The Hobbit - Theatrical Trailer

Yess! Made it's debut this morning! A more whimsical, story-driven approach than the teaser from last year - looks like it's really coming together

As much as I'm looking forward to it and as good as it looks, I don't think I'm going to see it until they are both out... True they do a pretty good job cutting off at a good point, but at the same time I hate feeling like I'm out there on a cliff, you know... So I'd rather just wait until both are out so I can watch them together...

I'm like that too, especially with seasonal tv-shows - I usually wait till the end of the season and then throw myself a marathon party. Oh, and by the way, haven't you heard? They're making it into a trilogy now

"An Unexpected Journey", "The Desolation of Smaug", and "There and Back Again" ~ Yikes!

Seems there was enough content in the LoTR appendices to draw the story out to the length of three films, and from my knowledge of the LoTR films, this'll be over 12 hours total of more Middle Earth - Yay!

Trilogy??? Seriously... No I hadn't heard that... Well guess I won't be watching until 2014 huh... That sucks... It's a great story, but to break it into 3 parts, I'm just not sure about that that decision...
My only thoughts from this, after seeing the trailer earlier on MSN, is that they will be looking more into Gandalf's side story with The Necromancer... It's only briefly mentioned in the book, I'm guessing that they are going to expand on this and spread it out more...

Just doing it to rake in more money... They know people are on the edge of their seats waiting for these movies, so they expanded it to 3 movies so they could roll it out slower, rake in the ticket sales and then individual DVD/Bluray sales, just to do it all over again for the next 3 years and then in 2015 release the Collector's Editions and then in 2016 they'll release the Master Box Set of all 6 films... And they'll probably be even more after that...
Of course I'll probably be among the idiots to buy them all... lol

I'm like that with certain TV shows as well... Just DVR them all and then sit back and watch them Commercial Free and all lumped together...

Money definitely has something to do with it. Short as the book is, however, I really think that a lot of the story has potential to be expanded upon - things that most people don't or wouldn't even know about, ie. Gandalf's side-quest and other information buried in the appendices to fill in the blanks, as well as better tie the story to LoTR. I own a few complete collections of 'The History of Middle Earth', and trust me - there is an abundance of information there - twelve volumes to be exact, and believe me when I say there are a lot of other gold-nuggets out there that would likely bore most to tears, ie. 'The Silmarillion'. Additionally, things like the stone giants in the mountain pass always really intrigued me, but didn't get that much mention in the actual book. From the look of the trailer, this could turn out to be a sequence of decent length, at least 10 minutes probably. I can see how the minutes can gather up quite fast if each little detail is brought to life in full theatrical magnificence like this - and knowing Peter Jackson, they probably will. And personally, I'd rather have three films that offer more footage all together and better complete the picture, rather than two films with a bunch of scenes cut out of them, prompting me to watch the extended editions and deleted scenes on the DVD. But, I'm sure there will be lots of those anyway :D

I guess it's a consolation that we don't have to wait a whole year for the last film, scheduled to be released in June of 2014, only 6 months after the second film...

I agree that there's a lot there to be expanded upon. It all depends on how they pull it off. I read The Silmarillion and it is pretty dense: there is a lot there. I keep meaning to sit down and read it again, but never seem to get around to it.
Loved the trailer, I knew I would, thanks for posting it Bjorn.

The Silmarillion, man that's a book I cannot plow my way through, that and the last book and a half of the original Dune series. I'm glad they took their time and expanded out the Hobbit. It's a huge wonderful world, and Jackson is the perfect person to take us on the journey.

I can see them making a trilogy out of The Silmarillion ~ but because there's no real narrative, and it spans a very, very long time, I can see it presented visually in more of a BBC's Planet Earth objective-documentary type style...and narrated by David Attenborough

Just noticed they have five alternate endings to the trailer on www.thehobbit.com for those interested :D

I did not like the Silmarillion at all. To me, there's a reason it didn't get published until after Tolkien's death; he would never have permitted it. It just doesn't match up to the epic story-telling of the others. And, as good as The Hobbit is, it isn't nearly the quality of writing found in TLoTR trilogy. That said, I AM looking forward to watching The Hobbit. My 2 cents. :D
That "Thorin" looks pretty darn tall to be a dwarf. Maybe it was the camera angle but in one shot he looked as tall, maybe taller, than Gandalf. That doesn't seem right. Another trilogy? Whoop! Whoop! And yeah, i tried reading the Silmarillion a couple of times too and just could not make my way through the entire book.

Thanks for the link, but yuk on Quicktime wanting to install, found it non-QT on the CBS news site.

Wonder what Tolkein would think of this Hobbit rewrite with a bunch of new stuff? I think it will be great!
Amen to the "no Quicktime".

hmmm, could be their final intention... To make 9 films altogether... 9 Companions for the Fellowship, 9 Riders, 9 rings for men... Lots of 9s in there...

I don't mind them expanding it, if it gets done properly... Just hadn't heard and wasn't expecting it this close to the release of the first film... Took me by surprise is all... I've been too busy to follow the making and all too closely... I only stumbled upon the Trailer because it was in MSN's little slide show when you log out of Hotmail... Then I figured it had to have been mentioned here, if not I was gonna post it for everyone, so I stopped by and then you told me that it was expanded, so I was taken aback...

I'm quite interested in Gandalf's side story with the Necromancer... Hopefully I'm right on that being one of the things they expand on... Looking at the Cast list on IMDB there is a character listed for the Necromancer... Same person that is doing the voice for Smaug as it turns out... He appears in both the 2nd and 3rd film... But he is Only the Necromancer in the 3rd film, whereas he appears as Necromancer/Voice of Smaug in the 2nd...
I'm really looking forward to the whole Smaug situation as well, can't wait to see how they've done that, as well as Mirkwood Forest and the Spiders... Should all be pretty spectacular... Hoping they do pretty good on the Battle of the Five Armies too...
Using the same magic, if not a bit better magic, as they did with LOTR, we should be in for quite a treat...
Should be really great considering the budget looks like it is going to be 3 times that of LOTR budget... For just the 2 films it is estimated at 500 Million, they don't have a budget or even a script for the 3rd yet... I can't imagine it being any less than 200 Million... LOTR was only 285 Million for the entire Trilogy... The Graphics and Special Effects should all be off the hook...

Yes it looks like we'll be seeing a bit about the Necromancer, as well as other good pieces left blunt in the books...
Here's something that Peter Jackson said:
Peter Jackson wrote: “We know how much of the story of Bilbo Baggins, the Wizard Gandalf, the Dwarves of Erebor, the rise of the Necromancer, and the Battle of Dol Guldur will remain untold if we do not take this chance,” Jackson wrote on the film’s Facebook page. “The richness of the story of The Hobbit, as well as some of the related material in the appendices of The Lord of the Rings, allows us to tell the full story of the adventures of Bilbo Baggins and the part he played in the sometimes dangerous, but at all times exciting, history of Middle-earth.

9 films, eh?

So after they finish the hobbit, I wonder what they'll tackle next?

Gandalf: Lost in New York

Gandalf, after the Return of the King, gets back to trying to restore the order of wizardry and what-not, accidentally runs across an ancient spell that sends him and Pippen into another dimension, and they end up in modern day New York City. Wacky wizardry and cornball hobbit one-liners abound in this feel good romp for the entire family, which includes Tiny Zues Lester as Tyrone, the inner city gang leader who doesn't like the freedom loving ways of the wizard and his wacky side-kick.

Or how about

Sauron Strikes Back

After years of peace between Men and Dwarves, the elvish already gone from the lands, Sauron returns for one more attempt at locking these lands under his iron fist. With the departure of the Elves, Men and Dwarves must forge an alliance to unite once more against Sauron, who has returned, this time spirtually through a virtually unknown female woman, who he'd planted a magical seed in before he was slain the first time as an insurance policy. The woman from the southern "crazy-lands" as I like to call them would raise, train, and prepare the child for the upcoming war, and he'd lead them against the combined forces of Aragorn's Men, and Gimili's dwarves.

Nah, here it is.

Star Trek: Middle Earth

Captain Pichard lands his space ship to explore a beautiful land called Middle-Earth, and while exploring a large cave in Mordor, his team accidentally sucks the essence of Sauron into their tricorders, and his will gets loose aboard the Enterprise. Using the Ship as his new base of operations, he wages war once again against the denizens of Middle Earth, first completely obliterating the elven lands with an orbital strike. It's up to Aragorn, Gandalf, the hobbits and friends, as well as the crew of the next generation enterprise to stop him once and for all.
