Top 5 video games
Centipede was the "Bomb" as well Sam, nice catch. I was hooked on that and Tempest. And I lost countless quarters and had nightmares from Dragon's Lair.sam10100 wrote:No Centipede? Crap list indeed. Humph.
edit: 13? I was 13? Crazy. Still had nightmares LOL. Poor Dirk never had a chance with me at the helm.
Donkey Kong Country is your #1 of all time? That game wasn't even great at the time. Is it the heinous artwork or the bland, derivative gameplay that makes it stand out above all others for you?freepizza wrote:My fave five
5. Diablo 2
4. StarCraft BW
3. Zelda: Link to the Past
2. Super Mario Brothers (SNES)
1. Donkey Kong Country
My favorites would be
1. Grim Fandango
2. Chrono Trigger (SNES)
3. UAKM, The Pandora Directive and Overseer
4. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES)
5. Final Fantasy VII & VIII
And what Donkey Kong Country has is excellent music. That alone is enough to give someone great associations with it.

Pirates, vampires, zombies, ninjas, ghouls, aliens, goblins, monsters, robots, sorcerers, undead, werewolves, demons, mutated dinosaur-cyborgs and those pesky phone salesmen! The shotgun is a one-size-fits-all solution!
And to think: now you can carry Dragon's Lair around on your phone...!Jen wrote:Centipede was the "Bomb" as well Sam, nice catch. I was hooked on that and Tempest. I've been struggling to name 5 games. Mainly because it's difficult for me to determine what the definition of a "top" game should be. Is it a game that marked a watershed moment in gaming history or started or revived a particular genre of gaming? Or, is it a game that I really enjoyed playing more than others? Those two may not be completely mutually exclusive, but there are definitely some I would put on one list and not the other.
Here are some of my favorites, in no particular order:
1. Zork (or the whole series, if that's not cheating). I remember playing this game when I was pretty young (elementary school age). I remember the thrill of solving each dastardly puzzle. (Of course this was pre-internet, so you had to slog your way through; no looking on the net for a quick solution.) I also believe that the text adventure genre of games paved teh way for RPGs like Ultima and even adventure games like our beloved Tex.
2. Final Fantasy. I like the whole series, but I remember when the first game came out I was just blown away. It set me forth on a lifetime of loving RPGs.
3. The Pandora Directive. Okay, I love all the Tex games, but this is my favorite. I picked it up on a whim and was massively impressed. This is adventure gaming (and FMV) done right. Full stop.
4. Baldur's Gate. I'll admit that the engine is a bit dated now. But, I think Bioware did a great job with this and their other similar RPGs. I started playing this and was completely immersed in the world.
I can't choose just one, so here are some honorable mentions: The Legend of Zelda, Fallout, Gran Turismo, Super Mario Brothers, Golden Eye, and I'm sure there are others.

And we will beat back to the future....
albeit.... the flying cars in Back to the Future seemed safer.
I picked games that hit home and left a nostalgic feeling years later.
Deus Ex was amazing, but I don't get that warm fuzzy feeling when thinking about it.
Another great game I forgot to add was Bladerunner...
5 just isn't enough to list all my favorites.
