Dexter musings, Walking dead and the best show you never saw
Breaking Bad is coming back on. If you haven't seen it I HIGHLY suggest you do. Hands down some of the best writing ever. I tore through the DVD's and bought a season pass for season 3. Which was the best of so far. IMHO.
The big question for me in Dexter is the debroah issue. I can't get too spoilerific, but I wondered if the situation would ever come to a head. I'm thinking next week it will.
Not the best season, I would rank 4 and 1 as my favorites with 5,2, and 3 progressively weaker. Season 5 got stronger as it went along, and who else thinks that the actor that played Quinn couldn't handle his success and got coked out? Such a sad loss of muscle tone. Like Debroah, please have a sandwich, and maybe a milkshake.
And the Walking dead? Frank daramount hires the same damn actors all the time! The acting isn't as strong as i'd hoped, but the source material is really good. I keep wondering what will get put in and what will fall by the wayside.
Anyhow, not many of my friends or coworkers watch them, and its not really massage time chat lol. If anyone wants to kick around speculation or chatter about these shows, I'd love to discuss.

The only one I watch out of what you listed is The Walking Dead... So far I've enjoyed it, but like you said the acting could be a bit stronger... I'm glad it got picked up for a 2nd season... Still kind of pissed that there were only 6 episodes though... Hopefully the 2nd season has the standard 13 or more...
As for other shows... Sons Of Anarchy was really good this season, I was pleased with how it ended as well... Really disappointed that Rescue Me will be ending after next season, but they had a good run...

Breaking Bad I know nothing of.
However, I do try to follow the other shows you mentioned.
I've also recently seen Boardwalk Empire. Which I admit I quite like.

Pirates, vampires, zombies, ninjas, ghouls, aliens, goblins, monsters, robots, sorcerers, undead, werewolves, demons, mutated dinosaur-cyborgs and those pesky phone salesmen! The shotgun is a one-size-fits-all solution!
Awesome thread, Jen!
I agree with you across the board...and I watch ALL these shows, as well as Mad Men. I tried to like Rubicon, but it just didn't deliver.
Breaking Bad is one of the most unique shows ever made. It's really a character study and its uniqueness comes from the pacing; unlike most TV for the ADD generation, this show has been allowed to slowly develop the characters and relationships and the payoffs really start to kick in during Season 3 (which was as good as anything I've ever seen on TV). But you MUST experience the first two seasons to get the full, rich narrative experience. And the acting is absolutely phenomenal - second to none.
I don't know if I'll continue to watch the Walking Dead. The acting is actually painful at times (and I'm something of an expert on bad acting) and it's preventing me from caring about the characters, which is fairly important in a zombie setting.
Love me some Dexter. Season 1 was my favorite. Season 3 was my least favorite, though well worth watching nonetheless. This season (5) may be the oddest story arc and it's teetered on the edge a few times. It seems like they've tried to pack too much in; some great ideas seem to get wasted or underused. In past seasons, situations would get hinted at, then develop, then twist, then get resolved in some unexpected way. This season things pop up and get resolved within the same episode.
Anyone else watch True Blood? I usually avoid anything vampire-related, but I was curious to see what Alan Ball (of Six Feet Under fame) would do with the genre. The show hasn't grabbed me like some others, but it's interesting and Anna Pacquin is fun to watch.

I was trying to put off getting HBO back as long as humanly possible. I was ticked off at them for cancelling not only Carnivale', but I think, hastily rushing to end Rome as well. Their saving grace was embracing "Game of Thrones." I am so hoping that non-readers embrace it as well. The first book was one of my favorites, I think a genre busting series, and like "Breaking Bad", I SO eagerly await the next installment. But since there won't be much to watch after this week, I might get cracking on some TruBLood DVD's.
As far as "Walking Dead" goes, the main thing I've learned in over 1000 graphic novel pages, is don't get attached to anyone!!!!
It looks like we've got till fall for season 2, here's hoping they either replace a few characters or get them some serious coaching. It's one of those shows that you really WANT to like it, but the both of us end up screaming ACT! ACT!!! not overact! at the screen.
The funny thing is we go directly from Dexter at 9 pm, (which I think has very good acting overall) to Walking Dead at 10 so the disparity is glaringly apparent.
In Dexter I do agree that they've plowed through WAY too much story material this season, and I wished that they could have delved more into things that were hastily resolved, and with so many bad guys in this little clique, you never get to know any of them. It's a weakness in this year, but I can see how they wanted to change from an intense character study from last season, or the "monster of the week" shows. heh heh.
I have to agree with you Aaron, that Breaking Bad has hands down some of the best acting and writing around. It makes me envious of their skills at crafting characters, aside from the whole silly klepto stuff, you bond so much with these guys. Even the minors, I love Brandon and Skinny Pete, Mike and Saul, and Hank. I just frickin love the "boner" scene. There are so many great lines, we banter "it's all shiny up in here" and "thats a lot of cheddar yo", anyone listening to us must think we're crazy.
Anyway, here's hoping they don't jump the shark next Sunday at the finale.
Cheers!

Yes I am a big fan of True Blood... I even attended the special event they held in June just before the Season began...AC wrote:Anyone else watch True Blood?
When did you start watching it??? This was their 3rd Season...
Anyone else watch the Spartacus series that Starz is doing??? I really enjoyed their first season and can't wait for the next... Shame about the Andy Whitfield though... He had to give up the part of Spartacus due to cancer... Hopefully he recovers and can resume the role before they start taping of the 2nd season...
The Pre-Season is due out in January... It's a 6 Episode Season that takes place before Spartacus... They did this in hopes that Whitfield will beat the cancer and come back to the show...

Alright Jen, on you recommendation I saw the first season of Breaking Bad.
And...
Now I need to get hold of the 2nd season. And see the 3rd after that. And they need to hurry up with the 4th and they damn well better not cancel the thing any time soon!
I'd never heard about AMC (not so strange considering it's a US channel and I don't live there), but some channels get famous across the borders. HBO is the first that comes to mind, with shows like Sopranos, The Wire, Deadwood, Treme and more recently, Boardwalk Empire.
Then came Mad Men, and AMC became known here. I didn't hear about Breaking Bad until you told me about it, but I did hear about The Walking Dead.
Anyway. With my own background in chemistry, I'm loving Breaking Bad. When Pinkman threw the hydrofluoric acid in the bathtub I was laughing hysterically because I knew what would happen. I'm familiar with the stuff myself. Got the scars to prove it, too. And now I'm getting new scars. They're all around my tummy. From where I burst into laughter.
So, thanks Jen and Aaron, for convincing me I needed to see this! Loving it!
