If the Producers is still on in your area, see it now.
Come on, its Mel Brooks. He has made the greatest movies of all time. He's not getting any younger. So you wont have many more chances to see any of his movies in theaters, though I'm sure some of you are old enough to have seen his earlier movies.
Anyway, if you liked the original, then you will like this one. If you havent seen the original, see it, then see the new one.

I was a big fan of the original Producers. I was expecting to like this one, and went to see it when it first came out. I am sorry to say that I did like like it.
I think it was well acted. Mathew Broderic even did a pretty good Gene Wilder impersonation. Many of the scenes were exactly like the original, and should have been funny. Here's the problem: Good comedy requires timing and pacing. The additional song and dance numbers broke up the pacing sufficiently that scenes that should have been hilarious barely brought a smile.
Most unfortunate was the elimination of all the wooing of the old ladies. Max just rings their doorbells, they all comes out at once and he just walks by a grabs the checks. In the original, the work that he had to do., The dedication. The perserverence of romancing little old lady after little old lady was the highlight of the film. It was completely gone in this one.
So with that, poor pacing, bad timing, and way too long, I couldn't wait for it to be over.
Sorry.
