Another royal wedding
Well congratulations to Prince William for finally getting engaged. I'm curious how his wedding will compare to his parents'. I saw an article saying he gave his fiancee his mother's engagement ring. It's quite a sparkler.

Yes, I was surprised for a couple of reasons - a photo apparently after the announcement shows her not wearing any engagement ring at all.
And secondly my brother in law is a cabbie and he picked her and her Mum up only last week and she must have been engaged but she wasn't wearing it then.
Purely as an aside, they went to Fenwicks and the Mum asked whether he accepted payment in Francs.
Francs! They've not even been legal tender in France for years.

Well a couple reasons not to wear a ring like that come to mind...
1. It could make you too big of a target, especially if you don't have the English equivalent of the Secret Service protecting you, yet... I'm rather surprised that the fiance of the Prince isn't under a security detail though, as well as being given a car for her transportation needs... I mean it seems to me she could be as big of a target as the Prince himself for kidnapping/ransom purposes. ring or no ring...
2. It could have been the wrong size and has been sent out to be resized... I'm more inclined to lean towards this one... Though for the Royal Family, I can't imagine anything taking too long to be done...
3. Maybe she just isn't much of a jewelry wearer... I can't really see this one being it though...
4. Until they are married, maybe she is only allowed to wear it when they are together or when they know they'll be photographed...

Baf,
I heard on the news that after the engagement was official, they did send over security to protect her from now on. They were just waiting for the official word.
But I think it was more likely that the ring needed to be resized for her. I wonder if it feels weird and creepy for her to wear Diana's ring. I know I'd certainly wouldn't feel right about wearing it if it was me.

I'm just glad that for the first time ever, a middle class is actually going to be in the royal family. I think its very fitting of how far britian has come and William was foolish for allowing himself to be convinced that she wasn't of good class to be his wife- I'm glad to see though that the thought process was "what the fork did I just do... ok my friends are idiots..", see if this were harry he would have caved into peer pressure
.
I just hope this doesn't get messy like with Charles, whom I feel is notoriously a douchebag- I'm just glad he'll never be king. I repsect William much more and I think he'll make an excelent king some day and be very much worthy of his families history. My hopes is that he does get very involved in politics just like his grandmother and that because he has a middle class wife he respects all members of society unlike the rest of his family, its for that reason britian has become such an inequal place and certainly something can be done to fix that.
What I hope is greater power is being restored to the monarch eventually.

The tradition of a Son giving a girl his mother's ring goes back a long ways, not just with the Royal Families... There's nothing to feel weird about... Parents die, it's the ever going cycle of life... Just because she was killed in a car "accident"* doesn't make the ring a symbol of anything evil or anything...
* I say "accident" because there is major debate among some of the car being sabotaged... I haven't a clue or an opinion on the matter, but I wanted a disclaimer before it started some sort of conspiracy debate... Whether she was killed or died because of a true accident should still put no weight of despair on the ring...
She should feel honored that her boyfriend/fiance loves her enough to entrust such a family heirloom to her... Because the rules of marriage state that the engagement ring is a Gift and if they were to break up she would not be inclined to give it back... I'd like to think that she would, but who knows for sure...

I think in most states (and I know we're talking about the U.K., so I have no idea if the law is the same) that the engagement ring is a gift given on the condition of marriage. Therefore, if the man breaks off the engagement, the woman can keep the ring. But, if the woman breaks off the engagement, she must return the ring.Bafitis wrote:Because the rules of marriage state that the engagement ring is a Gift and if they were to break up she would not be inclined to give it back... I was speaking of them breaking up after marriage... If she has good reason {he cheats or becomes an abusive husband or something}, then she is under no obligation to return the ring...
I don't know the rules/laws in the UK either, we need Demonlawyer in here for that...

That was my understanding too Dcat. When I got divorced I gave my back my engagement and wedding band. I certainly wouldn't want to keep them as they would be a bad remembrance.dcat151 wrote:I think in most states (and I know we're talking about the U.K., so I have no idea if the law is the same) that the engagement ring is a gift given on the condition of marriage. I know people die all the time and family heirlooms do get passed down. However I feel that while objects can't be cursed, I think they can evoke bad memories. Maybe some people can get over it and some people can't. Just my thoughts.
