A Casual Observation

Tex can pawn items to a pawn shop for cash in Mean Streets but not to Rook's Pawnshop in UAKM and Pandora. Does Rook not accept items from Tex because he cant stand items that Tex "touches' or what?
I just assumed Tex must have done something to piss of Rook a while back and now he refuses to accept anymore stuff from him.

Or maybe Tex pawned off everything of value in MS and MM, so therefore he has nothing to pawn in UAKM...

Well his inventory items. Certainly that jade and silver dollar in UAKM would have pawnable. Or heck the Power Cell or Pandora Device! You could pawn stuff that has no value in Mean Streets anyways for a dollar.

I like what Sam said. Maybe Tex ripped Rook off somehow by mistakenly representing an item he pawned. That would be cool if the explanation was worked into a new game.
First off, we needed the Jade stone to give to Franco Franco... Second, the Silver Dollar was given to us By Rook, why would we turn around and pawn Rook's item to Rook??? As for the Power Cell or the Pandora Device, why would you pawn Mission Items???

If Tex had ripped Rook off, then why does Rook lend money to Tex??? We had to pay Rook $300 in Pandora because he had lent it to us... And if Rook is Lending Tex money without taking an Item in return, then that tells me that Tex Owns nothing of value that Rook is willing to take...

Also in Pandora we had no need for money, Tex had plenty of money to get through the mission, and then some... Not to mention he says that Witt wrote him a check for his expenses and then some...
In UAKM we had our Nifty Electronics Shop Credit Card... So there wasn't a big need for money there either...

I think you're trying to read a little too much into this... lol

It's a game mechanic they opted not to use in the later games, because it would not fit the rest of the story in either game.

Sorry to cut through the fluff there.

I see Rook as a founder for the MER {Mutants for Equal Rights}... The Shop is a front for their meetings and whatnot...

He's not a founder I don't think, but he did play a huge part in the war along side Louie. What I will agree with though is that there is a good chance he is a racist given his attitude towards the other human characters in the game. He comes across as one of those old codgers that still think all Germans and Japanese people are evil in today's world- since it was the Humans that openly opressed the mutants.

I did notice though he actually started to open up to tex in Pandora, he was still a bit of a jerk but he toned it down a bit when tex saved Emily and they confirmed it was the black arrow killer that tex killed. He stops being a jerk after that.

I strongly support the idea of Rook being a reverse racist. Pot meet Kettle :D Makes him being an old cranky bastard even more effective. Louie comes off more as a "we're all good now, all is forgiven, lets put this crap behind us" type of guy. Almost like he wasn't interested in fighting but knew he had to or else they'd never let him run his resturant in peace.

One thing is for sure that when Aaron and Chris wrote this, the politics they created was IMO one of the best and most interesting things about their games. If they ever did make an MMO about Tex's universe I would definately set it during the WW3 and the Mutant wars with the Law and Order Party.
I think Rook took a better liking to Tex when he solved the Pawn Shop Robberies in UAKM... But since we didn't interact with him a whole lot, we didn't see the breakthrough in their relationship until Pandora...

I think it is kind of like being a Racist and then having another race move in next door, over the years you will come to like or at least accept that person, but still have your point of view of being a racist... I think this is the case with Rook, he is still a racist as you suggest, but he has become Tolerant of Tex, because like it or not, he has accepted the fact that Tex isn't going anywhere... Plus as I already said, Tex helped him when he was Robbed... And like Louie said, if Tex hadn't recovered the bracelet, it would have set Rook back awhile...

Okay maybe not a Founder of MER, but definitely a head figured...

Is Rook a mutant? Or just a really old man?

Both... lol

To my understanding from Tex's narratives in UAKM, he is the only Norm in that part of town... All the Norms live in the New City from what he says...

Tex was born with an immunity to mutation, all the people that lived in Chandler Avenue/Old San Fransico during the war are mutants- everyone in New Sanfransico is a Norm.

Nilo I suspect is a mutant. Emily is definately a Norm as is Regan. The Electronics Shop guys are definately Norms (because only Norms would be allowed to own a franchise.)

Rook is a mutant, he served along side Louie against the Law and Order Party during the war as I understand. You can see their WW3 grafiti on the theater in UAKM.
Hamm Underwood was in no way a Norm... He was clearly a Mutant... As for the black guy who took over in Pandora I haven't a clue...

Nilo I don't know about either... Could just be a really disgusting Norm...
