Tex Murphy Pentathlon!!
Well guys show how much I like playing Tex I've decided to do a Tex Murphy Pentathlon. What that means is if I can figure the technical aspects out I will be launching a fundraiser, similar to other Kickstarter campaigns for Tex where people will see me play all 5 Tex games live from start to finish.
The rules are simple. I will be allowed to eat, drink, use the bathroom, take small breaks, think, maybe even interact with my audience, but I cannot sleep until I've finished. My proposed order of the games will be.
Mean Streets
Martian Memorandum
Under A Killing Moon
Pandora Directive (Boulevard of Broken Dreams)
Pandora Directive (Lombard Street) - Entertainment Mode
Pandora Directive (Mission Street) - The Best For Last
Tex Murphy Overseer
I will also do my best to leave no stone unturned. That means all the conversation paths, hot spots, and deaths in an unmodified game. However on Pandora I plan on being "thorough" on Path C" and being more direct on the other paths in regards to overlapping content. I estimate this will take 48 hours to complete.
In return I'm asking for $36 to get these games from GOG or for the publishers to override the purchase requirement to get these games on my "working system." and to cover my caffeine costs. If anyone in the community can also give me advice on how to set up a livestream that would also help.

Thanks. You can send money to the PayPal account [email protected]. Please specify whether you want the money to be for setup costs or to be added onto the Kickstarter campaign or both. My setup costs will probably include a trial for XSplit Broadcaster and headphones if they don't take away from the live output. If anyone knows of a cheaper way to do this than XSplit please let me know. I'm also looking for people to test my output for a few minutes.
This technique was considered a success for the LSL campaign and it should be fun to see me play through Tex on an empty tank. This was partly inspired by 12 Lucasart Games in 24 hours. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HIWpXnxOgAU

XSplit seems to be everyones preferred program in terms of options and performance. But there are some free alternatives. Mainly for a free option people use Adobe Flash Media Live Encoder (often abbreviated to FME in broadcasting tutorials etc.):
http://www.adobe.com/products/flash-media-encoder.html
Some prefer XSplit others get on well with FME. I think it depends on settings and such. There's a lot of guides, here's one that preferred FME:
http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmes ... _id=218218
And lots of guides specific to each streaming site e.g.:
http://support.twitch.tv/discussion/484 ... ia-encoder
As for a place to broadcast, I like Twitch.tv. It's focused solely on gaming streams and lets you specify which game you're playing which puts you into a public and searchable directory on the site. Also some other broadcasting sites like Livestream limit how many viewers you get to as low as 50 I think. But Twitch doesn't seem to have much limitations. You can also embed the video on other websites, blogs etc.
There's also Ustream but been a long time since I've been there so not sure what the setup is like now.
I probably won't be able to watch as I've been holding off on replaying or watching the games so I can forget a lot from them and replay them myself. But best of luck with it
I reccomend setting up a mic if you can and doing live commentary as you play, just be natural though and have fun with it. Sometimes I've seen people playing a horror game and pretending to be scared and it wasn't as enjoyable as just hearing peoples real reaction, even if it is "Hm was that supposed to be scary?" as everyones different and thats the appeal of watching how different people react to the same game. Some game broadcasters are wild and funny whilst others are laidback and fun to chill with, and they both get viewers so don't feel that you have to be entertaining all the time. Also the mic is useful to chat to people in the chatroom without having to stop playing and type. Otherwise, the live aspect loses some of its appeal and people lose interest. There are sooo many broadcasts with live commentary that I kind of switch channels on Twitch if I don't hear any commentary in all honesty because I can just go to Youtube if I only want to watch a playthrough and type comments. Just being honest to hopefully get you some more viewers
Whatever you do, have fun.

So will this be like a Mario Marathon, or Desert Bus for Hope thing?
If you've not heard of any of those, go look at them.

Pirates, vampires, zombies, ninjas, ghouls, aliens, goblins, monsters, robots, sorcerers, undead, werewolves, demons, mutated dinosaur-cyborgs and those pesky phone salesmen! The shotgun is a one-size-fits-all solution!
Maybe he means as in fundraising method like the gaming for charity broadcasters (I enjoy http://extralives.org/ in this vein). So e.g. a chipin app or other donation method and then forwarding the collected funds to the Tex Murphy campaign. I guess you could also have a direct link to the Kickstarter page too for those who want to donate directly, assuming you're going to do this when its up and running.
For those who don't know, someone did a livestream of them playing Leisure Suit Larry in promotion of the Kickstarter:

If you can maybe have some text constantly on the screen to say what you're fundraising for and where the chipin is etc. I think it works well for the charity streams I've watched.Final Totals For The Last Push Marathon
Game Time: 23 hours 30 min
Money Raised: $1012.37
Paypal has been cleared. 50% went to Replay games 50% Make-A-Wish foundation at wish.org
I want to give you my most heartfelt thanks to the people who came to watch as well as donate, I want to thank Al Lowe, Josh Mandel, Paul Trowe, for their support to the Marathon. I couldn't have done it without you. Again Thank you.... I need a nap. You can still Pre-Order Leisure Suit Larry Reloaded via PayPal!

@Sai
I'm on Adobe Encoder and the only the device it's letting me choose from is XSplit, the one I'd have to pay for. So are you mistaken that I can't use it for free?
I don't plan on involving charities as that would mean less money for Tex however I plan on setting up a PayPal link. Sending me money would encourage me to keep going. Also if I'm not finished in 48 hours I probably will take a break to get some sleep.

You'd use Adobe Flash Media Encoder instead of XSplit, they do the same thing as far as I know. You need to install another freeware software for screen capture for the encoder to pick up on I think. The comparison link above uses SCFH DS which some say gives better performance but is in Japanese, English guide here:

Previous comaprison link which mentions settings etc.:

Whereas others use VhScrCap:

If you find a watermark with VhScrCap you may need to grab an older version according to this thread:

Speaking of fundraising livestreams and Twitch.tv there's one running now for the Gabriel Knight series (non-stop 24 hours) in promotion of Jane Jensen's Kickstarter. It's going well at over $500 so far.
It was linked to and promoted from the Updates of the Kickstarter page. Perhaps the Big Finish guys will be able to do the same for you.

Yeah the GK marathon also inspired me. The biggest concern I have right now is figuring out the technical part. I wouldn't want Big Finish to promote it if it turns out I can't get it running or I'm not able to have a good enough quality flowing stream. If I do this it will probably be a weekend and in the middle or end of the Kickstarter.
On the technical note it sounds like I need VhScrCap. Is a download link for that included in one of the links you gave me?
Edit: I also have two Tex books I could hold up in a pic.
