Window 8 worth it?

I am thinking about getting the special deal for Window 8 Pro for 39$ instead of 70$ for my desktop. I am curious if it worth it for offline gaming, Steam, MMO gaming, Gog gaming, etc? I am not sure if all latest games on PC market is made for Window 8? I will buy it if it will play all those. Your thoughts?
No idea yet. I bought a copy of the full version win 8 pro for my laptop. If I like it then I'll think about getting it for my desktop. I've been told it's similar to win 7 for non-touch applications. Will report back when I've had a chance to test it out.

Once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny.
It depends on what you already have. If you're getting a brand new computer, go with the latest you can. But if you already have an OK windows, it's less necessary.

I'm still on Windows XP and I haven't been stopped from doing anything I need to yet. My workplace is also still using XP on its older machines. No problem.
This is enough. Before you know it there will be Windows 20.

XP is probably the best version of Windows ever, but the memory cap has become an increasing issue. I finally moved to Windows 7 and it is indeed very good. I had tried Vista back when that was new, but didn't like it.

Windows 8 seems like a mixed bag. I've heard good things about it in terms of performance, but the schizophrenic two-interface thing is really a big turn off for me, and I'm likely to skip it.
I can't believe it's here this quick. My system is still running the 64-bit version of Windows 7 and is doing a fine job of it. I can't see the hurry in upgrading at the moment, especially since it doesn't feel that long ago I upgraded.
Windows 8 seems pretty focused on being "Windows, now for your phone, tablet, or other portable device with touch features!". So I haven't really been paying it much attention (being a dinosaur without any portable touch device that would run it). Looking on Google the first article I found said this:
as much as I liked it in the few minutes I’ve spent with it on and off over the last few months, I’m not sold on it enough to upgrade my Windows 7 laptop to it just yet. If your Windows 7 PC runs well right now and you don’t have the time to learn something new, you can and should wait.
It seems like its good to skip a version of Windows every so often, I went from Win XP to Win 7 (skipping Vista) and now I guess I'll do the same with Win 8. But if you're buying a new PC and need to decide what Windows to put on it, then I guess thats a trickier choice, I'd look up some PC review websites regarding comparisons between the two, maybe watch some Youtube videos of people who have tried both.

I am going from win XP to Win 7 too.

I hate the look of Win 8.

I don't like everything on display on my desktop.

I don't know..... i am probably going to stick with Win 7 since it will do everything I need it to.

8 just seems like it is trying to reinvent the wheel.

I upgraded to Windows 8 on day one (Friday). I couldn't pass on the deal they're offering upgrade.

There is still a standard desktop as there was in previous versions of Windows. The only significant difference from the Windows 7 desktop is the lack of a Start button.

The screen you're familiar with that has "everything" on it, is more like your start menu. The operating system is an important step for Microsoft to compete with Apple in the tablet and smartphone market, while still maintaining a system that can be used on desktops and laptops. It also works with touchscreen monitors if you have one.

So far, I haven't come across any compatibility issues, except with my HP printer which promises to have drivers ready soon. DOS Box runs fine and I've been playing Tomb Raider 1 from GOG in it.
I skipped ME and Vista... I'll probably end up Skipping 8 as well... I've only been working with 7 for the past year and half and still gets steady updates and haven't come across anything whatsoever that looks like I should change anytime soon... So unless they stop upgrading Windows 7 and leave me no choice, I'm most likely just gonna hold out for the next installment...

I used the developers preview for a while & then installed the win 8 pro when I purchased a touch screen desktop recently. I got the release early to test out with a ms subscription.

It works better now than it did previously, I installed a couple of free apps (google search) its brilliant & sky news is great also. you can register your email addresses into one place so if you have a couple of emails addresses it all in one place.

IE10 is super fast.

At the moment you can register to get the free media centre licence, later on you have to pay.
there are pretty good deals on for win pro at the moment, I got mine for $15.00 but I registered earlier when I purchased the touch screen.

mixed feelings for most people are you will either hate it or love it.

Betting pool starting. Takin' all bets!

I'm laying down money now, saying Windows 10 will be named Windows X. Maybe even WindowsX (in one word) or, possibly, even WinX.

I bet they're just marking time until they get to use that.

In fact, someone go buy Winx.com. You'll make a mint.

Did you try the special HP printer option when trying to install your printer? I don't recall how you get to it, but I know of people who got their printers to work using that method when the regular way wouldn't work. If I recall how it's done, or find a post to it, I'll post back.

I'll take that bet. It's highly unlikely MS will opt for that name. It's too close to OSX. Most Microsofties would throw up at the thought
