Unofficial Tex Murphy

I was thinking about Tesla Effect the other day, and after 15 (16?) years of waiting, I was wondering what I was most excited to see when I finally played the new game. For the longest time I'd thought it was the story but I shocked myself when I figured out what it was that I was really waiting for.

Now, you might think I am odd and I may be a minority in this thought, but I found that I was most excited for the game itself. Let me explain. See in the last 15 years I had a long time to piece together where the next chapter in the story was going by the clues that have been given over the years and I think I have a pretty good idea where everything is going in the story. I mean there's no way to know all the little details for certain without actually playing it, but the general theme and whatnot I'd figured out long ago. Don't get me wrong, I'm a sucker for a good story, but because I had all that time to figure the story out, I think I spoiled it for myself. I'd say it was around the time the Radio Theater episodes came out that I had a good chunk figured out. They had a lot of story information. Combine that with the trailers and I'm pretty sure I know where things are going. Don't get me wrong, it's gonna be amazing, but this time around I'm not coming into the game blind. Kind of a bummer, but yet I am still excited.

This is where you might think I am odd. I realized that the game is what I am most looking forward to. Once again walking around this virtual world, seeing how things have changed. Interacting with people. Looking at every bit of garbage, looking under every leaf. Listening to Tex give his awesome voice overs. THE MUSIC. The whole general atmosphere of the Tex-verse is what I am looking forward to the most. It's just one of those things that a movie can't really capture and is unique to gaming. When I realized all this it sort of shocked me. Just walking in Tex's shoes is what I am most looking forward to, experiencing what he experiences. The story itself is kinda secondary this time around. Again, just to clarify, I am confident it's gonna be an awesome story.

This may also seem odd but when I am talking about the story, I am not talking about the scripting of all the characters. Like when Tex interacts with them. I also consider that to be part of the experience of playing the game. I know they are written just as much as the main story itself, but I consider them pieces of the world that you explore. No offense to writers or actors. Believe me they are absolutely integral! The game/world wouldn't be as believable without them. I just mean the underlying story/case that Tex goes on. In terms of character interaction, I am more excited to see what's up with all my old favorites, not to mention the new characters. That will be the most fun for me this time around.

That and the puzzles, I absolutely love the puzzles. I miss that old style of puzzle in games and the Tex team seems to make my favorites. When playing through 3 Cards I had that same feeling I had in Tex games when solving the puzzles, despite being a completely different game and characters. So they definitely have their own style when it comes to them.

So this leaves me with the obvious question, what are you most excited for?

Thinking back over the ages that I played the Tex Murphy games, it never occurred to me to ask, 'why I played'? Now in anticipation of the release of the new game, one asks, 'so why do you play the game'?

The original "Under A Killing Moon" game combined the film noir atmosphere with an easily identifiable, bumbling, sympathetic character with a touch of cynicism. This game (even with all its software glitches and switches) captured me. (I never pictured myself with a fedora or trench-coat, but still the challenges were just right to keep me going forward throughout the games.)

So here comes "Tesla Effect." The challenges for the developers are great (how to keep old souls (soles?) like us at this web-site happy while drawing in new fans?). Like Tex, in the end, Ema Nymton is a trusting soul who's cynicism is really only a shield to protect one's inner most essence, believes life is good. And "Tesla Effect" will carry on the tradition.

Having put all this up, the answer for Ema Nymton is, "Chandler Street walk through with the question of just where is this all going leading?"

Oh happy day. It is, after all, just a game. Isn't it?

The answer to this is so easy for me. I'm going to waltz up and down chandler ave like I own the place, and give grief to the whole gang! Except for Louie. I like Louie. The rest of em will get a bunch of sarcastic Tex one-liner's and I'm going to laugh and point as he burns them all!

number 1 for me is going to be seeing Tex's apartment again, and subsequently seeing the rest of the Ritz again. For me that was always the best parts of UAKM and Pandora because it represented the start of the adventure, and there was just so much junk in Tex's office with a huge back story that was merely just an intro to Tex. I hope they do the same in this game where Tex again has all these awesome backstory nick knacks and popular culture references.

For me it will be the whole experience -

walking through Tex's office, looking at every nook and cranny, making my way through drawers, bins, upholstery, credenzas, filing cabinets, etc

Going to see the old gang (and new) and looking at their familiar (and new) faces, getting thrown out because I'm not giving the correct set of answers or paying the right amount of cash

Snooping around the alleys and trying to get in anywhere that's closed and looking like it might be possible to sneak into, soaking up the atmos, virtually being able to smell and taste Louie's grilled brains

Opening envelopes, making ill fated vid phone calls, checking out the gadgets in the electronics shop, travelling around San Francisco

Blowing across my finger tips before trying to open locks and solving puzzles, finding things one really shouldn't have, Tex's expressions in the little cut sections when he's doing something silly

Looking at the map to see, hey presto, a new location because we did something right and getting in the speeder all excited because we found a clue we need to check out somewhere else

Being insulted by Rook and giving as good as I get

and of course, progressing in the story

The feeling of being back there is going to be beyond excitement. It'll be like coming home after being lost for such a long, long time.

And I'll breathe a sigh of relief and I can imagine my fingers shaking a little over the keyboard before I get going on the journey of our dreams.

Pardon the prose, but it means a lot. Really.

I'll second the whole experience. I can't pick just one thing!

I'll also add the music. The ambient music and the thematic music was always so great! I hope the new Chandler Ave theme is the best yet!

I suppose for me it will have to be all of the comments Tex makes about random objects that you click on. Those always make me smile.

Ditto. I love all of Tex's witty remarks. I plan to click on everything I see.

Definitely, Tex's humor and all that character in his narration is my favorite thing. Very fun stuff.

I'm excited for everything about this game, from that 8 minute trailer #2 this looks to me like it'll be by far the best Tex game. The 3D exploration with modern rendering and controls, and the style and fun of the live-action FMV cutscenes and dialogue is as awesome as ever, probably the most awesome ever.

Very pumped.

I watched the preview on Game Trailers (looks awesome!) and they showed one of the "look at" jokes when Tex looks at a ceramic pot:

I laughed out loud. Looks like the humour is definitely back!

As I am currently replaying Pandora Directive and recently replayed Overseer, what I am most looking forward to is slipping back into the familiar Tex world. Even playing the old games I feel warm and comfortable and quietly thrilled being back in Chandler Avenue and post holocaust San Francisco, so to have a totally new story to explore will be mindblowingly fantastic.

Like many of you, and it does seem kind of odd, I'm looking forward not so much to what's new as to what's familiar. The new scares me, if I'm honest. But from what I've seen so far, those fears are unfounded.

I share the same views and I am waiting for playing the new game. Now I am playing titanfall purchased online from the website.
