling near the edge was not too far for them.

If my memory serves {lol}, I believe the Detection Grid was put up between 2 Nebula and the Romulans couldn't go through those...
I do however remember Data captaining a ship and he had some real problems with his first officer...
What channel was that Episode on??? The TNG I watched was the one where they got trapped in a Binary Star System and a Tyken's Rift...
