Yep, I have a Math Degree now

I've mentioned it before, and I don't know how many of you recall or saw it then, but I'm finishing my Senior year at the University of Dayton where I have been working on two degrees. Well, I got my exam scores back for my final Math class, Real Analysis, and I have in fact passed, don't worry I wasn't close to failing. But, at least now it's official. I have a bachelor of science in Mathematics. Now, my last semester, I'll be finishing up my Computer Science degree, two classes left, and a couple of other side classes I need for that major. So, in four short years I'll have earned two degrees, and it's been a rough go but worth it. Thought I'd share my joy with you all on finishing one degree.

First of all. . . many congrats! That's a tough row to hoe. . .math and computer science. (p.s. I have a B.S. in comp. sci. too)
Second of all. . .you're nearby! I work in Cincinnati and live in northern Kentucky.
Lastly, here's a riddle/joke that a math/comp. sci. major should have no problem with. . .
Why do computer geeks confuse Halloween with Christmas?

Congrats. Do you guys have the same grading system over there that we have over here (ie First, 2:1 2:2, 3rd etc)?

Well done! Now I know who to come to whenever I need some superior maths queries!
And Computer Science? Wow. ...just one small note, if you start having nightmares about the number '2' then things are definately wrong.

(okay... so it's a computer science in-joke, but some of you may get it).
Good luck with it... soon enough we will have a qualified team of professionals each with a different job contributing to something big... I can feel it.
Fly my prettys! Fly!!!

Congrats, littlekeck.
realy good show.

my last edjucation was computer programing.
Not in programing itself like java or cobalt but in the PSD and Flowcharts way.
I had to sort out how to structure a helpdesk department. Write the manuals or rewrite becouse they all where in english. Did a course in english manual translations so i could do that.
Also remake all the information screens translating and sorting of all incoming data.
And i passed it too how dumb could i be me having shity eyesight and then trying to read pages and pages of code to find a missing ";" in a 3 page statement.
HIHI as u can untherstand im not in that kind of work no more but i did enjoy proving to alot of peaple i could do it on my own.
I can do alot the problem is i cant do it fast enought to be of use to a company that needs to be profiteble becouse i take too long a time.
anyways im ranting i just wanted to say KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK and enjoy live u only have 1 of those u know.

Well, I think people have forgotten about my "riddle" (* sniff, sniff *), but I'll post the answer anyway:
Why do computer geeks confuse Halloween with Christmas? Because 31 OCT = 25 DEC.
It's scary that someone even thought of that one.

Gary, sadly enough, I've seen that before. Everyone, thanks for your congratulations and wishes of continued prosperity. This last semester shouldn't be too rough, as it'll be my lightest load yet. The real test will come when I get back all these Ph.D program applications. I have yet to see how I did on the Math Specific GRE (Graduation Record Examination), but that will determine a large part to where I get to go and whether I'll get it paid for or not.
Thanks again,
Keck

I'm not sure I get it either. If OCT refers to the # 8, then 31 OCT would be 248. If DEC equals 10 then 25 DEC would be 250. That's off by two but very close. Course, I'm probably WAY off in my line of reasoning, but at 59 I can get away with more than I use to.

I just had an IT friend of mine explain that joke to me.
I groaned.

Jim, Demon, I'll elaborate, sadly enough. OCT in this case refers to a number in base 8. Now, you may be asking what that means, but imagine for a second you only have 8 fingers. If that were the case, your counting system would be based on 7 being your highest digit, before you had to go back to 0 and raide the "tens spot" to 1. Essentially, 8 would become your 10, like you know it to be now. So, DEC 25 refers to 25 in base 10, the normal system you are all accustomed to. Because each unit is based on 10's, i.e we count 0-9, then we get to 10 which goes to 10-19 or, if you look at it the 1 is staying the same on the left, and the rest are going 0-9. Well, in base 8 it's sort of the same thing, except you only go 0-7 before you reach "10" or, since this is base 8, you reach the number "8". So, as you can hopefully see, and I'm sure a joke will be made or a truthful statement about how I've lost you at this point, it appears to take a larger number, i.e. 31 looks bigger than 25, to express the same number in base 8 than it does in base 10.
So, the joke is, 31 in base 8 is the same number as 25 in base 10. So, that means that OCT 31 = DEC 25, i.e. the joke.
The math follows (In simplified form):
30 would be 3 8's, just as 20 would be 2 10's. So, we take those 3 8's and add them up, getting 24. We take our leftover 1 and add it to 24 getting 25 in base 10, or DEC 25.
Enjoy the joke now, as you have now been taken to my world of advanced nerdery.
Jim's head should promptly explode
