Rainbow

In the 70s and 80s there was a kids TV program on here in the UK that I watched quite a lot as a young child. It's name was 'Rainbow' and it had a large bear named Bungle, a pink hippo named George and a strange yellow creature with a zippable mouth called 'Zippy' They were looked after by a kind man named Geoffrey and his other human friends.
Anyway, I was browsing Slashdot the other day, as you do, when someone posted a link that has amused and disturbed me.

Now it could just be a coincidence... but does anyone else detect some kind of sordid hidden messages in there somewhere?

Yeah, I saw that a while ago. Really funny stuff.

Is that for real? Not dubbed? That's hilarious!! :D
I've never actually seen an episode of Rainbow but of course I know of it. Who knew it was so sordid

Was the show usually that short? That strikes me as a spot on an adult-oriented variety show, a sort of self-parodying bit. You know, like when Sesame Street characters showed up on Ed Sullivan - except the show this spot would have been on would have to have been strikingly more adult-oriented than Ed Sullivan! Maybe more like SNL, when actors parody their own on-screen characters. There is no way that those double-entendres were unintentional, and less likely that they actually aired for children.
I've read somewhere that TV shows on BBC and ITV in the old days (especially kids shows) would sometimes make short parody/comedy clips for end of year or special event parties. Aparrently this one was done for the Thames TV staff Christmas bash at the end of 1979. It was never meant for public viewing - but now it's out there...

Needless to say this practice doesn't continue, and hasn't since home video came along. Understandable when you consider what other pranks could be smuggled out of a kids TV studio, later to be seen by some unsuspecting child - http://www.tvparty.com/g2d/newzoo01.ram :!:

Yeah it does seem weird. Perhaps you're right, it was done as a spoof. I was thinking maybe a dub but the voices are too exact. I can understand one or two lines accidentally having a double entendre depnding on how you hear it. But when *ever* line is one...

Either way, very funny :D

EDIT: Ah that explains it... Yeah I've seen a few Christmas Tapes stuff before :) Good stuff.
