PlayStation 4...

Anyone looking forward to this or do you think it is too soon???

I'm not all that interested in it myself, but the News has been out for a little while now, so I figured I'd see what everyone else's thoughts were on it... The bells and whistles that are new just don't hold much value for me... The controller looks kewl though...

I found the Specs to be a little vague though... I mean it doesn't say anything about it being 3-D Compatible, but that just wouldn't make sense, since the PS3 is and even has 3-D games... It doesn't say how big the Internal Hard Drive is... I guess we'll just have to wait for a bit more information to come out for the Tech side of things...

So, any thoughts on Sony's new love child???

The graphics are incredible is all I have to say.

They are getting so close to realism now, it is scary.

Looked like pretty impressive hardware and preview of launch games but no word on when it will be released or how much it will cost.

I'm thinking for the holidays (Nov 13?) and who knows, around $350 maybe??
I have kind of been ignoring it since it does feel too soon for me. But only because I just don't seem to of gotten many PS3 games, especially compared to PS2 or PS1. I got my PS3 when they were getting rid of the old models with backwards compatibility and reduced their price in favour of making space for the new model, I think that was back in late 2007 - early 2008. In the 4-5 years since then I think I've only gotten a few decent games for it... Others were just release titles I got on the cheap.

Its a great system, it just seems like the game market changed. I like JRPGs and SRPGs for example and it seems a smaller amount of them have been imported over here on the PS3 compared to the earlier Playstation consoles. Still its the only BluRay player I have and there are still games I'm looking forward to (like that awesome Studio Ghibli designed game Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch for example with beautiful 2D animation).

But yeah... I feel kinda meh about the PS4 coming out right now regardless of how shiny the graphics may look.

I'm definitely looking forward to the PS4. Although Live Arcade is better than Sony's Online store, i've always been a much bigger fan of the Playstation. Rechargeable controllers without having a battery pack, first blu-ray based console, decent exclusive titles (Unchartered, Resistance, Heavy Rain) and overall just a satisfying gaming experience. As much as i've tried, I just couldn't grow to love the XBOX in as much as I could admire how it's developed through the years.

So yeah, absolutely praying for a 2013 release but gut instinct tells me not to expect PS4 until 2014. Just saying.
It's definitely not too soon. The 360 came out 8 years ago. The industry has been declining for two years in a row (something that happens at the end of every gen), and it's time for new hardware to revive interest.

That said, it's clear to me that the transition to new hardware is going to be a little slower this time. As long as MS and Sony don't kill off the old systems, I think we're going to continue to see some good games on them for the next couple years, and even a good number of multiplatform releases with the current and next gen.

The hardware details are actually pretty damn specific except for the HDD thing, because there's probably going to be multiple SKUs for that and they haven't decided what sizes they're using yet. I think it's a very good piece of hardware that keeps things focused on gaming and usability. Definitely interested.

No way it comes out at $350, though. $400 or $450. They're probably waiting for MS to drop the bomb before they decide. Rumor is MS is going to have a very cheap ad-subsidized version that might be hard to compete with.
According to what I've read it is due to be released {in the US anyway} in November of 2013... There are suppose to be 2 different models, one around the $450 mark and the other around $530...

Of course the graphics are going to be better, I wouldn't expect a newer model to have the same or lesser graphics... I just don't feel the PS3 has been out all that long to go forcing people, in this economy, to upgrade already, especially at 500 bucks...

I'm with Sai, I just haven't gotten that many PS3 games compared to PS2-1... Mainly because of time and their price... I mean 60 bucks a game isn't exactly cheap and they don't come down in price nearly as quickly as the PS2 games did... There are just better things to spend money on right now...

Frogacuda. why are you talking about when the 360 came out??? We're talking about Sony, not Microsoft...
Yes I know the PlayStation 3 is 6 years old... I think they could have came out with an Upgrade for it instead of a whole new system...

I'm not going to be upgrading anytime soon... Not unless they give me something like a $300 credit on my PS3 as a trade in... I mean the PS3 is the best Blu Ray on the market, still... It is 3-D compatible and works with my 3-D TV... The games and their graphics look just fine to me...
As I said above, the bells and whistles I read about just aren't worth it to me... But to each their own, more power to people aching to get it...

In industry terms, it's probably time. But, it feels very soon to me. I think this is because I have purchased so many fewer titles for the PS3. This isn't due to a lack of enjoyment of the games, but rather because I find myself with less and less time and most of the games I have purchased are massive and (due to time constraints) I find it taking me a long time to finish games.

That said, I'll probably end up picking up a PS4, but I doubt I'll be an early-adopter.

It'll be seven by the time it comes out. That's longer than any previous generation of hardware ever.

No one's taking your PS3 away. The transition to this new gen will probably be slow and not everyone is going to jump on right away, but that's all the more reason that it needs to start soon.

There's really no way to do this that makes sense, and it wouldn't be any cheaper than a new system. I'm not really sure what the point of that would be.
Also, very few systems are "worth it" at launch. This is why 95% of people don't buy systems during the launch window. It takes time to build up a library that justifies the new hardware.
Not that fussed about new graphics anymore, to be honest. What they need to spend more time polishing now is animations. Doesn't matter if the stills are as pretty as any picture, as long as the characters are clipping into each other, moving joltingly across the screen, or causing everything to drop into the uncanny valley every time a character does anything.

I'm also very sick and tired of FPS games who solve violence and damage with a simple clipped 2D animation sprite of blood gushing, or a simple particle effect for concrete and wood taking a hit, as if that's all there is to it. It's time to start work on more realistic damage - both to people and environments.

If we're going for realistic, go whole hog. The graphics themselves are already good enough that it's only about the designer's imagination, now. But animations still leave a lot to be desired.

My two cents.

Pirates, vampires, zombies, ninjas, ghouls, aliens, goblins, monsters, robots, sorcerers, undead, werewolves, demons, mutated dinosaur-cyborgs and those pesky phone salesmen! The shotgun is a one-size-fits-all solution!
I was disappointed by the demo and I think Sony are really kidding themselves with what they showed. Many of its tech demos weren't legitimate and subjected to a lot of speculation that many might have been misleading.

I also think Sony has massively let down the Australian/Oceania market with this new console as firstly its unlikely to be priced fairly in this region and secondly none of the service features will work in our region which makes many of the consoles selling points rather pointless.

The fact that they didn't show the actual unit also leads me to think there's something to hide.. many have noted that this will no doubt be a repeat of what Microsoft did when it rushed the Xbox 360 out to beat the PS3 which resulted in many production faults and many returns.

Much like I did with the last generation of console I'm going to sit this one out for a very long time, I didn't get my PS3 till 3-4 years after it came out so early adopters are frankly getting screwed.

My advice, don't buy the hype. If you can stay on the PC because things are about to get really interesting.. I mean even the initial specs are lower than your average high end PC so that tells you a lot about where the PC is heading.. if you think this looked realistic.. wait till you see what your PC will be outputting in a year or two.

People like to talk out of their ass. That hardware spec reflects a very high priority on making sure that the RROD disaster doesn't happen to them. They're using low-power, low-temperature chips when more popular PC parts would have been cheaper and faster. They're very conscious of these design concerns, and the fact that they aren't rushing to show what the case looks like is probably a good sign that they aren't rushing.

In fairness, raw specs aside, this thing will run circles around PC games during the first year of its life. The amount of extra overhead from the OS that PCs have to deal with ridiculous, and consoles have always been able to do more with less in that regard.
I have to agree with Froguda concerning the running circles.
Consoles always do that in the first couple years.

But after that, the PC will be leaps and bounds ahead.

Sadly, I still don't even have a PS3.

I barely have any time and can't merit spending the money.
Maybe after the PS4 comes out and I can get it at the 150 or 100 dollar mark.

I have been having fun with my PSP and DS.
They allow me to play games on the go, and the wife is always watching the good TV.
I don't want to play them on my crappy TV either.

Although I have been starting to play my PS2 again recently.

Finally started Final Fantasy X.
God I am behind the times.

I couldn't agree more... I think they have over flooded the market with these... Sometimes it is hard to tell one from the other... It's sad that the majority of today's gamers have such short term attention spans that these games have gained such popularity...

I have to agree with Cyberpunk as well, I'll sit on the release of this for awhile... I mean if everything is to be believed, a lot of us will be busy on the PC anyway... If with nothing else, just Fedora alone will undoubtedly be quite time consuming...

I don't see what they would be revealing that is so secretive by letting us see what the thing is going to look like... Seriously, what's the big deal there???

I never said anyone was trying to take my PS3 away from me and they won't... I'll sit on the PS3 like I did the PS2 for awhile... I've never been one to have to have it when it first comes out, regardless of what it is... For a couple of reasons, first is I may not be hurting for money, but I know the price is going to come down, so why spend money I don't have to, secondly absolutely nothing is important enough to have to have the moment it is released, and thirdly I just don't have the time to be that concerned with something I won't really have all that much time for anyway...
My PS3 is probably right around 3 years old... And I bought it more for the Blu Ray and 3-D capabilities more than games... Game wise it was bought more for my Son than myself... I've completed maybe a half a dozen games, that's it, I've played maybe a total of a dozen in all...

I just wanted to get everyone's thoughts on it, I didn't want to start any arguments...
