Problems with UAKM
I just bought my first Tex Murphy game on Amazon.com and I am having problems while running the game. I am using an old Compaq Presario laptop that uses Windows 98. I followed someone's instructions on how to install it and get it running in MS DOS, but noticed problems with the sound. It will initially play the music fine, but then when I try to have a conversation with someone after the first few words, the sound turns into a loud screeching/clicking noise and the voices and music no longer play. I then have to go to the menu that allows you to change the sound settings and try to find a new Sound Device. Once I enter that menu the sound stops. I also noticed that when I am in a conversation with someone that the words on the HUD seem to be off center so that I can only read the top half of the words (not the discussion choices but the menu choices). This is a used copy but was listed as Like New and has very minimal scratches on it, and is in quite good condition. So I am guessing/hoping that this is merely a problem with my PC. Any advice?
First off a big hearty welcome to the community... Once we get you up and running, I'm sure you'll love Tex just like the rest of us here do...
I doubt the problem is with the CDs... I'm pretty sure I've seen people talk about this problem before... Sadly I don't remember how it is solved... I've sure somebody will remember though...
Have you considered purchasing the games through www.gog.com... They have all 5 of the Tex games available through Download, no Disc Swapping or having to worry about Scratches... Works on modern computers with the aid of Dosbox... They are only $9.99 each for the main 3 games, and the 2 earlier games are bundled together, you get both for only $5.99... A big plus is that some of that goes to the original creators of Tex Murphy... They have hopes of making a new one in the near future...
Anyway, if you aren't interested in purchasing from GOG, I do hope you get it running... The only thing I can think of that could be causing this kind of problem is some sort of conflict in your Ports for the Sound Device... But I could be way off on that and it could be something completely different...

first of all when you say you are playing under dos are you going to the dos prompt from windows or are you booting into full dos when you turn on to your computer. there is a menu when you close down the machine to boot into dos (that's the full dos.)Igloop wrote:I just bought my first Tex Murphy game on Amazon.com and I am having problems while running the game. using full dos you need a sound card & based what you are running (laptop) you would have only on board sound.
these days you can play UAKM with dos box which is on top of windows but it's designed for xp & later. The gog version isn't for windows 98
with dos box version 0.70 it might run with 98

Bafitis: Thank you for welcoming me here. Though I am not up and running yet, I can already tell you for sure that I am in love with the Tex Murphy Series. When I first heard about UAKM a couple months ago I was intrigued. After going to Youtube and hearing the sweet jazz and watching the intro and first few bits of gameplay I knew that this is the game I have been looking for all my life. Once I heard that there were more Tex Murphy games I was even more excited. And yes, I have considered purchasing the games at GoG, but that won't be for a while and I much prefer to hunt down old stuff like this and experience it how it originally was, Disc Swapping and all
I do intend to eventually buy them on GoG to support Aaron and Chris with Project Fedora.
Plumgas: I'm not actually booting the computer up into DOS, but using a program on the computer called MS-DOS. I followed these instructions
( http://www.mrbillsadventureland.com/rev ... 98uakm.htm ) So what would you suggest I do? I am not sure if I could even get online on that old thing, I could try to, are you saying that there is a version of DOS box called 0.70 that I might be able to download? If all this help fails to get me running UAKM I have seriously been considering buying the Mac version which would probably run on my old 2000 iMac G3.

ms dos is the dos you are using through windows,
dos box runs on top of windows which emulates dos & sound.
UAKM moon is very easy to run these days but you really do need dos box.
the install guide you are using looks okay, but probably not on the pc you are using.
the sound problems you are having are to do with your onboard sound.
In the old days laptops were not designed for games due to the fact of no sound cards & graphics cards.
System Requirements:
PC:
386/25 MHz Processor or better
MS-DOS
4 MB RAM
SVGA display (VESA compliant)
Sound card (supports all major sound boards)
2X CD-ROM drive
8 MB available hard disk space
Keyboard/mouse/speakers
Macintosh:
68040 to PowerPC Mac
16 MB
8-bit (256 colors) 13" up
System 7.1 or higher
15 MB of hard disk space
2X CD-ROM drive

If you purchase the games from GOG, they will already be loaded with the Dosbox Emulator, there will be no reason to download Dosbox unless you plan on Installing the games manually and do the whole Disc Swapping thing... If you plan on doing that, then I suggest a Visit to Nilo's website and download his files that he recommends... His site can be found at the following address...
http://home.wideopenwest.com/~hbech/
Nilo himself is no longer online on a regular basis, so if you experience any problems, don't email him like his site suggests, you most likely won't get an answer for quite sometime... Come back here and ask for help first and we'll do the best we can...
Dosbox, Direct from the source...
http://dosbox.com/
It's free, but if money isn't a major factor for you, you could donate to help the programmers, but it is in no way necessary...

I believe Dosbox downloads as a Zip file, you should be able to throw it on a Disc and then just take it to the other computer, or stick it on a Flash Drive and do it that way...

plumgas: I just bought the Police Quest Collection, and since those require DOSbox to run, the disc came with it already, so my Windows XP computer has DOSbox on it now, but could you please give me instructions on how to install and set up Tex Murphy UAKM on there now, I think it is different than the Windows 98 instructions.
Actually the Police Quest Collection should only have it in those games... I don't think it installs Dosbox onto your computer as a stand alone program...
The Tex Murphy games do the same thing if you purchase them from GOG, it will have the Dosbox program installed with the game, but it doesn't install Dosbox directly and by itself...
If I'm wrong, it will have placed a Dosbox Icon on your Desktop... Double Click that to open Dosbox and you can then install UAKM as if you were in Dos back in the old computers... Just change the Directory to your CD/DVD Drive and then type in Install or Setup, whichever UAKM used... And it will take you through the Setup process...
But I'm pretty sure that you don't have regular Dosbox installed...
